8: 55 Pretty much my opinion. Could have lived without zombies etc. Picking Lord Bafford's manor clean was probably the most fun part I had in this game. And I tried so many things back then, even dueling the golden guards which is extremely hard to accomplish successfully, but I managed to do that eventually.
10: 03 I totally get your point. This is a stealth game, but then again it throws like 16 virtually invulnerable zombies that you totally can't hide from at all since they somehow sense you anyway at you that kill you with like 2-3 blows and you only got like 6-10 shots of holy water depending on how well you robbed the poor victim from the level before to be able to deal with at least some of them, still making you having to run for your money from the others, literally. I mean, remember: It's about Stealth! Just right after the absolutely brilliant first level, the second one literally was one of the worst I've ever played in my life. Such a bloody contrast to what's the game supposed to be in total.
Anyway, I'd also totally recommend the game, especially the first two, but also Deadly Shadows. And do yourself a favour and go check out The Dark Mod if you want more of this.
If there's one single game (or series) that definately _NEEDS_ a VR remaster, it's this one. Period.

I used to start playing Thief about ten pm and play it until the sun came up, all the time sitting in a completely dark room. SO MUCH FUN!
It is definitely my favorite game of all time.
I'll never understand, however, why eveybody hates on the supernatural stuff in it. When Thief II came out, I wsa sorely disappointed with it's lack of weird critters and bizarre twisted environments. I'm honestly not even sure I ever finished that game. I know I never finished the third game. To me they just didn't stack up to the original.
I would gleefully sit alone in only the light of the screen, completely still in-game, and watch and wait for the perfect time to launch an arrow or bludgeon an unwary guard. And I would sneak around so slowly in levels like the haunted cathedral, scared out of my wits, trying to never catch the attention of those things, whatever they were. I don't remember. But damn! The audio design in that game was stellar! It truly was the source of all of my dread while playing. It was perfect.
Anyway, I'm glad to see someone enjoying this game so long after it's release. It's well worth it.

I played it over and over for years at expert level. Loved it. I especially liked the stealth aspect because I could set my own pace and come out of the shadows at will. FPS's are typically a run in, kill everything that moves at a caffeine induced rage pace that would scare the Trickster into a sobbing little girl. This was a refreshing change. Doom and Quake were fun for a while, but Thief: The Dark Project was a much more relaxing environment where you felt more in control. Eventually I would try subduing every soul in the buildings and stacking them up in the vestibules just to see if I could. That was fun. Searching every room on every floor, whacking the unsuspecting and dragging them to the front one by one. Good times. Goood times.

A lot of people prefer the supernatural undead stuff. I like all of it. Metal age has some better level design, but I wouldn't say anything in Thief 1 is -maze-y-, aside from maaaaybe some parts of the forgotten city (constantines manor is kinda mazey too. Every area is unique enough that they're not hard to place in a 3D space, and the levels are built closer to real world standards than most games of the era, and probably even now. Though games now are better at faking it by essentially keeping you on a rail and locking off the rest of the world with convenient set pieces.

One of my favourite series!
I can't really agree with you that the combat is more fun in doom though, in my book both sword- and bow fight are done very well in Thief, and you being in the position of disadvantage is intended, since you are meant to be a thief, not a war tank. This is a first person sneaker, not first person shooter after all. Combat should be the last resort normally, unless you really want to go that way. Same goes for undead, you can sneak around them perfectly.

Your biggest mistake was playing Thief Gold. The original Dark Project didn't have the clunky back-and-forth of stealth and Tomb Raider type missions. It featured extremely linear storytelling that gradually got eerier, darker and phased you into the Tomb Raider type missions as it progressed into the Trickster's story arch. I actually really pity anyone whose first encounter with Thief was Gold because Gold ruined the original IMHO. Thumbs up if you agree

I personally hated the zombie/demon levels. I loved the story though. When I first played it, I was hoping all the levels would have been like the ones where you go into a manner or museum (which you do) and steal stuff, but allot of levels have you stealing from the dead (which isn't too bad) or sneaking past the Trickster's hoard (which I hated. But, like you, I still highly recommend this game to any PC gamer. In some circles, it's a requirement.

Its 2020 and after being in lockdown for what feels like forever I found myself wandering back to some of my old game titles. And all I can say is wow. I had forgotten just how engaging this game is. Especially with some of the fan mods installed which improve graphics etc. Loved every minute of it and feel sad that there has never been a modern continuation of the story. And yes I know there was a reboot but it was just the same.

I love the undead parts, or the supernatural in it. It's not overexplained, the first time you for instance hear the ghost which speaks backwards was a really strange experience. The haunts are also one of the best enemies in any game ever.
Be sure to enable EAX if you can, especially with a Creative card is it enhances the experience tremendously, just one of those things that I wish was still around.

I remember my mom randomly came home with this game way back in the day - I scoffed at it (internally, having never heard of it, and thought it was some dodgy, bargain-bin PC trash. When I started it, the graphics were jarring but charming, and the game was actually really good - I think having enjoyed MGS1 and discovering this was another stealth-based gem really impacted my interest in those genres. Thanks mom!
