While the staircase scene of him frolicking downward is not only the opposite reflection of the mirror, but a symbol on how broken that mirror is. Ironically, his plummet down the stairs represents a new found sense of empowerment and emancipation that he didn't receive from trying to be the guy whose only crime was to bring laughter to everyone. That broken mirror has not only gave him a clearer image of himself, but a sense of worth as well.
You're either Sisyphus carrying that bolder upward, or you're an eagle swooping down for the kill in a world that wants to kill you. slowly.
This is more than just an out of work comedian having a couple of bad days. This is more than a mere homage to Michael Douglas FALLEN DOWN with clown make-up. This is a man who is literally trying to save his soul in a climate that is soulless and wants him erased and forgotten for the simple reason that he's easy prey.
Its safe to say that the comedian with tears of a clown has become a villain with a grim smile on his face in order to save his own soul. This is mental health validated as a desperate attempt of inner strength and survival and not concocted in self narcissism.

This world is just beyond help at this point. How is that so many people find it odd or disturbing that a grateful son takes care of his elderly and ill mother? Not everyone has the sort of money that alot of people have and take for granted that they can just hire at home care to bathe their mother. Or give her a nice night at home and dance with her to make her happy. People are becoming increasingly detached, selfish and cold. Maybe this world could use some Jokers to help shake things up a bit and get people caring about what matters most once again. Eachother.

This movie is just about the joker to know him and what made him become the joker to his mind and what made him put the make up to go with what happened to his mind and have the life of crime joker that would one day meet batman and the movie is like what made Bruce Wayne became batman and if you take them together but the movie has nothing to do with batman and it is about a man who life makes him become the joker and takes the make up to turn his face to go with his mind that turned him into the joker and gave himself the name joker

This looks incredible. It looks like theyve got a very solid, robust background story with substance and depth for one of the greatest villains of all time. I disagree with the comment in the video about the relationship with his mother appearing to be unhealthy, thats not what I took from it at all. I think it showed a caring son looking after his sick mother. It shows a vulnerability to a character that appears weak and down trodden until one day he snaps! Im very exited to see the film.

It sucks when u say that u have to be smart or a true fan or have an iq over 120 for example to understand some people will understand some people will just miss it u could have a massive fan who has read every comic with a certain character except for 1 and u could have someone who has only read that 1 comic then there could be a reference to that 1 comic and the one that doesn't ever read comics whereas the fan that reads nearly all the comics wouldn't it's often just chance

Although Phoenix is a great actor, I think that these origin story movies have gone down the wrong path. They are showing the villain as a tragic hero, and legitimatizing their later actions. This is a common theme in our real society when the news states that the school shooter did it because he was ABUSED AS A CHILD. This tragic hero villain theme has got to go. Many people have tragedies and abuses in their lives without becoming villains.

There's clear references to Pagliacci here, with the makeup and also the final line It's a comedy is some echo to the opera's last line The comedy is finished! He also kills the most dearest to him in the name of love, so there may be a twist where Arthur may kill his own mother to complete his transformation (or at least not help her when she sees what he's become. Can't wait for this!

In that talkshow presentation, it would seem that he will literally make a nation wide call to boycott Wayne Enterprises. or go full bezerk on another guest. .idk my two cents.

I for one can see this especially for caretaking for a loved one. It takes an incredible toll on your mind. Because in my experience, wanted to believe that I could make my loved one better, but also knowing in the back of my mind that's not possible. When I realized I failed, it dropped me in a dark abyss for a while.
