Emma Stone Clearly Hated Jimmy Kimmel's Joke And So Did Twitter

At the 2024 Oscars, Emma Stone, who won Best Actress for "Poor Things," was irritated when host Jimmy Kimmel made a joke about the film's controversial sex scenes during the Best Picture montage. Stone appeared to call Kimmel a "prick," but later enjoyed her award win. Viewers, including Donald Trump, criticized Kimmel's performance, with some taking issue with his "Poor Things" joke and others finding it unfunny. Kimmel also received backlash for a joke about Holocaust dramas and a comment about the failed film "Madame Web." Robert Downey Jr. was the subject of a questionable joke about his past drug addiction. Emma Stone may have taken home an Oscar for her role in Poor Things, but not everything about the awards ceremony was perfect. Here's why Stone called the show's host Jimmy Kimmel a nasty word after one of his jokes. When Jimmy Kimmel hosted the 2024 Academy Awards on March 10, his comments about Poor Things drew the ire of Emma Stone. The moment occurred during the montage for the Best Picture nominees, with the comedian quipping that it featured the only scenes from the movie they were allowed to show. This was a reference to Poor Things' controversial sex scenes, and the film's lead star seemed visibly annoyed at the host. After Kimmel made the joke, the camera cut to an unhappy Stone, shaking her head and appearing to bad-mouth the late-night comedian. The camera didn't pick up her words, but it looked like she called him a nasty name. However, the host's comments didn't sour Stone's overall experience, as she was emotional and elated after winning the Best Actress award later on. Given that Emma Stone has defended the sex scenes in Poor Things, it's understandable why she wasn't a fan of Kimmel's joke. She wasn't in the minority either, as plenty of social media users took to various platforms to criticize Kimmel's performance, including former President Donald Trump. "You are a rude, terrible person," Trump wrote. But Trump wasn't the only person who used social media to lambast Kimmel's jokes at this year's Oscars. Some viewers felt that his comments about Poor Things overlooked what the film is really about, and his attempt at humor didn't land the way he probably intended it to. Other users were more blunt in criticizing Kimmel, with some wishing he didn't host the ceremony. "I don't blame Emma Stone at all. I think Jimmy Kimmel should be sacrificed in her place," one user wrote. Of course, others on social media found Stone's reaction entertaining, though they seemingly agreed with the sentiment that Kimmel's jokes were questionable. Another user commented, "I really enjoyed that shot of Emma Stone being completely over Jimmy Kimmel's shtick." But the comedian's wisecrack about the sex scenes in Poor Things wasn't his only attempt at humor to fall flat. Kimmel's Oscar monologue also featured a cringy joke about Robert Downey Jr. He mentioned that Downey's best supporting actor nomination for Oppenheimer was one of the highest points of the actor's career, a reference to Downey's past drug addictions. Many found the bit in poor taste and criticized Kimmel for dragging it out. In a review of the 2024 Oscars broadcast for The Hollywood Reporter, Daniel Fienberg noted, "it seemed to go on forever." Meanwhile, IndieWire writer Ben Travers said, "it would have been more productive to allude to Downey's many successes." Travers added that Kimmel should have known better, while crediting Downey for being a good sport. Another joke that rubbed people the wrong way was Kimmel's comment about Holocaust dramas being rom-coms in Germany. The joke was directed toward Sandra Hüller, who starred in The Zone of Interest, which takes place during the Holocaust. In the Chicago Sun-Times, Richard Roeper said, "it fluttered and fell to the ground awkwardly." Those watching at home agreed with the critic. One user considered Kimmel's line to be a "swing and a miss." People were also upset over Kimmel's jabs at the infamous box office bomb Madame Web. USA Today critic Kelly Lawler said they were "half-hearted," while Roeper noted that the joke was met with a tepid response.

I would normally side with whoever is against j. kimmel, but this time i am with him: emma stone is ridiculous in thinking that her devotion to her craft is enough to sublimate a material that people interpret for what it tells them, not for the good intentions that went into it. And in this case, it might legitimately provoke the reaction j. k. speaks of

This should clearly prove that no one was being racist at the golden globe awards when they didn't laugh at the host's jokes. Just not funny, period. Kimmel is white and has high status, but still deemed a missed too, so just shut up about this snowflake racism crap.

Haven't watched the Oscars for years but from everything I've heard and read about Kimmel's job hosting it, it seems like he tried and utterly failed to pull off the kind of roasting that Ricky Gervais is the master of.
reply

He did a great job hosting the Oscars Emma Stone's can't handle his jokes she needs to quit acting cuz she's a horrible actor anyways in the movie she was in was 100% garbage and never should have been made
reply

Kimmel ain’t funny anymore. He is part of the decline of late night shows, remember he has been there 3 times and last 3 shows have had a decline in viewership, wonder why (besides the show itself)
reply

I think something thats a bit overlooked is the fact that there are writers for this jokes they are just the mouth piece i do agree the jokes were shit but also he doesn't hold the full blame
reply

You can't joke about that, I'm offended! LOL, people need to get over themselves, pretty sure Jimmy's job was to roast people and movies, shame everyone has such thin skin.
reply

emma stone isnt pretty. Jimmy Kimmel isnt funny. RDJ and Emma Stone are fantastic actors and will continue on. Jimmy will lose his job in about a year and be forgotten.
reply

He takes cheap shots like someone who wasn't at one point a fatass. He should go back to The Man Show. and yes, I know it's not on the air anymore. That's kinda the point.
reply

Jimmy Kimmel has worn Blackface impersonationg NBA legend Karl Malone and has always enjoyed degrading women I'm surprised that he's even allowed a late night show TBH.
reply

At least she didn't go up on stage and slap him. To all those snowflakes, whining about Jimmy Kimmel's jokes, are you naive to think he wrote those jokes himself
reply

Jimmy Kimmel as a performer is a shtick that's severely worn out its welcome. There's being funny and then there's thinking you're funny when you're not.
reply

Bro it was funny people need to calm down. Robert’s on the other hand was not funny at all because it was about a very clear personal struggle of his.
reply

How's this for a 'sarcastic' solution to those who can't take a joke. NO COMEDIC HOST FOR THE OSCARS! Just one damn boring show where people get awards.
reply

There's only one Ricky Gervais and he's not called Kimmel.
There are (too) many woke self-proclaimed comedians and they could ALL be called Kimmel!

reply

You can’t ecpect anything actually clever from Jimmy Kimmel
Should probably hire a talented comedian, next time, if they want actually funny

reply

But another shitty ass comedian can take the world stage to make fun of a woman’s health condition, and then cries about it when slapped for it.
reply

There's a thin line between a joke and an insult and if you're gonna do insult comedy you gotta be ready for a joke to not hit the way you want.
reply

Remember when Jimmy Kimmel hosted the Man Show Celebrating toxic masculinity and the exploitation of women Yeah, he’s still an asshole
