I know this video is all about Rome BUT I would love to see the story of Alcibiades of Greece. From the very beginning of his life, he was an exceptional man. When his talents and loyalty were given to Athens (his home city) they were winning the Peloponesian War. He was the perfect image of an Athenian hero and a student and close friend of Socrates. When forced to flee to Sparta, he proved himself to be more Spartan than the Spartans themselves and turned the tide of that war in Sparta's favor, that is until he seduced the wife of the Spartan King. Then fleeing to Persia, he transformed himself (you guessed it) into the most magnificent Persian in that mighty Empire. The Athenians begged him to return back to Athens where he again turned the tide of war in their favor. Exiled again from an ungrateful Athens, he retired from the conflict but still attempted to give his advice to the city he loved. The stubborn naval commanders of the Athenian fleet refused his advice and as a result lost almost their entire once proud fleet. This was, as much as anything, including the plague which swept through Athens, it's death knell. The war, which had gone on for so many years was over in just one more year resulting in Athen's total defeat. This great warrior and strategist met his ironic end when he again had an affair with a local King's wife in his next exile from Greece and was struck down with arrows as he left her chambers. Ironic because his handsome appearance meant that women were always chasing him, and he had an insatiable eye for them too, despite even obvious dangers that might be present. Alcibiades had the ability, confidence and charisma that was attractive to many people. Unfortunately, his touch of arrogance and frivolity also produced many enemies for various reasons. NOW. Does this sound like a good movie possibility? Brad Pitt, where are you?

Gladiator is nr 1. Spartacus nr. 2 and Centurion nr. 3. The other 2 movies Julius Caesar and Ben Hur i don't want to give them numbers because i never liked the movies. I love military history so when i see such movies i start checking the clothing and the way they operated. Gladiator is way up there and i can't wait for a sequel. Spartacus was for his time a well made classic movie about Roman times. The formations of the legions was so cool done that i could say that they did there home work. Centurion as a modern movie is not my favorite but from these five it is a good third. I have always said to make a movie about this period you have to consider making a sequel because so many things happen that you cannot leave out of the movie. That was the mistake that Oliver Stone did with Alexander. I think he should have made it a trilogy since Alexander had a lot of battles that started at the age of 16 when he fought with his father side by side. I never liked the movie Alexander because many battles where left out but should have been in the movie because it made him what he was during his life. It stills bothers me that it's been years i have seen that movie. Another film that was rumored to be in pre-production was Hannibal. A project of Vin Diesel where he would play Hannibal. Only with Hannibal is the same story as Alexander it cannot be done in one movie. It has to be at least a trilogy to make sure his story is told in the right way.

Hey-why isn't Quo Vadis listed her. It is free on You Tube and is a really fine 1950 film. Lots of pageantry & Peter Ustinov as Nero singing while Rome burns. Robert Taylor and Deborah Kerr.
Howard Fast (one of the Hollywood Ten) wrote the book, Sparticus, and it is worth reading. My Latin teacher took our whole class to see Julius Caesar, 1953.

Centurion 2010 is so wrong. Roman's didn't use spears it's outdated and only the auxiliary uses it and the third line which was Triari the veterans of long battles. After that only during the much later period did they came back to using spears.
A Roman legionary wouldn't even be having a spear at all but only pilums

I think that you-d be better off with a top 10 list. Any top 5 list will leave off some greats! My top 5 would be:
1. Cleopatra
2. Ben Hur
3. Masada
4. The Eagle
5. Le destin du rome (An enacted documentary with university professors interviewed and some tacky CGI, but the actors speak Latin and Greek)

reply

Seriously? Gladiator is not even a good historical representation of the end Marcus Aurelus-s reign and Commodos-. There are so many things wrong with it that it-s nothing more than an Schwartznegger action film in togas. The other 4 I agree with. I would replace Gladiator with the Eagle.

There's the good one 'The Fall of the Roman Empire' (1964. It was also apparently the last of the epic Roman movies, until 'Gladiator' (2000. If one watches that 1st one, and then immediately, or soon, afterward that 2nd one, it's like the 2nd one is almost a sequel to the 1st one.

Some great movie picks about Ancient Rome here. Gladiator is a classic for good reason. Really transports you to that period. Interesting to see the different perspectives films have taken on this era of history. Always love learning more about this fascinating time.

Why Hollywood never show a program or a movie on the largest Empire in the world which was the Persian? instead of only showing Roman and Egyptian? Because Hollywood is racist, biased and controlled by the enemies of the largest human culture on this planet.
reply

There is NO WAY that Gladiator is number 1. Ben Hur is a master piece as is The Robe. Spartacus too! The movies made in the golden years of Hollywood with superior actors and speaking voices, diction on all levels leaves the modern stuff for dead.
reply

Interesting you have 'Julius Caesar- in there - outstanding, with a great cast. And Louis Calhern is superb as Caesar, but.
1) Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire
2) Quo Vadis
3) Spartacus
4) Ben Hur
5) The Robe.

The old non-CGI films are the best, real people, real decorations. I would love to see it if they did this again.
Another great movie is Daens (it's bot about the Romans, but it's also about history, and based on true things.

In the end, which of the 3 top movies is the best. comes down to an individual's likes and dislikes. Perhaps it would be better to extend the list to ten to include ''The Fall of the Roman Empire', 'Quo Vadis', 'Cleopatra'.
reply

When I saw Ben Hur and Spartacus make the list, I thought for sure Quo Vadis would make the cut. I would have placed it above the 1953 Julius Caesar. But, it-s a good list and they-re all great movies!
reply

Spartacus with Kirk Douglas was released in 1960 not 1950.
Quo Vadis also from MGM was an epic spectacle film in Technicolor released in 1951 after years of planning and filmed in Italy.

reply

I was surprised -The Eagle- wasn't on this list. I actually really like it. It's stunning visually, and a great story about friendship based on a novel.
reply

My list
1. Ben Hur
2. The Fall ot the Roman Empire
3. Spartacus
4. Quo Vadis
5. Gladiator
Honorable Mentions: Julie Caesar

reply

well I do have do disagree with Centurion. it was only cool the first 15 minutes. after that it was just some people running on mountains
reply

I haven't seen Centurion, and was unfamiliar with it. I've seen the other four. That includes a colorized version of Julius Caesar. Quite good.
reply

With all necessary respect, you must be mistaken. Spartacus was released in 1960 and not 1950 as -3: 29. Just saying and not hating ok.
reply

My favorite of all - Ben Hur! Then Gladiator and toss up following! Do you have it to watch for free? How to download it?
reply

can they make a roman centurion or gladiator movie where the characters spoke latin instead of an old english accent?
reply

Any movie about that time with no violence? Oh wait, we need to believe that they didn't do anything else.
reply

The old movies were good for their time but come on no one will watch them these days they-re to put dated
reply

All average, no great films at all no of them apart from Gladiator!
