There are better reviews on such places as the Fighter Pilot Podcast, Ward Carols YT site and Movers YT site. All by actual Navy pilots who have been through Top Gun and are combat experienced. They all generally love the movie for the effort that went into various aspects while acknowledging that movie making has a certain licence in order to move the story along and create moments of humour, clarity and enjoyment. Buying a round at the bar or being removed for putting your hat on the bar or your phone is a real thing at several of the clubs around Naval bases according to those other pilot reviews. Ed Harris, plays the weathered Admiral here but in The Right Stuff he played John Glen, test pilot and astronaut. The Dark Star scenes are a nod to The Right Stuff as well as Chuck Yeager's famous F-104 crash in the high altitude tests leaving him injured walking across the remote desert (in the movie) after ejecting. John Glen retired a Marine Colonel which is the equivalent of a Navy Captain, Mavericks rank. Ed Harris remarks in the movie (not the trailer) that Maverick should be a two star admiral by now, if not a senator. John Glen went on to become a US Senator. John Glen also resigned that position in the 90's to once again fly on the Space Shuttle as the oldest astronaut making him a relic of a bygone era still active in the space community. Just like Maverick.

From NZ, I have very fond memories of seeing the original Top Gun Movie in 1986? Yes it was cheesy & jingoistic but it was alot of fun & a real blast! But what made it memorable for me was that I won a Top Gun competition at our Movie Theatres Premiere event & won a bunch of Top Gun merch, just by being seated in a randomly picked, lucky cinema seat! Top Gun Maverick brought that all back & was a wonderful, nostalgic trip down memory lane & I loved everything about it, it was so heartwarming with the awesome flying sequences & Lady Gaga s Hold my Hand score throughout the Film, it was very emotional. Bravo Tom Cruise, it was a helluva wait before we saw Maverick again, but worth the wait.

Incredible sequel. I half expected and thought it would have been a great idea towards the very end of the movie to have Penny s daughter, Amelia, get observed by Penny and Maverick making eyes at Rooster, with the scene cutting to Penny as she realizes her daughter has aspersions of following in her footsteps. She cuts her eyes to Maverick with that you better do something about this look on her face to which he just smiles and chuckles, realizing what s going through her head. Obviously the Amelia character was to young, but Rooster wouldn t have even had to know about it. It all could have taken place with him being oblivious to what was happening.

Why is it that nobody realizes that Rooster is too young to be Goose's son?
In the 1986 movie, Goose's son is roughly 3-5 years old meaning that if it takes place in 2022, he would be in his early 40s
Even if we go by Miles Teller's real age of 35, he's still too young
We assume that the pilots in the movie are in their late 20s/early 30s, it makes it worse
They say in the movie that, at his mother's request, Maverick held back Rooster's place in the Naval Academy for four years until she died, meaning that instead of entering the Academy at 18-19, he would enter at 22-23 instead

This isn't fully accurate. Pete didn't disrespect Penny. He clearly holds out his phone while reading the sign. or put your PHONE on the bar. . Also it's when he test pilots new projects is when he dons the old gear and motorcycle. Kind of symbolic of staying retro and in the same time true to his name- Maverick. He pushes and puts everything on the line for the sake of this new experimental project just because it's something new and different. When he's going to TopGun, he uses a Kawasaki Ninja X 4th gen which is a modern bike- symbolic of rediscovering himself.

They went to so much trouble to make flight authentic, then the editor dropped the ball twice by splicing in the wrong flight controls. Aircraft are not electric wheelchairs, so slamming the stick forward does not make aircraft accelerate with afterburners. Also, slamming the right pedal to the floor will only turn the rudder and tear the aircraft apart.

My second comment. Kind of silly I acknowledge ahead of time but since he acquired an older generation Tom-Cat in his escape and subsequent landing on the carrier, would have be cool seeing him working on it in his hanger at the end. Implying the Navy decommissioned it and removed all weapons and technology before allowing him to claim it.

There were other things too like, in some of the scenes there are 2 pilot/engineer per plane and in others 1 pilot and no engineer in a 2 pilot/engineer plane. Something missing!
When the last 5 gen plane was shot down and Hangman comes to save the day are you telling me that the 5th gen plane did not have him on his radar. BS!
