This place was built in the mid-1960's and just has a creepy vibe to it nowadays. An awesome place to check out if you like (mostly) abandoned places. More information/photos here

That mall reminds me of one I used to visit for years in Northern Ireland. Unlike that mall you were in, it had a number of always open shops like a bargain books shop, newsagents and place that sold food and sometimes an empty shop. The halls were long and had tall ceilings and were not brightly lit so you got a certain feel when you were in it that other places didn't have, especially with the background music playing and there was always one shop which was like a seasonal place which changed its stock every season and was full of oddities I didn't seen elsewhere.
There was a electronics repair shop in it that I used to visit every so often and it used to have the odd GBA game and old PC games among other electronic parts for devices like radios, old computers, guitars, speakers etc. (the first games I remember getting from it were Speedy Eggbert and Demonstar for PC) and the guy who ran it would fix electronic devices like radios and would restring/tune guitars but half the time I was there, it was closed.
I was really surprised by how few people were in it, even during times like Christmas, especially when it was in a big town not far from lots of houses and had a restaurant right beside it at one point which had good food if I am remembering correctly. Too bad it was taken over a couple of years ago by a large supermarket as I kind of liked going to it, just to see what new random stuff there was for sale in the shops as a lot of it kept changing (except a couple of shops which were always there) and also to get away from the crowds.

I am a 58 year old native of Asheville. The Innsbruck Mall was originally called The Tunnel Road Shopping center when it first opened in the late 60s early 1970s. This was just prior to the Asheville Mall construction on S Tunnel Road. It was at the time when department stores and other businesses were leaving downtown and moving to malls. It was renamed Innsbruck Mall in the early 80s I believe and it never really faired well after that point. Originally when it was Tunnel Road Shopping Center, it had many thriving businesses and popular restaurants. One was actually Bailey's Cafeteria which later became Hallmark Cafeteria and another famous night spot was The Bavarian Cellar and the original location of Frank's Pizza. There was a discount department store called Masons that eventually became Brendles and is now Big Lots. A camera store has been there since the beginning along with the NC Tag office, a cosmotology school, a bridal shop and a dry cleaner. Office Depot was added in the 90s. There were originally many shops. One was Tru Fit Fashions a dress shop and also a pet shop. I've heard that it has been sought after for years by developers but due to long leases on current shops, it is nearly impossible to work out. It's a shame it's so desolate. makes you wonder how they afford to keep it open.

My parents had the dry cleaners in the back of the mall for 30 years and this is where I grew up! I learned to ride a bike in the parking lot and my sister and I use to play on the escalators and had many games of hide and seek throughout the mall. After my father passed away the cleaners stayed in the family but my mother opened Asheville Wedding Center further down in the mall until 1994 when she passed away. Makes me sad to see how it is today but enjoyed watching. Brought back a rush of memories. Nostalgia for sure: ) Thanks for sharing.

Well, honestly, it is sometimes like that here. If you ever take a trip to the US, I recommend going with a friend at all times. You DO have a moderate to high chance of running into homeless people, drunks, chavs, etc. I have encountered a homeless person or two. Oddly, homeless people tend to be the best source of information regarding why the place went down the drain. Still, best to be careful. And yes, you might accidentally come across a few high school students sneaking in to shag!

This was my home away from home. My parents owned the dry cleaners that is at the back of the mall (where you stopped at the directory. After my father passed, my mother sold the dry cleaners and started Asheville Wedding Center in this same mall. When I say home away from home I mean I learned to ride a bike in the parking lot! My sister and I climbed and played on those escalators more than any playground! This was an awesome mall in its time! Way creepy and sad now -

Malls in general are a dying trend. I remember when I was younger, I used to go to the Westminster Mall nearby Thornton, Colorado fairly often. Nowadays, the entire mall is done for, and all that is left are a few stores like Joslin's/JCPenney's. how sad. but that's retail in a nutshell for ya, because of places like amazon.
Well, nuts to them, I'll shop retail. Nothing more satisfying.

I remember coming here in 2000-2001 as a kid when my parents needed to go to Office Depot, DMV or Ingles. I would just hangout there and ride those escalators up and down all the time, because I was easily amused. I hope they are able to do something with this, but keep it's structure, but I love walking through it and seeing this unique dead mall.

So they just leave abandoned malls unlocked and opened, beckoning any would be nomad to wander inside?
You should have looked for a shortcut inside the toilet stall.
Had you filmed this at night time, and added some type of noir filter, it would have resembled an ultra realistic Condemned, especially if some of those weird people had showed up.

We used to have a mall exactly like that where I live. It belonged to an american company that left the country after the financial crysis back in 2001. It was huge, and deserted most of the time. Weird thing is that over the 10 or so years that it was abandoned, a McDonalds managed to somehow be the only surviving business until the mall's reactivation.
