I have been in the computer industry over 40 years. Now with that said I often get the question why are computers so expensive. This is what I tell them. My first computer was a Intel 286 computer running at 25 Mhz. The cost of the computer and the EGA monitor was 2, 300 which did not include a hard drive. I purchased a 20 meg hard drive that cost me 250. So the total cost no including Windows was very high. The computer that I am on right now is a Ryzen processor running at 3. 6 GHz, SSD M. 2 that is 1T and 16 Gig of memory. The total cost of that computer is about 550. So I paid less for a computer that has light years faster then my first computer. My iPhone that I hold in my hand is 1000x faster then my first computer. My first Mac 512 computer was over 3000. Now OS yes at one time Mac OS had an advantage in graphic such as cad, photo, video editing, and anything that deal with images. Mac OS was better over Windows for a long time, but currently you can do both of those processes on both Mac OS and Windows OS. I do video editing on both Windows and Mac. Now as far as Linux for the average user I would not recommend it. The library is not very good as far as software. Many times you have to do adjustments that are way above the average users understanding. For advance users it is fine, and also for servers it is a stable platform that works will in that environment. There have been many advancements in the GUI interface of Linux, but often you need to use the command line which most users do not have a good enough understanding to how to use it. Now the issue of AI. The difference between AI and Humans is the ability to look outside the box to create new ideas. AI depends on what we already know. You might be able to use AI to lets said I want to create a graphics editor in GUI and give some requirements as to how you want it to look. Now AI can take current information of the programming language and the requirements and build the program. What about something that has never been done where there is not information for AI to use now that is where AI will fall short. I build a Statical Process Control program that was based on Edward Deming. I am a Engineer but the people in Data System said that it was impossible to make such a program using GUI. The programs that were on the market cost over 2000 and ran in DOS. I wrote the program on a Mac and it was so easy to use no instruction were needed other then the training on how to understand the date. I did what the experts said I could not do.

Because you teach computer science it doesn't make you a computer scientist. It makes you a computer science professor lol. Computer Scientist is a made up term. If it actually existed it could literally mean anything. it can mean software engineer/developer, network engineer, cybersecurity analyst, security engineer, devsec engineer, site reliability engineer, algorithm engineer, big data engineer, systems/cloud engineer, digital forensic analyst. should i continue? Is this man all of those things? Fix your title Wired!

I would have explained at binary simple instruction and arguments of computer code. because ultimately that is what the 0s and 1s are. Instructions and data that the instructions operate on and there are specific lengths at which an instruction is interpreted and the instruction defines how many further digits the code needs to consume to form its arguments and then instruction again and its arguments. etcetcetc good luck covering any of this in a tweet lol, which is why twitter is useless.

I love how we have experts in many areas in things like computers: dfferent elements of software, various experts on various elements of manufacture, materials, assembly, function, etc. But we probably don't have many experts in ALL of it. And if we lose any one link in that chain, the whole thing becomes and enigma.

His passion for computers is so clearly visible in his sweat that he has while explaining things look at the cs5o course, prof Malan is always sweating and it really does show his enthusiasm and passion for computers and teaching he is probably the best teacher to exist right now.

About ternary. it all depends on how good your equipment is. DNA uses 4 letters. It works fairly well but there is a reason it uses base pairs to improve its accuracy. But fair to say the body spends all its time fixing corrupted DNA using the base pairs

why seacrh engine works so fast? the answer is the servers are computing websites 24/7 and making index pages according to words. So when you write the query it match the words with indexed words table and bring relevant pages according to your query.

The idea of working along side these innovations, as tools in our belt, as opposed to replacing us, is the best way I ve found to cope with rapid technological change. This sentiment needs to be uttered more!

Met him when I took AP Comp Sci way back when. He visited our high school because we were one of the first public high schools to adopt the CS50 curriculum. Had him sign my phone case lmfao. Great guy

As a computer science student I found this to be a very interesting and EXTREMELY well spoken interview that did a great job of answering these questions, no wonder he's a Harvard professor lol

I got my first computer in 1979 and he did a great job explaining things. One of the first things I learned in early CS classes was binary and hexidecimal, I can still count by 16s

Perhaps the best professor I've ever heard explaining a concept in ways that are so simple, yet so complete. I'm interested to hear any of his lectures that are available online.

What a pleasant surprise to see Prof. Malan on here! I watched parts of his CS50 course a while back and loved his way of teaching and explaining things.

As a software developer, I didn't learn much, but I can appreciate how he managed to simplify very complex ideas. Great explanations overall.
