Halle Bailey Finally Breaks Silence On Little Mermaid Outrage Livia: Halle Bailey is undoubtedly a girl with Disney princess characteristics, she is beautiful, graceful in her gestures and has a beautiful voice.
But better than playing a white character within a plot of white culture would be if she played a black pronoun within a story with elements of black culture. This is as strange as Mulan being played by a white woman instead of a Chinese woman or a Chinese woman playing Pocahontas instead of an indigenous woman or Jasmine being played by a redhead.
yes, I know that mermaids are mythological creatures, but they originated from Greek culture. Ariel is from Scandinavia.
Disney is doing this just to get attention. they are more concerned with making controversy than a good job, and I think it's sad that they are using this young actress to achieve this.
Disney is playing Dirty.
My advice is to have good memories of the classics as they deserve to be and ignore these new versions, do not go to the movies.
Ps: this actress deserves a better film. A film that knows how to value beautiful tales of African culture. This would be a better way of enabling ethnic diversity in the entertainment industry. But I think Disney is too lazy to research great African tales.

The problem with this casting is that it speaks to Disney's inherent racism and laziness. Instead of remaking the live-actions close to their original cartoon, they are putting POC characters in their remakes to demonstrate their inclusion. Yet, the remakes are mere copy's of their original work that was contrived from the backs of mythology, legend, folklore, and literature. Thus, the original Disney film could be viewed as a remake of the original and thus their remake is a remake of a remake. which therein lies the problem. Disney's new princess cartoons have not truly tried to diversify their princess catalog and before you start to shout MOANA at me. Moana is one out of how many? This is hardly an answer to a long-standing critique of Disney's lack of diversity. Plus, correct me if I am wrong, but (currently) Disney does not actively have projects for new Disney princesses. Therefore, their answer to diversity is to put POC characters in their remakes but. not in their original cartoons?

So many people obsess about Ariel having a tan, but the thing I'm worried about is how this will just be another lackluster cash-in remake. In an alternate universe where Disney actually put passion and effort in reimagining their vintage animated classics as live-action remakes, Halle Bailey might give an amazing performance that put her on the same pedestal as Jodi Benson, but in all likelihood, she will become to Jodi Benson what Ema Watson's Belle is to Paige O'Hara Belle and Beyonce's Nala to Moira Kelly's Nala. If she's very lucky, she might pull a Naomi Scott and manage do pull off a strong enough performance to still make some impact within an otherwise lackluster movie.

Oh man! I can really not understand all of this negativity! Halle is beautiful and has an angelic voice! It would have been way more crazy if she tried to get the role of Ariel but could'nt because of the color of her skin! There are black Disney characters like the girl with the frog and Moana. It would be nice to have more of them!
Still Ariel is a great movie and how does is matter if a black woman plays the role of Ariel? People want everyone to be treated equally and then a beautiful black woman gets the role of Ariel and people are freaking out.

I have nothing against the fact that she is African-American, in fact I support it, but they totally ruined Ariels iconic look with the casting. It infuriates me. Halle Bailey totally has the Disney princess voice and look, but it is not that hard to find a woman that looks somewhat like Ariel and can sing and act. Just put a wig on her and voila! Youve got a traditional Ariel with a lot less backlash. Its the same thing with Naomi Scott. Perfect Disney princess. Just not Jasmine, but at least she has SOME Indian descent.

Well if we are going to play this game. Fine! I want Starfire to be casted by an orange person. Let's make Superman Black and black panther white. Why not? skin color or race isn't important as long as the essence is there. Right! Come on. This double standard is ridiculous. Stop handing off characters and MAKE new characters with wonderful stories. That's the key. Everyone will be happy.

expressed disappointment? Oooooh, so much more than that. The bigger than her Is race baiting and she's not that good a singer. Thankfully the hell that is this last year seems to have sunk the film. And it's not about bailey, it's about the attack on our culture. The Racism is in the fact they believe this casting is needed, not in our resistance to it.

So? That girl really work hard and dreams of playing as Ariel. I dont think she doing it for money. Doesnt anyone have dreams of playing someone they like?
In the original Frog Prince, the princess was white then Disney change it to black american. I dont see anyone complaining about it.

reply

Well that's ironic.
If a black character gets whitewashed liberals and the media are shaking and crying
when a white character gets blackwashed it's stunning, brave and helping diversity.
.
Can we just stop this madness and keep characters like they were designed to be?
