I'm a newcomer to indy filmmaking fresh out of high school, without a lot of knowledge or money. My humble gear is a Xacti VPC-CG10 (around $200, gets an okay HD picture I guess but really needs a microphone jack, a $40 tripod and a few other, older ones that were probably cheaper, two $15 mics (they're terrible, and whatever camera rigs me and my friends can throw together out of wood and PVC pipes.

It's really a tough business to get into. There are a lot of videographers and not a lot of videography jobs. Freelance is an option but you're going to need to be constantly looking for work. You are your own manager. There are websites in the US like Mandy and ProductionHub but I don't know what there is in the UK.

Griffin, question: I'm planning a shot which is going to be from a first person perspective, ending with the character looking in a mirror. I know there is a trick to pulling this off, but I haven't found a video demonstrating it. Do you of one, or could there be one from IndyMogul in the future?

Fortunately in the sun, a lot of lenses will look great (even without wide apertures. I would think for something active like surfing, you'd want a fairly wide lens, in the 14 to 20mm range, to capture a wide field of view (assuming you're close to the action)

I would think so. I've used one of those big truck bed covers (white) as an improvised reflector. It'll have to be a bright light source, though, like the sun, and you'll probably have to get it really close to the subject you're trying to light up.

For people on a reasonably small budget(let's say $1000) I would say get the Canon rebel T2i($600, a rode video mic pro($200, a simple (probably diy) light setup and depending on what kind of videography that will determine the mount/tripod

One way to do it: Angle the mirror, and place your actor so he/she is in the shot, but not the camera. Might not work well in a tight space, because you don't want the audience to notice the tilt of the mirror.

Are you going to make your own short film? I would like to see what you would come up with considering that your last filmfight entry was interesting. I want to see you bring that to the next level!

I've seen a decent tutorial for this on Instructables involving a zip-lock bag and a UV filter. I usually pack a garbage bag with a couple rubber bands in case of rain or dust storm.

I liked the price, flip-out LCD, no 12-minute file limit, on screen audio meter and zebra stripes. Lots of features that make the Panasonic GH2 feel like a very video-friendly DSLR.

I'm trying my best to get into this but it is hard with bills, school, and work I was wanting to ask how did you start how did you learn to video shoot and edit please let me know
reply

I'm using a lot of light to illuminate the scene, so the light from the LCD won't affect anything. If my face was closer to the camera, I could use the camera LCD instead.

maybe if he ever decides to get a bigger camera, he wont have to buy another glidecam. thats what i would do, in a way, its a way to save money. go big or go home

Awesome! I loved BFX but I wish people would stop complaining about it being over. Between you and Friday101, indymogul is really bringing back some good content

Thanks a bunch I will check it out. Griffin, you rock, you make quality stuff and you are packed with oodles of knowledge. Thank you for everything you do!

You may want to record audio separately. Maybe into a computer, or mobile phone, or portable audio recorder like the Zoom H4n or Tascam DR-40 (cheaper.

xD We started off with the same camera. Mine stopped wanting to charge though so now the batteries don't work and buying new one's don't help: (

Could you do an episode on shooting weddings? That would be awesome!
PS: I'm glad you don't still have the insurance-salesman mustache. :P

Griffin was incredibly handsome when he was a teen! lol, I would say he's handsome now, but that would be wrong because I'm a teen.

Griffin, I have some old satellite dishes and was thinking of painting them white to use as light reflectors. Do you think this will work?
