Evolution of Video Game Graphics [1947-2023]

It-s truly unbelievable how much video game graphics have evolved over the years! Computer game graphics will never look realistic. Im currently playing (2023) Baldurs Gate 3. Everything looks wonderful in the game, but the dialogues. for heavens sake! This looks so terribly bad. And before anyone says its better in other games, I say: no, it doesnt. The only way to make good looking cut scenes is in cartoon style like in The Legend of Zelda. But this pseudo-realistic stuff just looks artificial. I would like to see more of the zeitgeist of previous generations back. You were simply limited to the coarseness of a 320x200 matrix and had to abstract and come up with something. There was no attempt to depict photorealistic scenarios. And thats exactly why the games looked much better back then, or today theyre picking it up again with pixel art and et voila - it works.\r\n

Mr. Needlemouse was not one of the names suggested. That was misinformation that was passed around as fact. The creator of Sonic doesn't even know how that came up. Mighty was going to be the character for the game when it was suggested that team to draw a concept for a new mascot and Sonic won so they changed the character in the game to be Sonic.

All games released in the last 10 years look pretty much the same. In the old days you could admire the ingeniosity of the parallax effect, or of the driving games that draw 50 meters of the road ahead, or the realistic colors and water movement (Commandos. Now each game looks the same, no variation, boring, they use similar 3d engines.

I remember playing Test Drive on the Amiga, which was 3D racing in 1987 and F/A-18 Interceptor the following year, as a 3D flight-sim. Super simple polygons, but still 3D and way earlier than '91 or '92. Pretty sure the parallax effect was there as two layers in dual playfield mode earlier too.

You forgot all about the computer at home era in the 70s 80s 90s, which is a major fail. Same thing for the Arcade era of the same years which is vaguely mentioned though all of the majors improvements were made during it. Too many fun facts, not enough serious history.

It is interesting that the adventures of Hellblade, i. e. Senua, were not even mentioned, even though the Unreal engine, its graphics and the way it was made, or its real-time motion capture presentation would have been distinctly unique and fitting here.

Gfx might have improved but gameplay has definitely not kept place. Which is understandable. You make a game engine like Unreal 4 and it can be used everywhere but making a good game requires real talent and there and there is not enough to go around.

Nintendo revive the industry because Atari dropped the ball
That-s a understatement. If it wasn-t for the tendo, there would be no video games today they save the whole industry even though Americans invented them first.

how the future gaming would look like? I think, you could put on a VR headset, put ur grandparent old CD into ur playstation 10, and u could be the character of in that film, like do whatever you want, when you want. idk

Fun fact:
Nolan bushnell actually created Chuck E. Cheese, and he actually made it because he wanted an arcade for children to hang out and play while eating pizza alongside with animatronics and the rest is history.

Graphics won't become much better, that's true.
But there's still a room to improve. First thing that comes to mind is some massive and extremely detailed simulation games. Like cities skylines, but much more real

Gave up watching this trash after there was no mention of Sega, the Megadrive, Saturn (it preceded the ps1) or the Dreamcast which preceded the ps2. garbage. Not exactly a history is it?

after more than 30 years of playing games and about 10 years of developing games, I still have just one question: Why the hell 99% percents of games teaches you to kill and destroy?

I believe the first actual video game for entertainment was Strachey's checkers (draughts) program ran on the Ferranti Mark I computer at the University of Manchester, England.

Did you notice that if a scrolling is used that the mind actually creates a perception of depth. Its not merely an interpretation of the view but actual -jumping out- objects.

The overused inflections in this guys voice is extremely annoying. Even though I'm interested in the subject matter I had to stop listening, Sounds like an AI voice or something.
reply

Well now if you consider the hypothesis of AI NPC with AI story branch and with ongoing competition of computing power from various companies, pushing their tech then.

I'm a former game collector, my family caused me to quit due to life complications, costs, and limited space. It was a nice run for me though.

I saw Donkey Kong in your overview, but not the Colecovision, that system should have been there before the NES, it was a lot better than the Atari 2600

-1947-?
Which century are you from, not 21. or 20, must be 19.
Why the dumb images when the video tells the story within the first 1: 33 minutes?

reply

So many mistakes in the video. Horrible. People, please, only look at it as -a general idea of things-, not something that is about real knowledge.
reply

I didn't even know video games were a thing until the 1960s-70s. TIL
Also $450M back then would translate to $2. 1B not $1. 3B in today's money.

COD Zombies is very similar to space invaders in that is has ever increasing waves of enemies with increasing intensity with each round.

Graphics now-a-days are insane! I remember Pong, Space Invaders and Asteroids. Modern graphics are some kind of witchcraft by comparison: -D
reply

just another amazing graphics game: UNRECORD is insane. if that is what games can look like now, in 50 years what will games look like?

There was a Space War arcade cabinet, I knew a guy in the late 80s who had one. It was huge and it kicked out heat like a space heater.

The 15 year period between 1979 and 1994 was astonishing in terms of progress. The likes of this will never be seem again.

10: 26 Everyone has their own names except CEO of Crytek. They call him -hey CEO come here-! Why this hatred towards Turks?
reply

Did anyone else click the video just because the thumbnail seemed to suggest that there was an arcade cabinet in 1947?
