A gentle reminder that while these tips are really good to keep in mind (I use them myself, it's important to break the rules when it suits your story. Also this is all opinion.
For example, I think adding fat to the falcon punch scene gave it a lot of flavor and made it funnier. When he failed to punch that guy in the stomach, the editor chose to stay on his face a little longer. The result was this awkward feeling which might feel wrong, but in my opinion it was correct to make it feel wrong because hell, that was an awkward punch!
Im not great at explaining things, but think of it this way. The Original: you think he felt my punch yet. well. crap. the new version: you think he felt my punch yet?

if you don't have money for a professional non linear editor that allows multiple tracks, try hitfilm 3 express. it is probably the most professional software you can get for free abd the great thing is it also works as a compositor. unfortunately if you want ur compositor to be useful, you will need plugins that range from 9 to 80 dollars

I agree with Daniel Case, the 'dialogue overlapping' bit was not explained properly. You should explain the precise reasoning for when you cut and why, otherwise, is it just random? The two examples are virtually identical.

The dialogue overlap helped a lot. I like doing after movies of rave festivals and something that gets boring, and I can tell it is, is when the next footage comes in on the beat. Can't overdo it! Thanks.

I have a different term for Killing Your Babies'; when I have a shot/scene that's hard to part with, I say I'm 'married' to it, and when I axe it from the final cut I 'divorce' it _ Great stuff!

I only do the dialogue overlap if one person starts talking suddenly or immediately. But if they pause, or sigh, or take a breath or something I don't do dialogue overlap.

Can you make any version of sony vegas work to make good edits not just the more expensive editing software? For example can you use the lower end Vegas Platinum.

your music becomes obnoxious after 4: 33, I was hoping this would be addressed further on as another no-no, but alas not: (
Quality tips nevertheless. Thanks.

How about fixing jump cuts - seems like that one could easily be applied to your video here. Like the dialogue overlap bit. Nicely done there.

At the intro to this video you had a 3 links to other topic/videos. How did you make that intro? Can I do that with Final Cut Pro?

I'm with Daniel, I've watched a few times and still don't get the first example. Maybe it's the example, maybe it's me?

how long would 2001: a space odyssey be if you cut the fat off it? it has so much over artistic long scenes
