Why Twitter Thinks RDJ's Oscars Acceptance Was Racist

Robert Downey Jr. is no stranger to controversy, but his latest dust-up involves something he forgot to do while accepting his Oscar. The 2024 Oscars were a big night for many, especially Robert Downey Jr. His Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor was a big deal, making him the first former Saturday Night Live cast member to take home such an award. He also garnered some sympathy during the evening after host Jimmy Kimmel made a cringeworthy joke at his expense. While referring to the Oppenheimer actor's past history of substance abuse, Kimmel joked, "This is the highest point of Robert Downey Jr.'s career, well, one of the highest points. I was surprised to admit that when I was locked down in a California correctional facility, I said, 'Wow, this is really not panning out for me.' But only a couple of days after the ceremony, many online began to accuse Downey of racism. One user uploaded a video of Downey going up onstage to accept his trophy, which was presented by five previous Best Supporting Actor winners, including last year's winner, Ke Huy Quan. The user wrote, "Robert Downey Jr. ignored Ke Huy Quan at the Oscars 2024. I don't know if this was unintentional or not. It was not cool at all." While Quan held the Oscar in the video, Downey took the statue from him without shaking his hand or seemingly acknowledging him in any significant way. However, he does shake hands with Tim Robbins and fist-bumps Sam Rockwell, both of whom are white. Many on the site criticized Downey Jr., including another user who wrote, "This is called unconscious bias, and it's very much a form of racism. RDJ is not being directly racist, but he absolutely didn't see the Asian man that literally handed him his award while acknowledging every other white male in the vicinity." While Robert Downey Jr.'s action could be seen as insensitive, is it a stretch to call it racist? Photos later emerged from that evening of Downey and Quan shaking hands backstage. There was even a group shot of Downey posing with the five presenters, with his arm around Quan. Others on the site seem to think the whole controversy doesn't hold merit. For instance, another person wrote, "Seeing some unironic Robert Downey Jr. is obviously a racist a-hole who should go to hell tweets because he didn't make eye contact with Ke Huy Quan, and I swear to god, all of you need to chill out." Then again, the whole discussion is bringing to mind another unfortunate incident concerning Downey. In 2015, the actor was asked by The Guardian about director Alejandro González Iñárritu calling superhero movies a form of cultural genocide. The Iron Man star answered, "For a man whose native tongue is Spanish to be able to put together a phrase like cultural genocide just speaks to how bright he is." That statement, combined with Downey appearing to snub Quan, has led to many derisive remarks on social media. The question remains, did Downey intentionally ignore Quan? Taylor Swift made headlines earlier in 2024 when people thought she snubbed Celine Dion, who presented her with an award at the Grammys. Award shows can be chaotic, so perhaps Downey was just so overwhelmed he didn't think to shake Quan's hand. Regardless, the site is the place where people tend to try and discover hidden meaning behind some innocuous action, and it's also the place where people love to chop other people down. Robert Downey Jr. receiving his highest honor seems to be the latest victim of some viral trending meme that likely doesn't mean what the algorithm is trying to tell you it means.

This whole story says nothing real about racism. but it says a TON about people in modern society who seek to gain attention by destroying other people's lives by creating false controversies. The X-poster who created this controversy is morally-bankrupt. It's a simple re-tread of McCarthyism.

Ok we need to stop having this knee jerk reaction and automatically assuming everyone underneath the sun is some sort of prejudice. We keep doing this we won't take it seriously when someone who is actually a bad person show up because we made it trivial

There are plenty of actual racists in America. Focus on them please. RJD is a great actor and he proved that by winning an Oscar for his performance. People need to stop dragging him into unnecessary controversies.

I would have thought that if there were going to be accusations of racism from the evening they would have involved the Best Actress situation. I did not see this coming and it seems like a bit of a reach.

I've never cared what Twatter or X thought. I don't consider it a person. It's a silly little hive mind mob of like minded twits that do not reflect the majority consensus on reality.

Cmon Tweeters. Grow up and get another hobby that is healthier for your mental wellbeing and the wellbeing for all of us by extension. This sort of stuff is just poison.
reply

I would give him the benefit of the doubt. Nobody is prepared for a moment like this. Especially now where they have multiple former Academy Awards winners on stage.

Who care's. It is not racism. It is only racism because you make it racist.
Also, racist in the description and thumbnail gets more click's on videos

reply

If it was a black guy that ignored an Asian or White guy, those Twitter twatss would not be calling it racist.
So pathetic.

reply

Oh brother. some people need to just take a moment. and breath. not make a mountain out of a molehill or nothing at all.
reply

well, let's just be glad he didn't slap the sh! t out of Kimmel during that joke and then went on to take the Award later on
