With the help of her AI dog, a sixteen year-old girl must get her sick mother to another planet where a better life awaits. Strong by Jean Lee Connect with the Filmmaker: More About Strong: Superterra is the land of hope, abundant resources, and medical miracles, but the planet’s only access point is a wormhole, which the government strictly controls and regulates. Strong (Nancy Talamantes) is a scavenger of astronautic technology, building a shuttle capable of interstellar travel. This is all for the purpose of taking her sick mother (Jacqueline Garrido) off-planet because the planet Earth no longer has the medical resources to save her. When the government of Superterra announces its plan to close all access to the wormhole in the name of border security, Strong and her mother, with the help of their robotic navigator Spark Pug (Ricardo Moreno Villa, must attempt to make the journey before their time runs out. So, critique: . The acting was actually not too bad. Lots of Elysium comments here, and I agree. The audio mixing was not good. I could barely hear most of the dialogue (oddly, all the Spanish parts. The only dialogue I could understand was the robot. BTW, I'm quite certain that robot is a dressed up version of one of those wavy paw cats you see at Chinese restaurants. Kudos for using what you have for props.
As for the message, here's the deal. It was obvious, and that made it bad. The BEST art buries its message under the art. This one was pretty obvious. Even the robot had a Hispanic accent. Subtly is your friend, otherwise things just get preachy.
All that negativity aside, I liked it. The special effects were fine as far as I'm concerned. The acting was fine too. Soundtrack was acceptable as well. I thought the wormhole looked pretty good.

I don't get it. What was the story Girl tries driving, crashes into other vehicles, burns out engines and electronics, basically breaks everything in sight, still thinks she nailed it. That's just called normality. Happens all over the world a gazillion times per day. All that was missing was at the end, her blaming everything that went wrong on some innocent guy that has nothing to do with any of it. What's next, a video on the importance of breathing Some drama about why the sky is blue Try fiction next time. Maybe even science fiction. I have enough reality irl already.

So the illegal immigrants from a failed society succeeded in breaking into a successful society so they could parasitically feed off of it to provide the medical care that they have failed to provide for themselves I wish the wormhole portal had closed before they had reached it. I hope they are sent back. If she had showed as much drive, ambition and courage to improve her own society, maybe her Mexico wouldn’t be as impoverished as our Mexico.

I am watching the launch vehicle they used to enter the wormhole and I'm thinking that it is today's technology. Travel by such vehicles could be commonplace. Not to go into outer space but from one city to another. The F35 aircraft uses that same technology. Shuttlecrafts are here if companies choose to develop them.

One thing I love to do is come here, read only the title and look at thumbnail then hit play. Read no comments nor description. Then let whatever story happen. Sometimes you get to follow a wondrous journey such as this film. Amazing how it actually speaks truth with what some go through today. 10/10.

as expected. its meh. plotholes, dumb plot, zero viewer agency. how the fck an overclocking robot can push a ship back up to escape velocity why does it have emotions is it sentient much more interesting to explore than the two rat looking women

I liked this. Well paced. Good story, although I expect the mother would say 'go without me'. I laughed at the end. I was expecting the wormhole
to close up on them right at the end, before they make it through.

Sorry for watching this so late. That was cool, how did they do the effects like that I felt like I was in another dimension whilw watching this. I would love to see more themes/worlds like these.
reply

Let me say this:
I LOVED THIS! Please PLEASE make this into a mini-series! I could watch this every week! Also the effects were OUT OF THIS WORLD! Thank you so much for sharing this!

reply

Wonderful! Loved the sound design.
Hope the copilot ended up in the computer of the ship somehow, the mother gets the help she requires, and that daughter keeps shooting for the stars.

Why doesnt it surprise me that the planet closing its borders is an allegory to the wealthy predominantly white western countries while those that get cut off and left behind are BIPoC.

real estate lawyers drawing up deeds to title properties, after surveyors have staked the ground covered, so fences and gates can be erected on land that evolved from orbital mechanics

One of the best thing about these shorts, is that it's out of context and you don't get a clear answer of what the ending might be, leaving it to the viewer to imagine what happened.
reply

Interesting, but I would never leave Earth, sure a space hop to collect an Asteroid, that has all thing precious metals we need, just floating nearby, but hey, enjoy your new Earth
reply

the lack of context makes this quite watchable, the moment we have clarity we end up with a boring, lefty clip on why all borders should be open. please don't clarify.
reply

This was well done, thanks for posting I enjoyed it, DUST is a great platform, really like seeing the creativity and the imagination that is put in these short films.
reply

I suppose it was cheaper to make only 2/3rds of a movie and call it done. To pretend it is arty in some way to leave the final resolution to the viewer.
reply

What a joke, cinema is dying. A propaganda rip off of Elysium, but with a much, dumber message claiming it's ok to dump your problems on others, lol.
reply

Why did I care so much for a little robot with minimal lines and screen time SPAAAAARK!
Great movie though. Acting 10/10. Effects 10/10. Story 10/10

reply

acting quality theme story everything top notch. whatever the year or century there will be a democratic Leader and poverty. Nicely done. thanks
reply

Good animation, good audio, good subtitles. Story generally great with only a couple of things that don't make sense or fit with science.
reply

Subtitles (for the English parts) or maybe a tweaked audio mix would really help. I can't make out most of what the robot is saying.
reply

I felt the passion and love the daughter has for her very sick mother. I'd like to see this story to its end.

Escape from a Communist hell hole to a capitalist world fast becoming a communist hell hole. Just like America!
reply

Very good! The only thing that is a bummer is the FX with the ships flying on earth. It just looks artificial.
reply

I really enjoyed watching such a good story of heart, humanity. Human life should be top priority equal for all
reply

I had trouble understanding what was said, the music was louder than the audio track of the dialogues.

ending edit. she looks back at the cargo of fentanyl, smiles and fires the landing thrusters.
reply

I’m sorry but this sucked. Some potential but more holes than a block of Swiss cheese.

I guess I understand why our taxes are so high on Uber Terra. Even Stargate had a door/wall.
reply

Nicely done. Enjoyed your film. Could have been longer, as in a full length film.
reply

First movie I've seen that uses a bunch of original sounds - and it works so very darned well.
reply

Unfortunately, the ship was hit before it entered by a rouge asteroid. Farwell!
reply

Great story. Beautifully acted. Special effects spot on. Would LOVE to see MORE!
