Unboxing and review of the Live Gamer HD PC capture card by AVerMedia. Some things I meant to mention: the card supports 4: 2: 2 YUV color and there are planned updates for recording to formats other than H. 264 in the future. Possibly even more precise bit rate and frame rate adjustments as well, which would be awesome. See my review of the AVerMedia Game Broadcaster HD: Thanks to AVerMedia for sending me the card to review! My PC specs (used for this review): AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition 3. 2GHz Corsair Dominator 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3-1333 SDRAM EVGA 02G-P3-1568-KR GeForce GTX 560Ti 2GB Video Card Gigabyte 8GA-990FXA-UD3 r1. 1 ATX Motherboard 3TB (320GB+750GB+2TB) Seagate 7200RPM SATA HDDs Thermaltake TR-700P TR2 BRONZE 700W PSU Antec Three Hundred Black Steel ATX Tower Case Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

I know this was 1 month ago but I'd just like to point something out.
He probably plays the game at 720p windowed anyway, I know I do. When fraps records, it records the game window (Or desktop if set to record Desktop Aero. I'd say this video is just emphasizing that it can record an even bigger screen and with a better performance than fraps.
Hope this helps man. It's not my intention to sound like an asshole.

Great review. Would have liked to see more graphic intensive games compared with software solutions such as fraps/dxtory/msi afterburner vs the hardware encoding on the card. Possibly some file size comparison also for similar quality settings in the software solutions. But overall, great review thanks.
And thanks for reminding me about my old Diamond Monster 3D Voodoo1 4mb card haha: ) Forgot all about it.

This capture card sucks. At least for me it does. When I'm playing, it randomly goes black. Each time it goes black, it stays like that for 5+ seconds. I end up having to look at my other monitor and try to play from the capture screen of the software. It's so annoying. Where can I contact AVerMedia? Also, if you're planning to get this card, sorry if you encounter black screens like me. I have a boss PC, too -. -

Excellent review, I have a question I hope you can answer. Windows 7 does not support multiple audio outputs simultaneously, so if I play games with a USB based headset, can I still capture the audio for a recording while hearing the audio on my headset? I get that it functions as a pass through, but it looks like it needs either HDMI or a 3. 5 mm pin for audio. I hope that makes sense. Thanks in advance.

The Game Broadcaster HD is what I use to record mine, though it's not ideal since you have to use some RF/composite to HDMI adapters to make it work. Before that I used a Kworld USB TV Stick, which works fine, but the quality leaves something to be desired and it doesn't play well with software other than Kworld's. See my review of -Cho Aniki- for an example of the Kworld footage.

The law doesn't forbid you to record video games. Sony put this HDCP protection to prevent people pirating the games or movies in Bluray DVD. So I do not see anything illegal on recording video games here. If you are afraid about this then buy an XBOX and you can record without HDCP protection. Recording is legal, pirating is not.

Neither, get the new Live Gamer Portable and get all the advantages of both products, including time-shifting, as well as an SD card input for PC-free recording.
The LGHD is still pretty fresh, though, and every driver update makes it better. The easy button is indispensable for recording and playing on the same PC.

I have a question. I want to buy one of these for streaming at 720p 60 fps since my pc cant handle it. But I have heard that capture cards are useless with using only one pc? But I thought the whole point of getting a capture card was so you don't have to have a high end pc or a second pc to stream. Can anyone clarify?

It's honestly the single worst capture device I've ever used. It works, but only just, and I had one problem or another every time I used it. Doesn't help that there are plenty of Chinese knock-offs that are even worse, so chances are you'll end up with one of those instead of the slightly better official ones.
reply

Wow I had no idea of the Chinese knock-offs. Thanks for the info and responding so quickly! Are there any good capture cards that you can recommend that will record Atari 2600, TRS-80, and Atari Jaguar footage? I don't want to mod those consoles, or buy an expensive Jaguar AV cable. Or use emulation.
