I graduated small (still) photography tech school ten years ago and immediately became more interested in video after saving up and purchasing a Canon 7D (which had video functionality. I knew composition and exposure, but that was about it when it came to video. I never stopped grinding and learning and Indy Mogul was always there through the good and the bad teaching me technique. Fast forward ten years later I'm a 6 time Emmy nominee and a 1 time Emmy award winner. I have a regular 9-5 job shooting, editing and producing in a marketing department, creating sometimes dozens of television commercials a month, and I love it. Still using DSLRs, run and gun DIY set ups and Indy Mogul is still there hustling, improving and growing with me, and teaching me. I still watch episodes and quietly whisper to myself I suck lol.

I love Nigel's take on doing more with less. On smaller movies, I feel like a lot of DP's and Grip/Electric guys really want to build shots for their reels, more than serve the needs of a story that doesn't have enough money to tell itself, which is what most Indy films are. I worked on a small film that started out with a high falutin' DP and good lighting crew, who tweaked and primped and got BEAUTIFUL footage, but by the second week, we were so far behind schedule that we wound up speeding through the rest of the script with minimalistic, flat lighting. The editors and producers were screaming, because the footage looked like two different films. Everyone on a small picture has to know how to compromise, and when not to.

Something which forgotten when multi camera is discussed is that it has a high risk to SCREW OVER AUDIO! Bad bad bad news. :-(
The solution here: you must at minimum have a Sound Mixer plus one Boom Op per camera (so if it is a two camera shoot, then it is a three person sound department: a mixer + two boom ops.
Plus you must must pay attention to their advice! If they're telling you this wide + tight combo of shooting isn't working for them (hint: it isn't, then adjust your schedule and shoot the tights together and do the wide shot separately. (don't mix it with a tight)

Wow, this is really good stuff and I keep learning here from the people who do actual movies. I want to encourage you guys keep this on and on, and please do these videos on film design, production, script writing, cinematography, etc as I believe many indie film makers and those who want to start find these videos very useful. I certainly learnt a lot. Big thanks.

What more can be said about this great video. I cherish each episode that Indy Mogul brings out; these videos with the people behind the films are fantastic! The wisdom that is shared and the enlightenment is so profound. Again, not much more can be said, only that I thank you for making this and I look forward to many more.

09: 31 not gonna lie, but I was about to cry by the beauty of this knowledge and wisdom. Thanks for inspiring me heavily and giving me immense hope, but this is what really push my drive to the unlimitness. Going to watch this video probably daily from now on.

I love this. I always get inspiration from these DP talks. Now, I'm inspired to use French Overs. They really seem like a more intimate way to capture a deep conversation between two characters. Thanks, Indy Mogul!

Would be great to have some content about shooting in black & white! How to light, how to use contrast, what about the shadows. Everytime I try it looks so much gray then shoud be.

I love that it's possible to aim for simplicity like this. Huge lighting setups intimidate me, and just seem to slow things down too much for my taste. Great video.

That was actually great practical to be thought about and used on other productions. Thank you very much Indy Mogul and Nigel!

It's amazing. Is it possible for you to interact with Claire Mathon for Portrait of a lady on fire?
