Good to see Absolver on this list. I was wondering if they were going to mention it, as it seems to be quite a forgotten, or at the very least, not a very talked about game, but I really liked it. The way you could select what moves you had in your arsenal to create your own unique fighting style was awesome! It was quite a hard game, but once you started to master your unique style you felt like a badass!
Shame the game wasn't very long though and didn't get many expansions. It almost felt like a bit of a tech demo at times. Hopefully they'll make a sequel one day. They had an amazing foundation to build something truly special on

I think the arcade version of Ninja Gaiden was a really cool side-scrolling fighter. There were a lot of nifty interactions you could do, like flipping in the air and grabbing enemies around the neck to throw them across the screen. Backflipping off phone booths, grabbing onto hanging signs and kicking out at enemies. I always thought it was a shame it was never released on home consoles. The NES series had a totally different playstyle.

I'm so glad to see Breakdown and Jet Li Rise to Honor (even if it is just an Honorable Mention) on this list. Both games were huge parts of my childhood, and I love to see them getting some love on a Gameranx video!
Also God Hand, even though it wasn't something I remember from my childhood, I'm always glad to see it on a list!

A great list but i'd also add Mad Max to it. Very satisfying and fun melee in a similar vein to Arkham. Hits feel very impactful and heavy and is a lot of fun, the game is primarily melee because ammo for guns is scarce so becoming skilled at melee is about survivability and you can save ammo as a panic button or for bosses.

Great list! An older one I'd mention is Jade Empire. Take the great writing of old school Bioware and throw in a fighting game-like combat system and you get a combo as satisfying as peanut butter & chocolate. There was a wide variety of different fighting styles, too, so you could find something that worked for your play style.

Hand to hand is some of my favorite ways to fight in games. Hell, in resident evil 6 i was pulling off clean kung fu and wwe moves than shooting my guns most of the time. Sleeping Dogs, Sifu, Absolver, even the simple ones like Batman Arkham and Spider-Man PS4, it s just therapeutic honestly

In the classic Streets of Rage your health wouldn't regenerate after using your special move. These current games really baby the player. Holding hands all the way through. Guess you have to do that if you want the casual person to play. Sucks that games suffer for that sake.

Can't forget to mention Enter The Matrix on PS2. Granted, yes, there was a lot of shooting action, but the hand to hand combat was necessary to take out the agents and other parts. Using your focus ability really made you feel like a bad ass while karate chopping enemies

First off, I love gameranx! You guys are awesome! I Enjoy the gameplay and recommendations bcuz I m new to gaming. But it would be nice to have a quick mention if a game is PS/XB/PC. I m always disappointed when I can t play a game because I am not on that platform.

Jade Empire. It's on the easier side compared to many of these maybe but it's still a challenging game that will have you make split second decisions on which stance to use and if you should attack or dodge etc. Good game, wish we could get a remaster or remake.

Urban reign is also a great spin off from the Tekken series and was really brutal and fun to play especially with 4 players, oh the friendships lost there
And an old PS1 game isn't great by today's standards was fighting force, but it was so much fun back then

I saw breakdown and had to chime in. I loved the game as a teenager. Stayed up for like 24 hrs to play it and took off school the next day. That ending theme song was my jam! Trust company - take it all. It still gets stuck in my head from time to time.

I always preferred melee games, gun combat is boring and annoying to me. Even in shooting games, I like to play melee or shotgun, gotta be close range. Thank you for showing some love for the Yakuza series, probably one of the best game series imo

I'd like to point out that the combat in Sleeping Dogs is not inspired by the Batman Arkham games. The game is a spiritual successor to the True Crimes series, which had a similar combat system. Both games came out well before Arkham City did.
