Pressure, pressure, pressure. it is a glaring error to assume standard atmospheric pressure for Earth's entire 4. 5 Billion years of existence?
Life on Earth 550 Million years ago: -An Atmosphere filled with floating jellyfish with hydrogen bladders, feeding on floating phytobacteria and phytoplankton- Prove me wrong.
Doubling the atmospheric pressure of Earth would -double the partial pressure of O--, leading to the same changes to chemical reactivity explored in this video.
Question: How many atmospheres of pressure were present on Earth 4. 5 billion years ago, and how has this changed over time?
Remember, Earth's inner and outer orbital neighbors Venus and Mars' atmospheres contain 96% CO-, and no one knows how many tons/atmospheres of Carbon as Carbon Dioxide, Carbonates, Hydrocarbons, etc. have been trapped in the crust or have been subducted into the Mantle. Did you know Venus has 90 times the atmospheric pressure of Earth despite having only 90% of Earth's gravity, while Mars' pressure is 0. 006 atmospheres. So, while pressure varies wildly between Earth's neighbors, without life -atmospheric composition varies not at all-. If you assume no other atmospheric losses (not possible, adding 96% more gas would raise Earth's air pressure to 25 atmospheres.
Examination of animals since the Cambrian Explosion (540 Million years ago) shows they could not have survived/evolved without a more buoyant (dense) and life favorable (partial pressures of Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide) atmosphere. The Engineering shows Pterosaurs could not have flown, Dinosaurs bones would have shattered, huge insects would have suffocated, huge propulsive tails would have been deselected in favor of legs, and huge light gathering eyes would have been unnecessary. It would be dark living beneath such a dense ocean of air, saturated with water, dust/dirt, floating, flying, air swimming, life forms, and photosynthetic organisms would have needed to rise into the light. The fossil record shows huge numbers of Pterosaurs that had to be eating something, and that something was -floating jellyfish with hydrogen bladders-.

We don't need to hypothesize on what would happen with an atmosphere of 40% oxygen in terms of fire, for in 1967, three astronauts were killed in a fire while their Apollo spacecraft was sitting on the launchpad during a test. The spacecraft was pressurized at 16. 7 psi (more than the sea level pressure of 14. 7 psi) at 100% oxygen in order to simulate the conditions of spaceflight. After the fire and investigation, the atmosphere of the spacecraft on the launchpad before liftoff was changed to 80% nitrogen and 20% oxygen at 14. 7 psi while the astronauts breathed 100% oxygen in their space suits; the cabin pressure dropping during liftoff from 14. 7 psi to 5. 0 psi and switching to pure oxygen at the same time (although a scant amount of nitrogen did remain; that would disappear within 24-36 hours into a typical Apollo mission. As for oxygen toxicity, while NASA didn't have such an issue on a 2 week Apollo mission, for the longer-duration Skylab missions in 1973-1974, the composition of the atmosphere, while still at 5. 0 psi, was changed from 100% pure oxygen to an atmosphere opposite to that of Earth's, at 80% oxygen and 20% nitrogen. Since the first Space Shuttle mission in 1981, every NASA (Space Shuttle and Orion) and Commercial Crew Transport (SpaceX Crew Dragon) has used the traditional sea-level -Nitrox- mixture of 80% nitrogen and 20% oxygen, although the Shuttle and Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle has the capability of flying at a reduced pressure of 10. 2 psi with high oxygen content (reducing the need for -pre-breathing- pure oxygen for spacewalks in the Extravehicular Mobility Unit space suit, which still uses 100% pure oxygen at 4. 2 psi.

What about if the Earth's oxygen was cut in half? Or even reduced 25%? I was watching videos on Biodome 2, and their oxygen got as low as 14. 5% which is about 5% lower then the air we breathe! They did suffer some terrible side effects, but I don't think it would be a planet extinction event. Just curious how we would adapt, how it would effect us (I think we might actually age slower, how difficult it would be to start fires, do any kind of aerobic activity, etc. Can't find much on the subject, would make an interesting video!

well this video is saying that humans would have health problems from too much oxygen. that is under the assumption that we take people from the past thousands of years and give them more oxygen in their environment. but if people slowly had the atmosphere increase with oxygen over time then when it hits 30%ish they would be born being adapted to it if evolution works for us homo sapien sapien.
so the big question still remains what would humanity look like if we were adapted to 30% more oxgyen in the atmostphere

After breathing few hours the lungs will start shutting down a lot of alveols because the body does not ned such a large surface to make sure the body will have sufficient amount of oxygen. That will trigger the lungs to develop a glassy surface on a lot of alveolis and you will develop a chemical pneumonia. It will start when you have passed 1425 Units of Pulmonary Toxic Doses.

2: 00 With a higher oxygen level, you'd notice no difference at all. Because your body would've adapted to that higher oxygen level, so you would not be in any way more able to outrun giant insects than you are today. Because evolution is just a reaction to the environment, not deliberately intentional with some specific end goal in mind.

Double oxygen means more redox activities. Unfortunately, we are now with 300% CO2 saturations, approximately. 36 increase per litre. Immunity is becoming challenged. Famine is prevalent and food chains occupied by specialist. We could expect the same with double oxygen, roughly. 42 per litre saturations.

Humans would not be able to perform physical activity better, as we don-t even use up the oxygen in our current air. We only use about a quarter of the oxygen in air with each breath and this can be measured very easily: Air is 21 % oxygen, exhaled air (breath) is 16 % oxygen.

I stopped watching this video when you showed the picture of the dinosaurs when you were talking about the time when there was more oxygen. Dinosaurs lived long after that time. Just shows you don-t know what you-re talking about.

If this happened overnight, yes this would all be true. IF this was how things were since prehistoric times and oxygen was still at 30% then none of these side effects would take place simply due to. say it with me, EVOLUTION.

Surely with that much oxygen we would all burn when someone struck a match. Want a better what if? What if hydrogen bonding between water molecules stopped occurring? Do the research. here's a hint: none of us would be here at all

Oxygen isn't vital to all life on earth, this is wrong. Plants, who are alive BTW, need carbon dioxyde to survive CO2, where they keep the carbon atom and reject the O2 element that we breathe. So plants have no need for oxygen.

Only plants make free oxygen, and the extra plants would need a lot more CO2 to do that. I am not at all sure that insects breathing systems would benefit much from more oxygen as the property of the gas is still the same.

Manufacturers better start making larger fly swatters and extra strength RAID.
This will never happen though. More and likely there will be more C02 and methane in the future.

Well that amount of oxygen in the atmosphere would result in massive fires globally from lightning strikes etc, the ignition point for fires would skyrocket worldwide.

Human's couldn't exist, if the oxygen level was higher than it presently is. The vast majority of what we breath, isn't oxygen. Breathing twice as much would kill us.

Athletes train with oxygen mask but not to get more oxygen but less. This forces the body to be more efficient in its oxygen use and increase your endurance.

BS! Insects breath through spiracles, not trachea. If oxygen went up to 40% most life would go extinct. You did ZERO research on this, didn't you?

Oxygen doesn't give you energy, at least not directly.
Oxygen allows us better access to the energy in our food.
