4: 35 Seen that thing before in a group home for disabled children in the mid-late 2000's, it was called a -Springboard- and the non-verbal children would use it to communicate, before iPads became available enough for group homes to adopt those. I remember one of the children at the group home had a compulsion to say he wanted whatever he decided he was going to eat off his plate before eating, so it'd go like this:
[has special juice with vitamins and stuff because he was a very picky eater]
[taps button]
I
[taps another button]
WANT
[taps another button]
DRINK
[drinks juice]
I imitated the voice a few times and once jokingly hit -Apple- over and over again.
APPLE. APPLE. APPLE. APPLE.
The non-verbal user of the Springboard was amused by me screwing with the device and started repeatedly hitting APPLE to show his amusement.

It sounded eerily familiar, I couldn't place it until I heard it go EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE and instantly I recognized that warm voice and the times it told me I couldn't order pizza because I happened to be John Madden.
I wonder what Dennis would think if he knew his speech synthesis process would go on to be immortalized in the minds of people around the world through the statement of vowels.

Related to his comment on the woodgrain 486. I don't know how, but I made ribbon cables look organized. I only installed IDE and floppy drives, but it was like origami. This was 2 weeks ago. I was building a brand new system with an Athlon 64, floppy drive, Windows 10/Ubuntu 18. 04 LTS dualboot, and a couple VMs. It was my dream PC but it was a mess inside.

I have a soft spot for DEC. In the 90's I was doing 3D animation using lightwave. One day a company came to me and asked for an animation, I said yes as usual and they told me theyd send me a DEC Alpha to speed up rendering time. Not only that, I was allowed to keep it after doing the animation. My friends were obviously jealous. Loved that machine.

-I wonder what historical and technological connections the DECtalk DTC-01 might have had to the Texas Instruments 'Speak & Spell', first issued in 1978. For its time, and especially in a product designed for, and marketed to, young children, and inexpensive enough to be affordable for many parents, it was truly an amazing device. -

This reminds me of the Acorn Speech System we used back in school on the venerable BBC Micro. We were supposed to use it to help with German pronunciation, but in reality it was mostly used to say naughty words when the teacher wasn't around.

I wonder if there is any good reason why they didn't set the singing commands to A=440Hz, the international standard tuning system. Seems a weird decision which must have frustrated many budding electronica artists back in the day!

Hearing the DECtalk read out the things for Jaws made me think how interesting it-d be if some of the text only adventure games such as Zork had a narrator reading everything out (a real person, not text to speech.

I bet so many people thought the dec talk pc was Stephen Hawking's voice that they used it when having him be in their show without actually having him unlike Futurama and Star trek where he actually cameos
