The Mormon and Jehovah's Witnesses did start out as cults, as stated in this video. Unfortunately, what the gentleman failed to mention is that both the Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses continue to be cults to this day. That is why they are NOT considered a christian denomination. They are actually still cults. They also excommunicate or shun members who leave or speak against their teachings and leaders. They fit the criteria of a cult.
Additionally, I believe that Trumpism can be a cult in certain groups of that ideology. Because, it wasn't until Trumpism that a fellow republican couldn't disagree on some things with the leader of the party and all of a sudden start being called a RINO. Basically saying that if you don't agree with everything leader says, you're out. And alot of Trump supporters just go right along with whatever Trump says. No distention is allowed. That is exactly what cults do. I just think too many people are afraid of calling a spade a spade. When it comes to politics and religion, people just don't want to offend. But at what price

The Watchtower Society (aka Jehovah's Witnesses) is still a cult. They mandate shunning members who break the rules (even if its your own family, take whatever the governing body says as absolute truth, martyr their children by letting them bleed out instead of allowing them blood transfusions, own a compound that is constantly advertised to younger members so they can pack their things and move to some middle of nowhere part of NY and do unpaid labor, encourage members to basically monitor each other and report any wrong doings to leadership, constantly rave about the apocalypse being close and having that as it's central teaching, etc.

Wish he mentioned how the quirky aspects of some cults, like weird clothing or strange rituals, are an intentional tactic. For one, it acts as a barrier that will turn away most people, so that the ones who turn up will be those most malleable. Secondly, wearing distinctive clothing or acting unusually in public will cause outsiders to avoid and ostracize the cult members, making it more difficult for them to leave. Not every cult does this, but many do.

Considering cult deprogramming itself is not a legitimate and regulated practice and therefore subject to personal bias and narratives, one might need to take this one with a grain of salt.
Other wired interviews feature experts in established fields of study, so it's a shame this snuck into the series without a bit more fact checking and less bias. Some things said are factual events and others are subjective conclusions.

I would say part of the reason they seem so prevalent in the US is that you're quite an optimistic bunch by nature, so you are far more willing to give someone a hearing if they preach a positive message. Here in the UK the minute someone says things can be better we automatically think No, they can't. and are put on our guard right away. The downside to that being things never do get any better in Britain accordingly.

Much of the western world has been living with and promoting a huge cult for 2000 years, building massive temples for its worshipers, erecting statues of its founders, fighting wars to spread its power and increase its wealth. Same thing happened in the Middle East, the Far East. It's called religion. Not much difference between it and the wackos that are waiting for space ships.

I am an avid reader on cults and several of this guy's views are questionable, although it's great he's warning people. For example, whether there actually needs to be a singular leader like he says, or whether that can be more decentralised (like in the cult of Alcoholics Anonymous. He talks about benign cults, but outsourcing your free will to any group is dangerous, not benign.

I escaped a cult and you know what it was called Catholicism. I'm sorry but all religions are cults now and I have been awakened.
There is no going back to sheep. I've seen to much to not know there is no difference. And yes the religious people will excommunicate you if they don't think you part of their religion anymore. Oh by the way a cult plus time equals a religion.

I know he's the expert, but by his own definition of a destructive cult, I do believe Trumpists are in a cult.
1. Absolute totalitarian leader that becomes an object of worship check
2. Said leader uses coercive persuasion to gain undue influence super check
3. Once the leader has said undue influence, use it to exploit and harm followers triple combo check

That's pretty hilarious he refuses to see trumpism as a cult
His followers literally think he was chosen by god himself to save poor white and rich white people
Many have blatantly said on camera they refuse to believe anything anyone says unless trumpf himself says it
ITS ABSOLUTELY A CULT.
PEOPLE HAVE DIED BECAUSE OF TRUMPISM
Major fail bro

Here in Portland, OR - our local Antifa and anarchist groups use many of these control and grooming techniques to attract idealistic and desperate/damaged people with coded language, in/out dynamics, and promises of mutual aid’. An academic who wanted to make a name for themselves could make a hot career investigating and writing on these groups.

I think the biggest misconception of Cults is that they have to be religious: Not all cults are religions and not all religions are cults and I hope these sorts of videos help drum it in to people because that misconception has been harmful in terms of people realising they're in a cult. They'll claim they're not because itsn ot a religious organisation.

Kind off surpriced he didn't mention The Anthill Kids. That cult is one of the most F'ed up cults that I have ever heard about. Although not as deadly as Heaven's Gate, they have done things that will make your spine shiver. It makes you second guess why you ever read or saw a documentary about them (I recommend Count Dankula's video on the cult)

Sorry. The republican party is a cult for sure. They check every box; splitting hairs over whether trump was booed at a rally once doesn't counter the fact that he can openly lie and commit crimes and his followers just dont care, or they chalk it up to political persecution. Ever spoken to a trumpist It is EXACTLY like talking to a scientologist.

I have a family cult. Thankyou for saying yes, it’s crazy hard to find help when what happens is so consuming. A lot of advice is for a relationship that’s not been life consuming since birth. There’s a huge lack of humanity that needs to grow before typical things like narcissist advice can assist. Just no muscles for life really

See Don the CON and his supporters for more. ..
Then throw in tens of millions of dullards in these United States and the statistic that fully 1 in 5 Americans only reads at a 6th grade level.
Then look at all of the propaganda and cult techniques used by Don the CON to turn America itself into a cult.

I remember in 2020 I reached out to a bunch of sociologists and cult experts to ask for an interview on if QAnon was a cult. All but one (Steven Hassan, who was not available for an interview) said that QAnon was not a cult and to pick something else.
And a few months later on January 6 2021 they all ate their words.

My wife left the Mormon cult and her life is now better than ever. She is now happier, closer to God and more successful and all without the toxicity and guilt she had previously lived with. Any religion that promotes threats through fear for those who disbelieve, or leave are in-fact cults.

While the Branch Davidians definitely counts as a cult, his description of the fire at the end is debatable. Yes, it ended in a fire, so he's technically walking the line. However, lots of mistakes were made by both sides and the blame does not lie solely on Koresh and his followers.

Just starting to watch the first question and can’t help think about the warning signs also match coercive controls in relationships as you point out by your third query 2: 43. Altho’ incomplete: severe coercion by alternating love bombing, gaslighting, and violence.
