The Most Expensive Movie Flops In History Xylarxcode: I remember when you would see Lone Ranger posters on pretty much every corner of every street for like a month straight, back in 2013. Out of curiosity I went to the theater to check it out, expecting it to be sold out because it was only its second week in theaters. To my surprise, 90% of the theater room where it played was still available 1 hour before the movie was supposed to start. To me, that felt like a warning sign that I probably shouldn't go see the movie. At least, not in theater. Man of Steel was playing at the same time, so I went to see that instead.

judging a movie by how much money it makes is simply accounting; 13th warrior is a movie I have watched several times and enjoyed every time, something original and well made; john carter is not a perfect film but a very enjoyable one, it did not bomb due to it's quality but rather due to it's lack of star power and the title; sahara is a messy movie, could not quite decide what it wanted to be but it's a fun sundayafternoon popcorn movie; as for the rest, well yeh some pretty bad movies

On Lone Ranger and John Carter; why did no one involved know one damn thing about the characters and why did no one in charge fire the morons after the first million! Seriously, there's a B movie John Carter out there that's better than what Disney put out with a totally miscast Traci Lords no less! And Lone Ranger? That was BAD in every way! I have no experience making movies, but I know both of those characters and could have made twice the movie for half the price!

I thought John Carter was an unfortunate flop, because it was really good. Same with the similar Disney film Prince of Persia. I like Disney's live-action adventure movies like Swiss Family Robinson and 20, 000 Leagues. At least the Pirates movies took off, but I only really like the first of the series, and even that one had a ridiculous battle-opera at the end that nearly ruins the movie. .okay, Lone Ranger. I stand corrected. That movie was miserable.

Some movies listed budget for other things before calling it a loss. I think they just wanted to make sure to get some benefits from losing revenue that year.
Most of the time, we don't want to think of marketing or after-sales, we just want to think of the cost for the movie and the income of the movie ticket sales. This is how we rate many movies, including several movies in this list.
In that case, several of these movies actually did just fine.

The 13th Warrior is actually a really good film. I didn't see it for almost 15 years simply because of all the bad press and box office flop tag on its toe. When I finally sat down and watched it I was gobsmacked at how not awful the film was. Critics and box office don't decide whether or not a film will stand the test of time. They rarely ever get it right. Trust the tale.

Part of the reason for the failure of _John Carter_ was the fact that they mashed together stuff from about 5 different books without ANY SORT OF EXPLANATION. WHATSOEVER. I'm a fan of the books and re-read a bunch of them before the movie, and it was STILL kind of frustrating to follow. I can't imagine what others thought if they never read even one of them.

Poor Eddie Murphy, after Shrek he just got into one crap fest after the other. Pluto Nash, I Spy, A Thousand Words. all crap. As for Mars Needs Moms, my review was Perhaps it does, but we don't need this movie. And I renamed one movie The Moan Ranger. The movies on this list I find the most watchable are Sahara, Stealth, John Carter, and the 13th Warrior.

most of them I have not seen but I liked The lone Ranger because it told some truths about what was really done to us American Indians as we are called and as far i am concerned Jonny Depp did a good job as Tonto I also think Thirteenth warrior is better then people think but I am a history buff and do a lot of reading of it

Hollywood should start taking notes on what low/medium budget movies were successful-and made all costs back and a profit. We don't need any more THE MORTAL ENGINES, SAN ANDREAS, or SKYSCRAPER inflated cost films. The Asylum co. has it figured out, even if not all movies they make are winners.
