What if the US Never Annexed Hawaii?

In the early days of commercial air travel the key to not just riches glory for an airline in the US, but it's mere existence, was carrying the mail. The compensation for carrying mail would enable a route to be profitable nearly regardless of the number of passengers, and the Postmaster General at the time set up a system where airlines would bid for every route. Then someone in Congress got wind of this, decided to make the airlines the bad guys for playing by the rules that the Postmaster General had set up, and decreed that the Army would henceforth fly ALL the mail. Predictable disaster as the Army was not set up to handle it. A few months later Congress reconsidered and changed it's tune. Henceforth EVERY commercial flight would carry the mail.
Into this battle came Trippe, the son of a wealthy New York stock broker and twice-failed airline owner. He decided to star a company focused on carrying mail and passengers to places outside the US. With a Fokker Trimotor he set up the business flying between Key West and Havana. He later figured out that flying boats were the way to go and started a close business relationship with Igor Sikorski, more known nowadays for helicopters.
Trippe's company, Pan-American Airways, soon extended it's service all the way to Santiago, Chile and Rio De Janeiro. But Trippe had eyes on the big prize, flying regular service across the oceans. The route west was blocked by Britain, who demanded compensation that Congress was not ready to give, so he looked west. Ultimately he wanted to fly to Hing Kong and Shanghai, but he set his initial western terminus as Manila. Obvious stopover points between San Francisco and Manila were Honolulu and Guam, but there was huge gap between then that no flying boat could cover. He looked for and found a small atoll that would suit the bill. Wake Island. But there was absolutely nothing there except sand, palm trees, coral, and gooney birds. So he built a facility himself. In 1935 service began from San Francisco to Manila with stops at Honolulu, Wake, and Guam.
Now then. Think on what the Japanese hit on that day in early December of 1941. Specifically, WHERE they hit. Not just Pearl Harbor, but also Manila, Guam, and Wake. Basically, they attacked Trippe's airline, putting it's facilities out of use. You bastards. you didn't just attack America, you attacked Pan Am!
What would Trippe do in your scenario, with the Philippines and possibly Guam in Japanese hands and Hawaii ostensibly British? My initial thought would be that he would deal with Japan. Chichijima, an island a little more than half way to Okinawa from Wake, has a bay at the north end which would be great for flying boat operations, and a town there named Ogasawara. From there flights could continue easily to Tokyo. The Japanese would be quite happy to increase trade with a neutral, non aggressive United States.

Even with the UK busy elsewhere Japan might struggle to take Hawaii because of the logistics of the situation. But I suppose its possible if Hawaii is very weakly defended and if the Japanese, having started the war with the Philippines have more resources, don't have the logistical demands of a campaign against the Philippines and maybe have built more naval auxiliaries and transports to move and support the invasion fleet.

How exactly with the Japanese be able to conquer Hawaii they couldn't afford to feed most of their other conquests and Hawaii wildly unable to feed itself in that era has way more mouths than farmland capacity Hawaii literally imports every needed material as well making Japan's conquest of the islands laughable
