I saw the movie the first day it came out at an IMAX theater. I liked the movie and thought the acting was excellent. Claire Foy did a great job as well as Gosling. But it's not the kind of movie I would want to see over and over like Apollo 13 or The Right Stuff. You can listen to a story about a family's dying child for only so often before it gets to you.
The action scenes were very good but there seemed to be too much shaking and noise. In fact, it was difficult to hear the conversations of the actors during some of the scenes due to the overuse of noise and camera shake. Also, some of the scenes switched so fast from moment to moment I had difficulty digesting what I just saw. Yeah, I'm older now, but I've been a pilot since I soloed at age 16, so that should have made of for any age-related issues. Meaning the technical stuff in the movie should have been easier for me to understand.
I will watch it again, but only after it comes out for purchase or rental on TV.
But if you do decide to see it, I highly recommend you watch it at an IMAX theater. That's because the director purposely used smaller negative films (super 8) during the early family scenes and graduated to larger format film for the action scenes. Eventually, they used IMAX 70mm film during the Lunar Landing scenes. Another go thing was they did not use a lot of Green Screen for special effects. Most of the filming was done in camera. In other words, what you see on the screen actually went through the camera lens. Of course there was post production changes, but they minimized the CGI and I liked that. I hope this helped.

Part of the reason that I don't see films anymore is because my love of movies has diminished and it's because of the politically Democratic Hollywood left who has ruined this for me and all of the politically correct messages they try to cram down ones throat or up your hole. I will not sit in a darkened theater nor pay for a ticket to go and support these actors/actresses/Hollywood types who think that they're better than everybody else once they make it and become rich and successful so they can go off and be their better selves while acting conceited and abuse their good fortune and success while treating the fans like shit. As for Claire Foy, how I now hate her for the simple fact that she said some crappy things about the president when she shouldn't have. absolutely ridiculous, disgusting and desperate. all for the sake of getting movie roles. This is what a lot of Hollywood actress/actors now do. They spout off all this kind of political nonsense/behavior so they can pretend to be down with the cause. I've got better things to do with my hard and carefully earned money in addition to my time. I would never do that to the Queen of England. I like Queen Elizabeth the II. She is a great lady and I would never say anything disrespectful about her or England because of any differences England may have in their country compared to America or our president.

Interesting analogy, but you underplayed the most vital reason. The issue about not showing the planting of the American flag was not drummed up as you stated. I 'm old enough to remember the Apollo program, and though I was only 7 years old in 1969, I remember that the PINNACLE of the entire mission was the planting of the flag. You many not like it. You may agree with the left-wing fascist extremists that America is the source of all evil in the world, but that doesn't make it true.
The successful completion of the lunar landing program was not only the greatest technological achievement of the 20th century (and of all history, it was also the greatest propaganda victory of the Cold War. The Space Race was a competition between two competing ideologies, capitalism and communism. Making a movie about Apollo 11 or about Neil Armstrong without showing the flag being planted on the moon would be like making a movie about the Enola Gay WITHOUT showing the bomb actually being dropped, or a movie about the Civil War without discussing slavery, or a movie about Richard Nixon without mentioning Watergate. This wasn't just a part of the story, IT WAS LITERALLY THE DEFINING MOMENT of the entire event

Armstrong & ALDRIN were on the moon given the film set Aldrin in an awful light ( wrongly - he is a C i know but for selling the same pieces of paper on ebay for 5 grand, im pretty sure the biro one is fake: P ) as a mouthy puts his foot in it dumbass - hes no idiot, its called 1st man as its about armstrong - they planted the flag TOGETHER maybe this was a conflict given aldrins awful representation ( thankfully hes not in many scenes which is odd ) of character. I liked it even though im not a believer the sets are amazing models are 1st class & YES im aware that could be used to fake it on Mars: P Muisc is great too, with that great Poem WHITEYS ON THE MOON worth it for that legendary verse: )

I just watched it on DVD. The film is 70% about his wife and her boring life as a 60s house wife. Any hint of space or NASA or Astronaut stuff is ruined by terrible cinematography, editing and sound. None of the characters are likeable (bizarre as Armstrong is an American hero, partly because they're all mumbling and partly because the dialog is as grey and limp as the set design. The pace of the film is exhausting too - nothing, nothing, nothing and then intense cockpit shot with flashing lights and loud jazz for 2 minutes, followed by morbid wife looking after the children back at home. Zero mention of the space race either. It's easily one of the worst space film I've seen.

The writers and directors of this movie turned one of the greatest adventures in human history into a bore with the exception of the actual landing. This is one of those 'arty' films where everyone spends most of their time staring at each other and the scenery. Smiles are extremely rare and laughs are non- existent. In fact there's so little dialogue it probably only took 30 minutes to write all of it.
The astronauts, their families, and the people working on the program are all portrayed as dull people. If that was reality then artistic license should have been used to indicate otherwise. By far one of the worst historically based movies I have ever seen.

I saw it. I thought it portrayed anything having to do with flight very well. It may have stalled with the drama on the ground and the portrayal if Armstrong as a broken man reeling from the death of his daughter. It cast a huge black cloud on the film. Gosling portrayed Armstrong much like his bland replicant character in Bladerunner and not at all like the Armstrong seen in many interviews here on youtube. Armstrong was an elite test pilot and genius engineer with nerves of steel and a keen intellect- truly the best of us. Now Rami Malek on the other hand hit his take on Freddie Mercuty into the upper decks. Go see that. darlings.

The problems with movies and this guy talking about them just cements it is First Man was not a Ryan Gosling movie it was a movie about Neil Armstrong no matter who was playing him. This guy keeps saying Lady Gaga, Tom Hardy star power and I say shut up and focus on a good story and a good film. First Man was a very good movie while a Star in born is a forth remake and Venom is a kiddi comic book movie. First Man shows us a great story that many of us did not know about a reclusive man who did extraordinary things. Problem is these days it's more about who is in it when seriously Ryan Gosling was Neil Armstrong not Ryan Gosling.

No, its just bad story telling, they made his moody and broody to imply at a hidden depth they just couldn't manage to illustrate, and this extends to the rest of the film where every opportunity to show problems and solutions he was tackling were botched, just a pile of quick cuts and disorientation, the same way a bad fight director does quick cuts to hide the fact that they can't show what is really going on. It was a mediocre film with a forced contrivance of motivation for the guys actions.
