Who Was The Better Joker? Ledger Or Phoenix? Caspean: I am so baffled by some fans who were so arrogantly dismissed Joaquin's Joker even before trying to give him a minute of chance. I mean, on what aspect did Heath's Joker was better than Joaquin's?
The suit and the make up? Joaquin's Joker was more accurate to comic book and was the reminisce of Romero's Joker outfit. People were buzzing because Joaquin's Joker didn't has scar on his mouth. Well, the scar idea only came with Heath's Joker and not even accurate to comic books.
The uniqueness? Well, apart from chaos, what did Heath's Joker offered. Absolutely nothing. While Joaquin's Joker could dance which was a nod to Jack Nicholson's. During the ending scene with the therapist, we could see the Joker menacing stare towards the therapist in Joaquin's eyes even without putting the make up, which no other Joker could do.
The laughs? Well, I think almost everybody agree that Joaquin absolutely way better than Heath. Joaquin had pathological laugh, sinister laugh, haunting deep tone laugh (aftermath the Murray killing) and genuine laugh compared to Heath's one dimensioanal laugh, and oh. that fake and forcedfully sound laugh during the mobsters group therapy session.
Brutality? Compare all Joaquin's Joker killing scenes with all of Heath's. That Randall and Murray killing scenes make all Heath's Joker killings especially that cheap pencil trick kill which came out straight from fantasy land looked really childish and cartoonish.
Agent of chaos? Well, Joaquin's Joker achieved what Heath's Joker was trying to do to Gotham all the time without even trying.
Award winning? Heath won Oscar as supporting actor and Joaquin won as the leading actor. Some said Joaquin played Arthur and not Joker but guess what? He played Joker for the final 20 minutes, which was as much as Heath's Joker screen time in Dark Knight. Heath's Joker needed Batman to stay relevant. Joaquin's Joker stands on his own.
So in what aspect did Heath's Joker was so untouchable and can't be matched by Joaquin's like some said? Is it because of the sentimental feeling that he died because of playing Joker role? If so, I rest my case then.

When everyone says Heath Ledger's Joker is the best Joker of all time, no one bats an eye. but as soon as someone says Joaquin is the better Joker. well then everyone looses their minds!
Honestly though. I still like Heath better. Idk. I just can't see the new Joker as THE Joker
And honestly Heath's performance was better because we STILL talk about him to this day. That says something. Phoenix is good. Honestly he is. But Heath is still a legend. Hey maybe he's overrated but for good reason. Heath made us love Joker. and that's technically wrong. We were supposed to be paying attention to Batman. Instead, the first time I watched Dark Knight and every time after all I wanted was more Joker. Hey, that's an opinion though. :)

Well personally i think if Phoenix is given the chance to be play the joker thru out the entire movie I think he would be in a far first. as his roll depicts how the man Arthur evolves into the joker and the development of his new alternate persona as the joker. Through out the movie you get to see him how to joker wss formed and how he finally finds himself. by the end of the movie Arthur for lack of better words starts to feel comfortable in his own skin that being the joker skin. and finally finds his meaning more or less. That being said another movie with Phoenix as joker after watching and understanding how and why arhturs transformation into the joker happened is much needed and would probably be one of the best to come

where was the fun in Arthurs Joker? Not even fair to say Ledgers Joker origin would be a weird, entitled, depressed emo guy. The genius and brains Nolan gave to Ledgers joker really made it where you COULDNT pigenhole him as simply a mentally ill lunatic who needs meds. He was much too smart and disciplined, yet crazy as shit lol. Sorry, a good Joker is not a Joker who can be so easily figured out. You still have people questioning if Ledgers Joker possibly had a military background, psychology background based on Ledgers portrayl. Couldn't simpy write him off as crazy, or try to pinpoint his true motives.

Heath Ledger's is more of the Joker's TRUE side, how he confuses and hypnotizes his victims and/or allies, how he does crazy crime and proves he's sane and how HE really saved Gotham.
Joaquin Phenoix is more of how Joker came to be, or at least how he inspires another person to become the next joker, where he was underestimated for his homocidal sense of humor, but in this case, insanity by society, it's how he jokes around and speaks his mind that makes him a GREAT BEGINNER Joker. Joaquin Phenoix's Joker was good, but NO ONE can top Heath Ledger's Joker, if only Heath Ledger were still alive.

Top 2 Jokers of all time are Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix. Best Joker ever? I gotta give the slight edge to Heath Ledger being that he played the joker for an entire movie while Joaquin Phoenix played Arthur Fleck for the majority of the movie. Joaquin Phoenix performance in a sequel would be better comparison to HL joker because he would have played the joker for an entire movie

I like ledger because he is more of a political symbol to batman u wouldn't want to mess with and i like Pheonix's joker. Because it shows a joker who was turned down by the world and not seen as anything but a joke so he turns the joke back on them which makes an intimidating joker i love both jokers

The answer is simple. If you're an adult looking for a character realistic and deep as possible, then Joaquin takes it like a walk in the park. If you're looking for the character from the comic books, then Heath is more like him. That's all. As already posted here: Apples and oranges.

Both delivered amazing performances but I enjoyed Phoenixs portrayal more than Ledgers. A lot of that has to do how the character was written. However, Phoenix delivered The Joker as I imagined and was by far more disturbing than the others.

I mean you cant compare. Phoenix was the new Joker (Insecure, let loose, etc, while Ledger was the mature Joker (Intelligent, Cunning, Slick. So theyre both the same exact character, just at different points in their life.
