LGR - Thoughts on the Thief Reboot
video description
more than 2 enemies head on will only result in a quick death which makes the Blackjack a very weak and ineffective weapon. At least, the original Thief had swords, a warhammer, explosives and mines. Suffice to say, Thief's combat is very weak and clunky. Don't even get me started on the giant stairway puzzle later in the game which is absolutely infuriating to say the least. Of course, I have to mention the next to last boss battle which is one of the cheapest boss battles that I've ever encountered. You fight in a small room where you have to turn several wheels, lock pick a door, all while fighting a boss that can one hit kill you. Your suppose to move counterclockwise in order to avoid the boss's attacks, but it doesn't even work because of how cheap he is with his attacks. Not only that, but if you fail to lock pick the door, you automatically die, which restarts the boss battle all over again. Also, your vulnerable while pick locking the door as well as when your turning the wheels. One of the biggest positives that the game has is that you are able to customize the difficulty level to your liking and there are a lot of options to tweak in the process of doing so. In conclusion, I'd say that the Thief reboot is a decent game, but its also one that has numerous issues as well. Thanks for the great video!

This was a better reboot than people gave it credit for. I have the concept art book and it is pretty neat. I do wish they'd had a few more straight up -rob this mansion- levels. I think the first couple missions of the original Thief were some of the best. I like the idea of going into a stone mansion and seeing the brightly lit (making you hungry for shadows) opulent areas inside with red velvet, crystal, gold, etc. I wish they'd put a few more of these kinds of missions and had them contrast the sombre look. Slipping in through the kitchens and servant quarters up into the sitting rooms, sleeping chambers, and dining areas. ah, they missed an opportunity to go nuts with a sort of steampunkish Gilded-Age interior, contrasted to the shadowy streets and spooky cellars of the rest of the world.
I also just miss the artistic 2D animations and voice acting of the Looking Glass era games. More focus on artistic creativity would do wonders. Half of Thief's joy is the aesthetic and atmosphere, much like its Looking Glass cousin, System Shock 1 and 2.
Looking Glass Studios had master sound designers. I think System Shock 2 won tons of awards for the sound, which is probably why the audio diaries you find remain so powerful to this day. I think sound design is often overlooked or taken for granted in movies and games. If I was making a Thief game, I'd have the soundtrack commissioned by a dark ambient musician like

I know I'm likely to get burned at the stake for this but; this game looks fine.
Each Thief game from what I've read seems to have a good amount of change between games, this doesn't seem any different.
Fans complain about EVERY game change ever, but if games like this don't try new things they become Call of Duty with nothing moving it on.
Should Castlevania not have changed? Just level to level progress? I dunno Symphony of the Night was a big change but many seem to love that game, as it's loved as one of the best games on the PSOne.
Mario went 3D and that exploded with crazy fanfare. Metroid went first person and that is hailed as a great series.
Doom 3 went more story based and that game was VASTLY different, but wound up being really nice.
FFVII sure wasn't similar to previous titles, at all, but that's really loved by many, hated too but whatever-
I'm just trying to say change isn't always bad, and I don't think this game is so much change as it's more like the first game of a new series, and if you're expecting 100% perfection, you're just gonna be disappointed. Let's be honest here, if there's a new game. which is likely, they'll probably try to make it more open.

Hated this game. It takes Thief and turns it into a series of context-sensitive action points, it feels one step away from being a QTE game. You say that the original games were also linear but I feel that that's not really true, they were linear in that there was a story with missions set in a specific order, but the maps themselves were as nonlinear as can be. Unlike this game, they don't drop you behind checkpoints that you can't get back up into. Just think of the bank robbery mission in Thief 2, there's all kinds of ways to get into that bank, things to explore and ways to go about it, much like the original Deus Ex. There's none of that stuff here.
I also really dislike the -body awareness- thing, because it just doesn't really work as well as you want it to. The original light/shadow jewel system was simple but clear, in this game (and Deadly Shadows) your body just makes you feel clumsy and awkward. You're still using a keyboard and mouse after all and can't actually control your in-game body, so it just feels like you're carrying a log through the whole game.

The 4th game is really out of pace with the franchise, it doesn't sound like Thief at all. In all Thief games sound was very important to spot enemies, in this game sound was almost irrelevant. The level design is full of prompts, the scourge of modern games. The take downs are with prompts also, don't require precision. Also it's simplistic and linear, while the original had complex level design which we could approach in many ways. I didn't even starte talking about the story, which is ridiculous. We fight a cartoonish one dimensional villain, that the game tries really hard to convey to us how evil he is. The guy has a wooden leg, but often can sneak up on Garrett, the -master thief-. We follow the tiresome and repetitive -save the girl- trope here, while I remember how ambiguous there characters were in previous games, including Garret. Thief 4 was quite a disappointment, and should have been named something else. This review is too lenient.

I dont get fps games, seriously i dont! Like, what's the point of creating a genre that has the very specific objective of generating an immersive experience, when in reality it can't /won't do that? Do you see the world like in fps games? No you don't, do you behave/react like you would do in these games? You most certainly don't. And please don't bring arguments like you don't see the world like in real life in a fps, because it would ruin the experience and bla bla bla because it only goes to fuel MY topic on how frustrating and pointless fps games have been until now; what's the point then? Are you a masochist? Do you enjoy turning around at a quarter of the speed that you reach in real life? And pay attention to what i said before, that fps games have been like this, until now! What i mean by that is, i know developers CAN create an experience close to, real life interaction in fp view, my point is to why don't they do that, then!

I was very excited for this game. Excited is actually an understatement, I really can't put it into words how excited I was. To my disappointment I got this game and was not impressed. It's not awful, but it's just not good. This game takes no skill and there is no replay value whatsoever. It feels way to linear and the mechanics are just AWFUL. I feel more like I'm playing through an animated movie than a game. You go through the game holding down the left trigger to do everything from climb a wall to just running while entering focus mode every now and again, you use the left trigger for everything. I really tried getting over not being able to jump, but I just couldn't get over it. Honestly, if your a hard core stealth gamer and you love games like metal gear solid, than I urge you TO NOT BUY THIS GAME OR EVEN RENT IT. A 6 year old could easily beat this game.

I was just thinking. A game like this. Didn't do well at launch, so most of its reviews reflect that. However how many reviews take place a year or so after the games release. Maybe by then it's been patched to be a better experience. To become the game everyone was hoping it would be. I know a few times you revisit a game. I suppose it's not possible to do that with every game because that's essentially doubling the amount of videos you upload. Extra time and work. If I was you, I would just wait a year after the game came out and then do a video on it. I would be late to the party but I feel the review would be more honest about what the game is and how it plays because at that point it's going to stay the same. These are just my thoughts anyway, if you've read this much then thank you kindly for taking the time to listen: P

I saw your review on the Thief: The Dark Project and I was so envious because I don't have a set up to be able to play it. Then I watched this and thought well i'll just try this on the console because I LOVE stealth games. I like really taking my time and painstakingly planning a way to avoid any confrontation. I'm glad I watched this review because I picked up the game and loved it. I happened to look at other reviews later on and people really hated it (They had justifiable reasons, i'm just glad I played it before reading all the negative stuff) I don't know what i'm getting at here? I'm just rambling, but the gist is you are one of the few that make reviews that I take seriously because you are always fair and point out the good with the bad. I've said this before, but dammit man. you are the best.

I played Thief 3 in my childhood and maybe after decade saw this in store. I bought it and knew it was a good game. I tried it, graphics were really bad (X360 version, framerate had lots of issues, but overall beside these and some other quirks this game feels like title says. Sometimes mysterious and magical, sometimes just pocket-picking boredom, but overall I think it just lives up. To me it was a rare game to actually make me totally want to play it no matter what quirks it has. I think same studio as Thief's made Sleeping Dogs, which is one of the best games I have every tried. Thief 4 is really great for some people. The key is to just forget the past and just play it in dark room, while sitting on sofa. That's the only one truly immersive way to play it.
