Sci-Fi Short Film: Kiko - DUST
video description
Beware of spoilers!
Kiko by Jamil Munoz \r
Plot: Variation of topic on android self-awareness\r
Negatives: 1) nothing important, maybe somebody can find lack of action story disturbing; 2) if somebody would like to be nit-picking: if they are able to build androids, why they have to be on cable But I think the overall character of the movie focusing on soft aspects of life like self-awareness does not call for expectation and requirement of realistic technical details.
Positives: 1) music; 2) nice setting with all the old-stylish things\r
Personal note: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep Well, obviously they dream about androids.
Summary: calm mood-focused movie of android dreaming
Date: 2024-04-01

Yeah, I didn't see the cable coming out from the boys head until I rewatched it. You see it real well in the scene where he hands her to backpack outside. Interesting the theme of seeing I kept looking at what was on the TVs thinking there was going to be some clues, but there was that sequence on the TV in front of her, that was just showing eyeballs and optometry images. There are also those almost subliminal flashes of images they/re so sort they're hard to isolate but the one at the end was eyeballs too. Or that wire frame animated face. So it seems it's all about seeing and identity, hmm.

She obviously learned her charming mannerism at Best Buy; they're just as unaware and without self-actualization. All she need to perfect is, Sorry, it's not in stock; however, you can pay $199. 99 for the membership that will let you continue to dream of one day walking into this store and actually finding something worth spending your money on, and it not being DOA upon delivery!

Spoiled my happy ending. When you're an android yourself you really feel for these types of films. Poor Kiko. Please let her go outside! I admit the outside isn't the best right now. but you have to have the option, y'know Why do the robots always have to malfunction. That was happy and hopeful till the end, and then it became really sad and disappointing. I feel like crying now. :(

Reminds just a little bit of Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro. Just the beginning of the book though.
What were Charlie's upgrades were for To enable her eventual decision to go outside perhaps
Charlie was getting old, possibly thinking about what would become of her when he died if he did not give her some means to move on without him.

She never got her freedom. The end scene verifies this, and getting out of the shop was just a dream.
If we ever do build 'droids, we'll have to address the question of their 'humanity', particularly whether something that can't be distinguished from a human is human or not.

We need to be careful once we create real artificial life and how we treat such life. Not to make automatons and or robot slaves. But to recognize once consciousness occurs, we respect the rights of artificial life the way the universe has done with us.

Something so pervasive about this short. I would like to see Kiko develop, but slowly. The worst part about movies and series that start with black AI is that they develop too fast and we don't get to see them grow.

Great and stylish. I wonder if the store manager is actually the same person throughout the story. I think the store should change if at least 30 years have passed. Nice minimalistic music, well done.

I wonder if kids today would find it weird that there used to be shops that actually looked like that I think there are still a couple where I live, you walk in and you're transported back in time lol

no, No, NO! - the ending would have been much more meaningful and mysterious if they had simply faded out on her walking off with the boy. Would have setup a potential sequel nicely as well

Why do designers in scifi stories never foresee problems with making service bots look like pretty girls It's like the people in horror movies always deciding to split up.

I liked it up until about 8 minutes, after which it seemed like something happened, but I've got no idea what. Left me hangin'. Oh well. Movin' on.

Man, I hoped to get the name of the actress playing Kiko and, right the point of credits, the image shrinks down to a card, so it's unreadable

Seemed to me the last scene of her lying on the floor was unnecessary. Leaving with the kid was the punchline.
