I 'personally' think that cause Thanos's army is called -The Black Order- so that may mean that Thanos's blade must be made up of Dark Energy which means somethin made up of Dark Matter and Dark Energy absorbs Light Energy means somethin made up of Light Matter so that could be the reason why it was able to break the Vibranium Shield and also because of that, it was why Wanda was able to break Thanos's sword cause her powers are also made up of Dark Energy. This is just an opinion.

Vibranium is the strongest metal on Earth, It's never stated that it's the strongest metal in existence. Thanos has invaded many planets and has likely encountered several planets with metals stronger then vibranium. Thanos is also as strong as the Hulk and possibly even more powerful. It's safe to assume that Thanos's sword is made out of a metal stronger than vibranium. That combined with Hulk like strength makes the destruction of vibranium completely logical. There's your answer

It's quite simple, really. I'm glad you pointed out two reasons that make a lot of sense, i. e. the sword is made from a material not found on earth probably stronger than vibranium, AND the fact that he struck Cap's shield on its edge. From that scene, there were some blows that hit the center of the shield but it didn't split it in half. The only strikes that broke the shield were on its edges.

First of all Thanos was using both of his hands and his sword was sharp and hit the shield on the edge which made his sword cut through the edge of the shield which was not possible if he attacked on the centre of the Shield, even Thor's hammer couldn't break through it instead it absorbed it's energy and shocked back Thor

you didnt include how thanos is just plain strong, even stronger than hulk as shown in the beginning of infinity war
also in black panther, he doesnt say vibranium is the strongest on earth, he says strongest in the universe. so if thanos's sword was also made of vibranium it would make sense

Thanos' weapon can break Captain America's Shield but can't cut through a tree branch?
Clearly, that was Thanos' full swing go for one-shot kill,
but the damage dealt with the tree branch just like a normal man swing a $10 axe.
