major 2 con's. MUSIC SUCK and almost anyone can do FM synth from creative to gravis. gravis sound better during the time but like creative have both competing is MIDI OPTIONS. while it died down during windows 95 graphical revolution came about. its Aureal3d came about then creative go crazy next with EAX stuff for next decade until other player came to market is TurtleBeach with its CIRRUS LOGIC CHIPS HRTF while CMEDIA did its version with C3D Xear. that last about when MICROSOFT had enough of Dsound abuse with issues like money scams from companies who took advantage to confuse the users when time sound cards flood in the markets with prices like 100 dollars and above. they just rewrote entire sound stack for VISTA. now everyone from creative starting to panic that realtek now able to emulate all 3d sound stuff. also did improve cmedia since its based on software while creative just got caught with their pants down when that happen. for a3d and cirrus logic? creative just murder them during peak until cmedia caught them surprise later on

That nice looking sound card has got me thinking. It would be cool to have full new motherboards running an open BIOS and a slower x86-compatible CPU that could be installed in a modern ATX or ITX case configuration. It would alleviate the need to invest in aging PC hardware to get that hardware retro PC experience. Pair that with new retro-style cases, another genius idea someone should implement post haste, and the experience would be complete. Don't forget the new clicky retro style mechanical keyboard, retro style mouse and, of course, 4: 3 retro style display. I'm thinking an LCD panel in a beige frame with the right accents would do nicely.

There actually is an option to use a stand-alone OPL3, but it only presents in games that are aware of that standalone OPL3 options. This option is usually called 'Generic OPL3' or 'Windows Sound System' (sometimes Microsoft Sound System. It is present in plenty of games. Earlier games which are not yet aware of standalone OPL3 soundcards sometimes may be tricked by shoving them a different driver, but it has very little sense, as in most cases the soundtracks were written for OPL2 chips and won't use any additional OPL3 capabilities, even if we shove an OPL3 driver instead of OPL2 one.

I had no idea that making brand new ISA cards was even a thing. My first question was who has ISA slots these days, but then after being informed that it's made for the retro scene, well color me impressed. There will be always a special place in my heart for my Sound Blaster AWE64 Gold, that had RCA outputs for sound instead of the standard jack, back in the day and held onto it as long as I could. Knowing there might be, or at least someone is trying to create, a market like this hit me right in the nostalgia.

Hmm, here is something I do not understand. Why in 2018 is there not a PCI or PCIe version of such cards? For modern computers ya know? For those of us that can't afford to find an old PC that actually still works lol! I myself am seeking a FM synthesizer based sound card that can be edited like a DX7 or FB01 but already on a computer like has been done with SID Chip based sound cards and usb modules, err, before they were all discontinued!

It's a great thing that we get new retro hardware, but I don't get it why Adlib is getting so much love. Back in the day it was obsolete very quickly by the Sound Blaster and even if it's great to have high quality OPL music in games, without SB there's no sound effects.
I would rather see a card that has OPL3, SB compatibility and support for GUS. It would be great, since getting GUS isn't that easy.

Now that this is a thing, is there any homebrew SB16 clone? Those things are getting more expensive and rare by the day and all of them had different problems like hanging notes on the MPU-401, noisy output, distortion with some games, etc. I've seen daughterboards, AdLib clones, LPT port contraptions, but I've never seen a full fledged SB16 clone and I think it's the one thing that needs to be done.

First off, this thing is amazing, even is the surround IS pretty useless at the moment.
So, I figure this is as good a place as any to ask. I'm interested in a doing a from-the-case Windows 98 PC build, but vintage systems and parts, at least around where I live, are difficult to find. Is anyone reputable making retroclone hardware, or am I stuck trying to source original parts?

The Windows driver only really takes advantage of the stereo output and maybe an extra voice or two when using an OPL3 driver, the -instruments- are exactly the same as the OPL2 driver. One good thing is the Voyetra SuperSAPI! driver with its 4-op patches should work without a problem on this card. That driver doesn't appear to do any hardware checks, it just writes to port 0x388h.

The issue is this card has no mixer chip, often something like CT1335, 1345 or 1745. And most games and programs on DOS expect it to be there. Also a lot of games use the DSP (the main SB chip) to be there for detection of the card type, and without it, it is kind of tricky.
