SONY a7SIII vs ALEXA Mini LF vs VENICE 6K It's never been so close!

Dave Maze takes the Sony a7Siii and puts it against two of the most respected cinema cameras in Hollywood. The Arri ALEXA Mini LF, and the Sony CineAlta Venice 6K full-frame camera. Can the hybrid camera hold it's own? Or do the movie cameras eat its lunch? We think it's never been closer in terms of image quality and performance. 00

I followed Dave's advice and bought the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II, and I think even that camera can produce some amazing, cinematic results. I'm making a short film with that and the Panasonic Lumix G85, and I think they both look great. Not Alexa or Venice great or even Sony a7S III great, but extremely impressive in their own right.
Yes, I understand people need to match footage together, but if all of the film industry just got rid of their Alexas and switched to a7S III cameras, I don't think audiences would even notice. This camera definitely deserves Netflix Studios approval. Side-by-side comparisons are only so useful.

Is the a7s III comparable to an Alexa or a Venice? No, but it's certainly comparable to an FX3/6/9! And that's probably the more reasonable comparison. It's not matching $60, 000+ cameras, but it probably does match $6, 000 and $10, 000 cameras quite well. And that's really saying something for a $3, 500 camera.
You can still make outstanding videos and movies with the a7s III. I would guess it's a better image than the FS7.

Great comparison video! The A7SIII stacked up well, though the yellows appeared to really over-saturate. One question about the magenta shift: I completely saw what you meant when you pulled the magenta out and messed up the grade entirely. Do you think, rather than subtract it away, if you compressed it in a specific region (maybe in the darks) that you could get rid of the magenta look without damaging skin tones?

Honestly dude at that level of camera it just comes down to what the hell you need in for. Are you planning on doing a lot of color correction for a film? Are you going to have a bunch of video 5 mins or less and need it organized in camera? - Then Alexa is your man. Don't have the time for color correction or have a lot of long day takes where like in doc or reality then go with the Sony.

For a7siii vs arri, I could easy tell that left was Arri. The scene with your shirt was the dead giveaway, yeah. But the difference is just a slight magenta hue, which I don't think is worth $56000
For a7siii vs Venice, I could barely tell and kept going back and forth on which I preferred. However, I think I overall preferred the left, and expected that one to be Venice. Wow!

Hi, guys! )
Cool comparison! Thank you)
Blue things is more blue in the Sony a7s3. Grey things looks with margenta.
Ari more realistic skin tone.
The A7S3 is a cool camera, but the blue and margenta shades immediately make it stand out from other cameras.
I want to buy a Sony a7s3, but the problem with the shades stops me.

I was POSITIVE Camera 2 was going to be the Arri. Dynamic range was better, it was sharper and I preferred the colours. The reveal really surprised me. I kept thinking to myself that there was much less detail in the shadows of camera 1, especially in the guys hair. And it looked oversaturated.

is not how you shot and how is the image out of the box, but how you can grade and recovery under or overexposed image, low light capability to preserve vibrance color, highlights lights falloff ecc. This things is what we like to see for to be able to compare the cameras!

being a colorist I would ask people to choose even bmpcc 4k instead of Sony S3.
Sony is good for run n gun and low light. but when it comes to pushing limits to edge. Sony don't stand a chance.
fX 9 is also great. but Komodo eats up it in breakfast

call me crazy, but the a7s3 had better skin tones. the alexa had warm shadows, and a green shift to the browns, as well as magenta a tad over saturated where the sony brings the magenta towards a red which helps hide blemishes in the skin.

Noise performance of a camera that has non against one that does. The smearing at high ISO's in the A7sIII is obvious.
Would be much more interesting to see the comparison against the Venice footage on its highest setting with NR in post.

reply

The Venice and Alexa doesnt have the magenta issue because the have an IR filter built in. The A7sIII don't, if you want to use the later as a B cam along with a Venice or Alexa, using a filter in front of the lens its a quick fix.
reply

You should go into more detail as to why the a7s is not same kind of tool as alexa. You know it intuitively, but for everyone scratching their heads seeing similar image quality, something extra needs to be explained

I can't believe the A7Siii looked so good compared to the Venice! They used the Venice for Bad Boys 3 and Top Gun 2 for crying out loud! And the FX3/FX6 apparently have better low light performance than the ASiii!
reply

Would be great to compare the supreme used on the siii! Film set usability/big budget - rent a cinema camera. But there is no longer the 'cheaper hybrid camera' reason for bad footage!
reply

I love Arri colors so much then on the first one I prefered and was confident number 2 was the Arri.
No way it was was the A7s3. I first didn't believe it.
XD

Superficial lesson: a7SIII is epic camera tech.
Meaningful lesson: epic camera tech is completely irrelevant if your footage is utterly devoid of meaning and story.

You should use slog 3 with ITU709, not with s-gamut, that's because it's not real s-gamut, it's a representation of it, you won't have color issues with ITU709.
