Say whatever you must about Illidan.
Call him an edge lord, a radical crack head, a monster of his own doing, and a slave to his ambitions you may. Make fun of his thousand flaws, his mistakes, failures and his unpardonable crimes you may. But never, ever doubt his willingness to do everything, even committing the wrong and the greatest evils, to save his home planet from what he has deemed as a certain destruction. Never question his heart.
At first, it was just him following his grand inflated ego, his own justification for power and self satisfaction, and what he perceived as -his promised destiny. -
Then, he was proven wrong, was defeated more than one, and was humiliated and imprisoned by his people, scorned by his brother and even the object of his love. At one point, he was at the very lowest point that any Hero of the world has ever been subjected to. His pride was completely broken, his name tarnished, and he was but an edgy shadow of what he should have become. He has failed, times and times, yet again. His path might have been one hell of a crooked dark grey path, with more aggressive shade of vile darkness than beautiful holier-than-thou white. But Illidan stayed true to his cause to the very end of his path and redeemed his name with his ultimate success. But even without that, without that one great success, Illidan has already proven himself, as a character and a man, to have more heart than any other Heroes in the world of Warcraft, more than Sylvanas, or Arthas, or Varian, or Jaina, or Tyrande, or Thrall, or even his own brother Malfurion.
Unlike any other Heroes, Illidan, even at his lowest points, had not betrayed, or given up the goal he set out to do once. Strayed, yes, but never betrayal or surrender. They all did, at one point, but not him, not Illidan. And this heart is what make Illidan more endearing, inspiring, and precious than any other Heroes that were ever written in the lore of WOW.
Illidan might not be the most beautifully crafted, well written character among the Heroes of WOW. He is extremely flawed, but he is the most inspiring, and most memorable one among a great cast of hundreds. But Illidan embodied the word 'Hero' like no Hero had ever done. So thanks, Athelarius, for doing justice to the greatest of hero of Azeroth.

I always feel sorry for KJ when i see his expression at his end, man just could not believe in Velen and the light enough to crush a god and his legion. and after all these years he is shown velens vision to still be true. Still he was so damn mad he turned the guys son against him just to be fodder, that gotta hurt em both.
In my mind this was not just a redemption story for illidan but for multiple characters, in their own way.

is the story in chronological order? I'm confused b/c of two things:
1. Guldan in the earlier parts sees Illidan trapped by Maiev, in some WoW Legion cinematic
2. Illidan consumes Guldan's skull (assuming Guldan died, in one of the Warcraft III cinematics

The light trying to force -their- own misguiding prophecy onto Illidan wasn't any better than what the Legion was trying to do. Fel, Light and the Void all have their own agenda and neither of them are right in how they want to shape the universe. I guess we will see how it turns out in the end.

My question is. did players during TBC era know that Illidan was a -good- guy? Because up until Legion my understanding had always been that he was a bad guy and that's why he was a raid boss at the end of TBC.

i believe they ended his story almost perfectly. I know it was weird in some places, but they really played the role well of him not giving AF ABOUT ANYONE AT ALL -besides- azeroth. (and tyrande -)

That final cinematic around 1: 07 feels like it's the fitting end of the Warcraft story. I'm still interested to see where they go from here, but at least that main arc feels wrapped up.
