These lines next to very bright areas are due to a relatively low charge transfer efficiency in the CCD.
When the CCD is exposed to light, charges are set free by the photoelectric effect (that's what Einstein got his nobel prize for. Now when it's time to -grab- the picture from the CCD, all the charges are transfered line by line towards one side where the readout happens, e. g. where an amplifier measures how much charges are there per pixel (line by line) in order to create to image.
When some pixels are very exposed and therefore very -full of charges-, some charges are left behind (therefor -low charge transfer efficiency-. When now the next and next and next lines of charges/lines of pixels are shifted through when the CCD is read out line by line, these left-behind charges are partially adding up to the actual charges of the new line, passing by the over-exposed spot. Therefore more charges are read out for these consequent lines and you get a bright line. :)

I remember those vertical streaks as a distinctive CCD thing. I even recognized them in Tron: Legacy which had its live action footage shot with Sony F35 cameras and Phantom HD right before pretty much all digital cameras switched from straight RGB patterned CCD's to Bayer Pattern CMOS chip sensors. It was simply a funny little quirk they had. I'm honestly surprised no manufacturer built a camera with the CCD rotated 90 degrees and called the resulting horizontal streaks -cinematic-.

Everytime I hear the name Mitsubishi, I have to remember that it's much bigger than you'd expect it to be, ranging in several markets. I'm actually surprised they delved into cameras.
Too bad their car manufacturing branch is pretty much run by Nissan (33% stake in the company, making it part of the Renault-Nissan Alliance) and is likely going to just sell nothing but fun sucking crossovers.

ah yes back when things were still made in japan and not china. As a kid my folks had me convinced Japanese things werent as good as USA made and that since mitsubishi made things besides cars the cars were junk. Love my mitsubish mirage, we have a mini split ac in our house in mexico and this looks like a neat camera back in the day

I love retro tech, but wow are these pictures awful. Definitely would not have been worth to have a digital camera then. I remember they exploded around 2002-2003 and by then could actually take decent photos. Every guy in my high school had one around their neck. A few years later phone cameras made them extinct.

That green line thing is when the sensor elements (pixels) over saturate and the electrons bleed over into the adjacent elements in that row and if strong enough or crap enough sensor it continues along the entire row.
As for why it's green, maybe the sensor is most sensitive to that wavelength.

I had the UMAX branded one, worked with a 20MB Sandisk card. Mine came with a 4MB card. I think it was exactly 20 years ago at an auction for an equivalent of 50 euro. Still have the cards and the PCMCIA converter but the camera. Don't know, I forgot I had one until I saw this LGR thing. :)

Waaay late on this, but is Clint aware that professional photographer Nan Goldin absolutely loved this camera? She used to give this camera to subjects because she loved the aesthetics of its images so much. Larry Clark has also expressed weird fondness for it.

In a way, Mitsubishi is still a major player in digital cameras -- Nikon is one of the members of the Mitsubishi Group which is. sort of a gentleman's agreement to work together and help each other out while skirting antitrust laws?

I remember well the UMAX cameras. That Mitsubishi camera was sold in Europe as UMAX. I had in 1997 a very good UMAX scanner.
Scanners could deliver better quality of photos than early very expensive compact digital cameras.
