Heres what I think happened: Guy feels like Spade is having a bit of go at him near the start of the interview, even though Spade is just trying to joke around and banter with him ( well, youre from _England. _. Guy interprets this as a dominance challenge, and his mind goes into overdrive. Adrenaline/testosterone start spiking up, and his body goes into fight-or-flight mode, getting ready for action. In my experience, this state of mind makes it very difficult to speak or concentrate on anything else. Then as the interview goes on, Guy realizes that Spade is just playing around and isnt an actual threat, so he calms down a little and tries to shift gears and steer the interview back on track.
This sort of reaction comes from growing up around guys who start running their mouth right before they take a swing at you.

Is Guy Ritchie pissed because Spade starts off talking about Ritchie's illustrious past films, like Ritchie is a little sensitive about the recent decline in his career? He'd rather just talk about the present & not be drawn back into a past he's failed to match with his more recent directorial efforts?
If so, he needs to take a lesson from Spade who actually HAS that self-deprecating humour Brits are so famous for. In fact, Spade has turned this very interview into a very funny story about how agonizing this was.
Spade knows how to turn his own failures into hilarious stories, to the point where in real life Spade is way more successful at everything than his stories would have you believe. (case in point, Spade blames himself for this interview flopping, when we all know who actually failed here.

I think i figured out why it was awkward. When David said you're from england, aren't they fancy over there? Guy took it as an insult because he thought he was calling him pretentious (which he wasn't, americans calling Brits fancy is a compliment. This is why Guy responded with his tasteful jab, which he hoped would be seen as a playful comeback, but it was seen as an insult out of the blue.

I'm like this with people of David's humor and conversation style. I'm not fond of beating around the bush or letting ppl take a piss while they're on my time.
Guy ritchie was incredible on joe rogan- which is an actuL interview platform that doesn't devolve into trivial banter in gags.

I love how David carried the conversation along. Ritchie acted like he not only had a stick up his butt, he had the whole damn forest. He's there to promote his movie and David carried him. Spade is a pro and hilarious, I adore him.

I think this was just a culture clash. Honestly Guy was being perfectly pleasant, he just seemed like he was waiting to be asked a specific question, whereas Spade was just talking and waiting for Guy to jump in.

Ritchie was put off by the small talk. Spade should have read the situation and asked more about Ritchies work. He wasnt being rude, he was nervous and confounded by Spades approach.
