The Robert Downey Jr Oscars Joke Was Beyond Cringey

How did one joke derail Jimmy Kimmel's monologue just minutes after the Oscars started It's a pretty low blow to call someone out for ancient history. Hey Ricky Gervais rocked the hell out of Globes back then with these jokes. You have a crowd of, yes very talented, deserving and unique individuals, but also extremely wealthy and successful. As if we should protect them. They should be able to take some hits. RDJ is a mortal human being with his weaknesses, but at the end he is sitting there as a testament to his strength. I see a small joke that reminds him of the weakness he overcame as a reminder of the path he went through

You know, I noticed that Jimmy Kimmel and Robert Downey Jr. when he goes on the show, he’s not with the same chemistry and jokes that Jimmy Kimmel is. Honestly I can tell these two don’t like each other, but they’re acquaintances, but even though I like Jimmy Kimmel, who should probably retire from late night shows now this has been. I do feel like he did go a little bit too far and then he tried to fix the joke by rambling on, but made it worse. Robert Downey Junior is a great actor and the deserves more respecthe’s s past is the past.

Ricky Gervais made way worse comments to loads of people including Mel Gibson for example. RDJ has a past and he has to live with it. I'm glad he's turned his life around, he's a great actor, but take one on the chin man. Don't walk away from your past, own up to it. You're an example of how you can turn things around that should be praised. Oh and yes Kimmel isn't funny and boring. Get a real comedian who writes his own jokes and isn't afraid to get cancelled.

Mr. Kimmel will stand on top of his soapbox and yell at the four winds that addiction is a disease. Then go into hosting an event that is considered a celebration of film and cinema and makes fun of someone else’s disease. There is a moment and a time for every thing. And this was certainly not the time for those comments.

Kimmel has always been a chince.
He reminds me of that one kid in Jr high school that was always peeling the scabs off of colorless conversations. Like embarrassing others was the panicle of success and the only way to gain attention for himself.

Robert Downey jnr was a mess for years. He should wear it. Got everyone have become humourless zombies incapable of laughing at themselves. And yes, substance abuse is serious. That doesn’t mean we can’t laugh about it.

After what happened with Chris rock and Will smith last time why didn’t anyone stop Jimmy once he started talking about RBJ’s past He should have just talked about Oppenheimer and Marvel then compare them to winning an Oscar.
reply

RIcky Gervais can get away with stuff like that since he's never been too friendly talking about Hollywood.
Jimmy Kimmel feeds from the teat of Hollywood for his career to survive.
Idiot bit the hand that feeds.

JK obviously doesn't realize what it takes to make real life change for the better, perhaps one day down the line someone can talk about how much of an a$$hole Jimmy used to be. That's IF he ever stops being one.
reply

His addiction was his past. It harmed rdj and his cwreer, not bother people. He has learned and grown from it.
Yet no one brings up other members of the Avengers cast who are still in the addiction circle

This is really bad. Really bad. I understand people's reaction. Robert took it with grace. It's good Robert walked off the interview. He overcame so much. It's great he got Oscar. That shows to Kimmel. Well done Robert!

I'm disappointed to hear this. Jimmy should know better. I don't watch the awards show, but I gotta believe embarrassing someone can't be funny. Also, Jimmy has hosted the show a few times. He should know better.

The man over came one of his biggest monsters of the past to become a superstar, we should be celebrating this not repeatingly bringing it up. Its clearly a big wound for him and it should be treated as such.

Big name comedians have long stopped being funny and spend most of their time being political commentators. I find small and upcoming comedians more truth to the craft. Kimmel can only do low brow stuff now
reply

Robert Downey did confirm later that the jokes were pre-approved. I still think in poor taste, but at least Downey knew they were coming and I guess it’s his way of facing it.
reply

Downey's story not one to mock but to honor. Man who went to lowest of lows. Went to jail. Got himself clean and had a second career after it. It's story of redemption
reply

Yeah, that joke was a little bit too far. But RDJ really deserved the Oscar for the first time in his career. Jimmy wasn’t mind being offended with the addiction joke.
reply

Its not really a good joke to mock someone unless they find it funny, because then you become the guy who thoufht it was funny to mock someone's trauma/painfuk past.
reply

People expect so much from a guy who used to host a show called the man show so it befuddles me when people are surprised when he does anything outside of what is PC
reply

Well this is just another example of Americans picking the wrong people for the job! We Americans have been always known for picking bad leaders
