LGR - The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard Review

Rating: 4.0; Vote: 1
The lone action/adventure Elder Scrolls game that eschews role-playing in favor of. slow controls and clunky combat. Eh. it's not completely awful, but there's a reason it's a forgotten entry in the franchise. - Find the game on GOG right here

Just watching this review really makes me want to play Oblivion again.
I just started the actual story by beating the first gate but I already had a butt load of time in the game.
Unfortunately, one day I started to play and -Blockhead- was written all over NPC's faves. I know what it means because I have about 50+ mods/add-ons installed but to find out what happened and what add-on to move up or down the order or even just modify the values.
It's going to be a headache just like it was just to get all the add-ons working properly. .So I stopped playing it and haven't touched it since. Waiting for the chosen one's file modding.
Soon my precious, soon.
Plus I'm on the fence about continuing or just waiting till I get a better rig so the game looks proper better. I've seen videos and while I don't think I'll ever have the ideal powerful rig, the one I'm using now is not a gaming rig so I don't have the full lush forest I would absolutely love.
If you've made it this far, here. - - -
. you deserve it.
If you just scrolled down then DAMN YOU! The Dark Brotherhood will be paying you a visit.

Way too harsh, imo. The only thing about this game that truly sucks is the combat. The voice acting (with the exception of the rare outliers that you obviously selectively showed--and they truly are awful, I agree) is decent, as is the writing that goes behind it. The story and world design is similarly compelling. And the latest version of the GoG installation (as of 2019) runs perfectly on a modern system, complete with the glide graphics you may remember and love (or not. People who get impatient at excessive text or story should avoid this, for sure. Otherwise give it a try. I happen to think it has aged even better than Morrowind.

I never understood why people hated on Redguard for not being an RPG. Bois, it's a _spinoff. _ It never wanted to be an RPG. It always wanted to be an action adventure - and Redguard does this job quite well imho. Sure, the performance is just terrible and the combat. Let's just say that I didn't know you could parry until the third dungeon and that even knowing this just made a slight difference.
But other than that this game was absolutely amazing. The world, the dialouges, the story, the lore, the Dungeons, the puzzles, Cyrus' attitude, etc. I loved playing Redguard.

-This game definitely doesn't feel like other Elder Scrolls games.
Like, you're playing the game and going through the story and then the game gives you a mission and is all -Also, go to Clavicus Vile's realm- and you're playing along, -Okay, go to Clavicus Vi- CLAVICUS VILE? What's he doing here? - And then you remember you're playing an Elder Scrolls game and not a shoddy Price of Persia knock-off. (Okay, it _is_ a shoddy Prince of Persia knock-off, but it's _also_ an Elder Scrolls game)-
-paraphrased quote from my friend discussing this game.

I loved Redguard and it is bringing back lots of memory. I bought my Dutch box after I enjoyed a bit of Daggerfall and wanted to experience it more. This is far better than the other games, because you can run through the world yourself and no worries about strength and other settings. obviously LGR doesn-t like Redguard, but you must not compare it with modern techniques.
Finally I want that US box too, the Dutch/European version doesn-t have much extras.

You should try Gothic sometime. It's much better gameplaywise than vast majority of Bethesda's TES games especeially Morrowind and all prior(and it came out over a year before Morrowind, if you will like it i recommend Gothic II aswell, expansion less if you menage to get it(Steam versions have it only with the expansion preinstalled and it changes difficulty for quite a bit harder and has new content enabled permanetly)

The way I look at Redguard is that it's simply the beta for Morrowind. And your right. They were trying something new. It's not always going to go right. But it's an important part of gaming history. Doesn't give it a free pass for being clunky AF. But should be respected for what it stands for. As well as what it helped forge (no pun I promise. Morrowind STILL has an active player / miss community after all these years.

This seems easier to wrap my head around than Daggerfall with it's procedurally generated nonsense dungeons and traipsing all over Hammerfell for EVERY SINGLE quest. I've not played Redguard yet but I watched the first couple of hours and the dialog was well written and interesting. Can't say I was impressed with the janky combat however. Fortunately there isn't too much of that.

This was one of the games I played a lot when I was growing up. I managed to finish the whole thing, but I remember it was glitchy because at random times I would be walking and would just sink through the ground and fall into darkness until I hit the bottom and died. I remember loving the soundtrack, and you could pop the game CD into your CD player and listen to each track.

i remember installing it, enduring through the intro. and quiting/uninstaling 5 minutes after i realized how horrible the controls were. i want to know what reviewer was quoted by saying -simply breathtaking- for this, even at the time this was considered trash. then i would like to track down that reviewer, and beat the shit out of him in public.
