I feel a better, and more direct, way to address the very similar but very different dynamic between them would be to compare them to Steve Rogers & Frank Castle. both of who are elite trained Soldiers who have experienced the true horrors of War up close, both have an unwavering sense of Right & Wrong and will firmly plant their feet & stand against any who would challenge their core beliefs, both have lost everyone they have ever loved (ok, Steve eventually got James back, but for decades he didnt even know he was alive ) and would happily lay down their own lives to stop anyone else from ever feeling that pain, both find themselves Strangers in a World that has left them behind. and yet, TOTALLY DIFFERENT MOTIVES & METHODS!

Thanos knows Tony Stark because he foiled to take over a New York. Tony also created The Arc Reactor and this Drew thanos's attention. When the Arc Reactor was created by Tony, Thanos realized the Arc Reactor could extend life in the universe a few millennia. However, ultimately Thanos believed it was not long enough and decided to continue on with his search for the Infinity Stones. He still sees Tony has a serious threat to the universe because of his intelligence not because he fears Tony but because his potential to create could be turned and is just as great of a potential for Destruction he sees him as a loose canon in the universe one who could possibly challenge him if Tony were ever to become that corrupt.

My theory is that thanos knows stark as back in avengers 1, iron man failed him by blowing up his army by missile. And secondly, if u see the origin of thanos, u will come to know that he was very intelligent and knew more than his teachers and books, he kept on exploring and gaining knowledge, so we can say he is a genius, and same with tony, he is a brilliant and genius person, so thats why thanos knows tony and he is like him in knowledge

I thought this was fairly obvious, hardly needing the director's confirmation. Earth took possession of the sceptor, as well as already having the tesseract. Both highly sought after by Thanos. Of course he's gonna know one of Earth's mightiest heroes that was able to defeat his chitari army, it was basically guaranteed Thanos would have to defeat him to get those two stones.

I also see it philosophical that Thanos knows Stark. First Iron Man movie kickstarted marvel universe and all those heroes. Every time I watch marvel movie I always think about what Tony is doing. He is core of MCU, kinda main person there. So Thanos knowing Thony gives This is obvious vibe

Why would he not know. The guy single handled flew through a wormhole with a nuke and destroyed his fleet in the first avengers. I didn't think that needed explaining. I get that Tony stark may not know thanos though. What's strange is that thor, an intergalactic being didn't know of him.

Makes no sense about the knowing tony saving the world based on the you are not the only one cursed with knowledge seems like the connection would be a lot stronger. tony says hes been in his head since New York. seems like a bigger and more significant connection

Something that bothered me was how Dr. Strange asked Tony on the spaceship can you get us home cant he just teleport them back? He seemed like he disagreed with tony about going to Titan. But seemed as if Tony HAD to turn the ship around to get back. Idk
