I personally think Californians accent, the West Coast accent feels very prominent due to Hollywood and LA being such a media hub. Ive met many people form across the world and they have all shared that in California they felt they could understand english better than in places like Boston or most of Texas.
Share your comments below what American accent state or region you feel would be the best to learn for a foreigner in America?

I noticed this when I started teaching English and the kids were like did you say s--d--udent? Pin or pen? Romantic or r-uh-mantic? Dude it d-you-d?
And I was like huh?
One of my student had trouble with the -ou- sound
And I had a hard time trying to break it down in to two vowels
Because usually I just say -ou- lol
Pronunciation could be so confusing -
(We fixed the problem btw)

I think Erik is a genious. I also think that, in general, English has a lot of regional accents, probably only Spanish has more. Most other languages are geographically located in a single spot. To have a wide range of accent is a pretty particular feature of a language.

Its so amazing the way he-s able to break down these accents with this map! Over the years, I-ve noticed many of these similarities in accents but never had the words to explain it. Guess I need to go to a dialect coaching school.

Could we get a video where you speak on reduction of endings of words? for instance, my friend and i both grew up in the south, but she pronounces a certain gun name as wingMAN and i pronounce it reduced. as wingmun
reply

There are SO many different types of southern accents. I sound nothing like the southern example in this video. HOWEVER, I appreciate the science behind different pronunciations and really enjoyed learning.

1. Where was Erik Singer while I was studying Linguistics at Uni?
2. What-s his tatt?
3. Why isn-t he wearing his wedding ring anymore?
4. Oh and yeah, good info well presented!

The reason he's on so many of these videos is cause Linguists struggle to find jobs and this is at least something to do other than awkwardly staring at random people talking in public.

Every time i watch one of these I'd love for him to tell me about my accent.
I've been told that I have a -weird accent-
But also that i -don't have an accent-

Unpopular opinion: I want the pandemic to continue so that I can spend all my time indoors and watch this dude talk about accents.
