I have been so relieved since I learned that my short sleeping is genetically based. Became aware of sleeping less in adolescence. I've always slept shorter than anyone I know. I believe that my dad was a 6 hour a night guy. Also, my mom was very sleep disordered and it runs in her side of the family for the females especially to be sleep disordered in terms of weird sleep habits.
I've gone through most of my adult life with between 3 to 5 hours sleep per night. Hard for me to sleep past 3 hours unless I'm really exhausted. But I do try and get 5 hours, because I have been worried that less was going to kill me. Now I know, if I sleep four and a half hours or whatever then just go with the flow. I have an incredible memory which both my parents had, but my dad had a photographic memory, which I inherited. I'm a natural optimist, which pulls me out of the myriad reasons I have for depression and anxiety. I'm known for my excellent memory among my friends. Have exceptional autobiographical memory.
Life has been rough so at least I got some kind of genetic lottery! Now I can really appreciate it. Now I know it's not going to kill me and that I'm not a complete freak! It is truly such a relief to know that I'm a natural short sleeper and that it's a thing! Hats off to the researchers who have found the genetic mutation which causes this unusual pattern! And hallelujah that I'm one of the lucky ones in this regard!

Whats her name again I firmly believe my husband has this he-s tried different medications and they either gave him nightmares, chills, or hallucinations! He sleeps 1-4 hrs and 4 being the best and he-s up all the time! It-s been this way he said since as far as he can remember since he were around 5 to 6 years old-. He has refused to go back to a Dr since he were a kid due to the effects! HELP!

I curious about this since I been working night shift for the first time ever. I get out at 7am I run, shower an eat. I only been sleeping 4 ish hours a day 7am to 12am. The rest of day an night I-m awake. Yes I struggle but not like when I had to wake up at 7am an got 8 to 9 hrs of sleep a night. I felt even more tired working a day job.

Dont be dumb. it has nothing to do with genetics. People only sleep for 4-6 hours in my country and they all die at the age of 80 and above. people in western countries sleep too much. that why people are so depressed, lazy, and obese. Try it your self don't just believe what scientists tell you about your body. Test it your self-

Oh wow. I think this is me. I tend to have more energy with 4 to 6 hours of sleep than when I sleep for more than 8 hours.
I sometimes do take long naps and that causes me to stay up late. But i sleep the moment i feel it. I don't fight it. Like if I'm reading my book or watching a show and i feel sleepy. I fall asleep.

My whole life I've been struggling to force myself to sleep because you always hear you need 6 to 8 hours, then after 2 hours of trying give up because im wide awake. I feel 100% with 4 to 5 hours of sleep and it's nice to know this information. Since I was a kid I layed in bed for hours cause I -should- be sleeping.

I'm a natural short sleeper. I sleep under 6 hours, I can't get anymore than that, but sometimes I get a break, I get 8 or 9 hours one night, but it's very rare. It's been this way since I was a kid. My doctors thought they needed to medicate me, but that made me feel like total garbage all day so I stopped.

My circumstance is odd, i function best on 4-5 hours of sleep however if i lay down on a weekend with no time to wake up i can sleep for 9-10 hours and feel good, however where it gets wierd is between 5-9 hours i feel groggy despite 7-8 hours being the most common sleep hours needed
