Evolution of Unreal Engine [1995-2023]

Unreal Engine allows for some of the most impressive and mind-blowing graphics you-ll ever see, this is the Evolution of Unreal Engine! Surprised that it wasnt mentioned that UE4 became the first major current gen (at the time) engine with its source available for free to everyone. Its not open source because you cant redistribute it etc. but still it allowed anyone to use these AAA tools for free. Id software opensourced their engines (Quake/Doom) before as well, but they only did so after releasing the next engine which, in turn, stays fully proprietary until it becomes outdated. Another thing not mentioned is Linux support that was introduced in UE4. Icculus ported some UE3 games to Linux using the Mac OS versions but it had to be done for each game separately. So far Linux isnt really the first class citizen in UE4/5, unfortunately, hopefully with Steam Deck it will change.\r\n

As a computer gamer at the age of 46, I was there at the beginning. The only thing I have to say is that UE lost it's charm. It's hard to explain but the magic from the early days are now lost. What I see today is massively impressive, but kind of loses the spirit. Or maybe I just have too much nostalgia from the early days. I still play UT and UT2K4 and love/miss the old total modding community back then.

I was obsessed with the -detail texturing- in Unreal and Unreal Tournament. It was so cool at the time to run up to a wall and see highly detailed textures. The fact Unreal Tournament was made with the budget it was, 16 member team size and 1. 5 years is crazy. Just shows how bloated and corporatized the games industry has become now.

For a guy who started gaming in the early 80's with an Atari 800 to see and play games these days is an absolutely jaw-dropping experience at times. I don't believe gamers under the age of 20 can really understand the incredible advances in graphics, fidelity, animation, and physics that's been made over the history of video games.

UE4 and UE5 are giant steps towards realisme. but still it looks like cartoon. Lumen is good, fluids somulation also good enough. and nanite is real magic. but if you look at those gnew gen games. theyre still cartoon. I think with unreal engine 7-8 we could finally get real looking games.

How you could make this video with no mention of Cliff Bleszinski is astonishing. You really need to go back and research a little deeper than old magazine reviews. For shame. -Cliffy B- is a legend in the Unreal gaming community and should be recognized in any video about Unreal.

ya its amazing how far gamig has come, at the peak if its capability its close to mirroring reality and this happened in only about 40 years.
shure there is stil issues with buffering or however you call it sometimes but its very impressive how far and quick it has come

Was waiting for the moment when Gears of War and Mass Effect would be referenced. Master pieces. UNREAL was an amazing game and for a game released in 1998, it was truly something. Try playing it if you ever get your hands on it including Unreal 2.

I remember playing unreal and being totally amazed. I think I said, this is as good as it-s ever going to get it. Now I-m playing cyberpunk 2077 and I think. Holy shit what are we going to be playing in 2034?
reply

I remember those times, didn't like unreal games, and in fact i don't like unreal engine either. They produced over the years a LOT of games that all look the SAME with it. Thanks to exist nintendo.

Amazing video. Thank you. I love Unreal Engine so much. But i always thought Unreal Engine 3 had the most games. So it was surprising to me to learn that Unreal Engine 4 has more than 400 games.

Is it really that hard to believe graphics have come this far in 20 years? What did you expect for things just to stand still?
Anyway thanks for the upload it was a very interesting watch!

Remember when people started showcasing ray-traced graphics and how we could now do things like mirrors in games? Only to be reminded now about the days of Unreal 1 in the 90s when we had mirrors.

I've been playing PC games since before Windows. Even with all of the games I've played in that time, I never realized how much innovation that Unreal brought to gaming and more. Thank you for this.

The amount of times it's said -you'll never see better graphics- and the amount we've been teached better.
And then there came 2023 with 5. 2 and 5. 3 improvements.

I have fond memories of Dungeon Defenders, also times of betrayal when random co-op players end up joining in to your lobby after missions & steal everything they see.

C'mon! Where are my stylish 3D glasses specifically designed for a particular FPS game like MW3? I know I left them around here somewhere. Is this plausible?

Me: Give me a fun fact for each point after I ended the session.
OpenAI: Sure, I will provide a fun fact after every session you ended, just let me know!

Im still a proud owner of the original Unreal/UT&UT2k4 cds -

The timeline was completely disrupted by you inserting a story about the use of a software product in cinematography in the middle of the video

When Tim Sweeny published the Unreal Engine: Thoughts: -This is perfect for my game Unreal! -
When a few years later: Thoughts: -Aam. HOW? -

reply

While Tim is not a perfect guy, he objectively gave us one of the most versatile engines of all time, and all stemming from a school project

question is. hw much more can they they improve it? I honestly feel theyre hitting a wall in how realistic they can do the graphics.

17: 59 Fortnite wasn't free to play originally. It has Save the World mode first, after that released battle royale mode as free to play.

What I took from the thumbnail.
The Unreal Engine wants to lecture me about micro-aggressions with its problem glasses in 2023.

-Greatest Games ever created-
-shows the crappy star wars game that's basically a theme park ride of you watching a movie-

reply

It's more attributable to the evolution of the GPUs that engines like Unreal or Unity can use more and more detailed graphics.
reply

-Meh, All those fancy engine upgrades and these jabronis still can't make a game that matches Deus Ex much less surpasses it. -
reply

I remember when Unreal first came out, there was massive talk about how beautiful the sky was. And the sky was very impressive.
