Some called it SimEverything, others called it SimLetdown. Spore was quite the divisive game when it was released, but how does it hold up today? Time for a detailed look at it!

The 2005 GDC demo from Will Wright was both the worst and best video game demonstration of all time. It turned out to be far more scripted than Will Wright let on, and it ended up hyping people to extreme levels over a product that couldn't ever hope to deliver on its promises. But man, at the time I didn't know a single person who watched that demonstration and wasn't blown away. A part of the magic was because it happened during a mundane presentation where no game was scheduled to be announced. But then Will Wright came on stage and showed off the most epic game concept ever conceived. I remember having my mind blown every single time the camera zoomed out and the scope expanded. Games were getting pretty complex by 2005, but not THAT complex!
I managed to put aside my hype and manage my expectations enough prior to release to enjoy a playthrough or two, but the novelty wore off quickly and I never touched it again after that.

I remember hearing flutters about all the extensive genetic things you can do, but I was 10, I didn-t give it much thought, I was encaptured by the creation and management, and like most found the space stage the BEST part of the game, but it always had this feeling it was. not finished. Like this wasn-t all of it.
Playing again years later, I learn those feelings were true, and I learn that it could have been just. so much more.
There-s no denying Spores- current status and replayability, it-s place in the gamer zeitgeist, but I can-t help but shy away from celebrating it, remorseful over what could have been.
Yeah, Spore is disappointing, not because it-s bad, because it could-ve been so much more.

I discovered Spore as a young child watching my older cousin play it, & absolutely loved it to the point my first two laptops at 13 and 16 had many hours of Spore gameplay on it. It along with my dad watching Star Trek so much while I grew up instilled a love for science fiction and creativity in alien designs in general for me. I even went to the trouble of modding and installing Spore on my ancient Dell laptop at one point when I was 18 before it went kaput. If I had access to a decent Windows computer again I'd totally still play it. If Spore ever received a reboot or remake of some sort I'd be a very happy guy to be honest. It means a lot to me somehow.

I don't really care about the overambitious development. The bad part was that the second half of the game wasn't even worth getting to, to the point where it was more fun to put off progression just to run around, and that the game was insanely broken, to the point where the copy I had was messing with menu bar items outside of the game. How does it even do that? I guess I get that people are disappointed that its not a million billion layers deep like it was promised, but honestly I would have preferred if they would have jumped that ship entirely and given us 1 or 2 stages, instead of desperately trying to meet their promises at the end

I have to give credit to EA though. I lost my original Spore disc and they were nice enough to grant me access through Origin after I sent them a picture of the box with serial number intact. Yeah they were DRM-obsessed but they were nice enough to help me out.
I always thought the game was pretty cool, but it definitely didn't live up to the hype. It would be an awesome foundation to expand upon but it does leave much to be desired as-is. I do have to give credit to the Cell Stage though. It can be quite entertaining if you play for a few levels and keep mixing your creature up.

Have you heard of Thrive, LGR? It aims to do what spore couldn-t: Create a wife scoped scientifically accurate evolution game. It-s still under development by an Indie game studio called Revolutionary games. I-m not a member, but I think you should know about it. That said, I have found that thinking of Spore-s gameplay as a way to create a backstory for your species and use the descriptions of them, and any creations related to them to flesh them out really helps with the enjoyment of the game for me, in all the stages.

First time I played was when my dad bought it and installed it on his POS machine. It ran at like 10 fps on ultra low settings but I remember begging to play on the computer constantly because I loved the game so much. After moving out, I bought it on Steam and can now play it at a perfect frame rate at max settings(not really a feat today but compared to how I first played, it's night and day. I still start up a new planet every so often to dick around from cell to civilization.

I prefered the cell and creature modes and i wanted to stick to them. I didnt like the strategy part of the game.
In my opinion Space took 70% of the game which was the main reason i didnt like this game. It is like they didnt know what game they are doing.
They should give us option to stay in the modes - i wanted to become bigger monster etc. Of course the best part of the game is the customization. Making Monsters was amazing i spent hours on the creator alone.

As someone with an Avali sona, it's interesting to rewatch this review after joining the very phantom as the evali species originated in Spore as a creation with the Creator of the species even creating a mission pack for the galactic adventures expansion called whom God's destroy iirc. I really should sit down and play this game at some point because it seems really interesting

I didn't see or hear any of the advertisements about this game. I bought it after a friend had said that they really enjoyed playing it. I absolutely love the game and everyone I showed it to bought a copy and loved it as well.
I played games such as Sims and SimCity as well as Black & White 1 and 2. All great games.
