How Indigenous Critics Really Feel About Prey

Prey is proving to be a hit for critics and fans alike, but how do Indigenous film reviewers feel about this Comanche woman versus space monster flick? As a Native, I can say that Natives like Arnold's trifecta movies, Conan, Terminator and Predator. I remember watching Predator so many times growing up with my cousins. Billy was a favorite with us. So watching Prey with a Native cast was awesome, especially when some of my cousins i got together to watch it with their kids

It was a great action movie.
However, I completely disagree that this movie provided any level of authenticity to the people of the early 1700's.
In general, the movie was too pretty. Color theme was too bold and should have been more earth toned.
Everyone's clothing looking brand new and clean; none looked worn.
Plus, people from 300 years ago d8d not have access to modern health care, hygiene, and nutritional knowledge. Thus, people from the 1700's physically looked different than modern day people.
Everyone in this movie had perfect bodies, perfect faces, and even perfect teeth.
When the main character's face paint gets washed off, she looks like a modern day TikTok influencer.
One last point that drove me nuts was the word lion used in the movie.
There are no lions in the Americas.
So there would be no word in any Native American language that directly translated lion in English. The closest translations would have been big cat, wild cat, or maybe even bobcat or puma.
It wasn't a huge detail, but the lion was a main topic of conversation for most of the first half of the movie.

I liked it, it was interesting. But, having a girl as the main character was a bit unbelievable. I don t think a woman in the plains nation would allow a woman to be a worrier. Another-thing, all the guys got there asses handed to them, but not her, even Dutch got his ass kicked by the Predator and he had a full day to prepare traps to take him down. She used a flower and a flint lock pistol. Oh, she also knew the predators tech and how it worked, all this while running for her life and not knowing anything about it, she even did not know how to use the flit pistol at first, which is simpler than the Predators tech. She was her villages Squa-Man-she! I give it a 5 out of ten, entertaining.

1. The English the natives spoke was the audience's perception of the language they were actually using. 2. They didn't allow the lead character to do anything, if you watch the movie, everyone in her village was against it. That's why she had to sneak off to train and to hunt. 3. She picked up on how to eventually kill the predator by paying attention to every animal and person the predator killed. She didn't master alien tech, she used common sense. Scifi fans will find anything to complain about. I personally loved the movie and put it up there in the number 2 slot, right behind the 1987 original.

Keep sharing, reviewing, and rating and talking about sequels so we can get more to this story and eventually work up to more deadly predators. Let s go for the ride and see how they follow up. Good movie with Prey! Now let s keep it going guys. Theres a good chance there will be an all out war with elite Yatjua involved. Maybe even elders. But trust me. a war is coming with badass yatjua. Not ones that are inexperienced and can be out smarted and die. Almost every movie you have seen has been young yatjua. That will change. And show how unstoppable elites really are!

This movie had child like practical effects, and the costume design sucked. whats with all of you saying this is a great movie for native americans? go watch the revenant. AT least its more historically accurate, and the costume designs look legit. LMAO at people running around in cloth type clothing with 0 stains on them, ever. Must be tide.
Stop saying its realistic. It aint. Its like ww2 movies were the american soldiers uniforms are always perfectly clean, when they would be obviously been covered with mud, blood, every bodily fluid possible.

. WTAF? Little Big Man was more historically accurate than this. Much of this movie is nonsense - the Comanche living far enough north to meet the French, everyone drawing their bows like the only archery they had ever been exposed to was watching Avatar twice on the flight to the shoot, unmarried woman of her age, trying to hunt deer by throwing a stone axe, everyone wandering around in war paint doing daily village chores, and on and on and on. This is no more accurate than a 1960s western, and it wasn't even all that entertaining.

I really appreciate the effort for authenticity. I enjoyed that part of it, and it was honesty pretty good as a period piece.
I m just not sure the movie itself is great or even good. With due respect, there were no standout performances in the film. The best thing in the film(rightfully so) was the Predator. Specifically his battles with predators in nature - Wolf, bear.
However I felt after the bear battle scene, the movie lost its luster and ability to keep me engaged. It became pretty predictable after that.

So I did like what felt like the authentic and humanization of the Indian culture. the cinematography and the plot and female lead cast. but inconsistent use of intelligence and sporadic overpowered lead without some help or homage to a hire Comanche-Indian to make it a little surreal but pays respect ruins the immersion. not the best predator but still a premium culture must see film.

This movie stands out, and stands up to the entire franchise. I guess behind the original it is the best, or at least tied w Predator 2 I love the entire saga, even the recent one which I completely forgot about liking, and especially Alien Vs Predator which I LOVE and still watch all the time! This movie has me excited, and I was elated from minute one on! It was AWS

I'd love to see more historically accurate films about the native Americans, but I'm all set with this one. Am I to believe that a girl with a bow and arrow and knife killed an alien hunter? It's kind of a stretch. I'm all for suspension of disbelief to a degree, but this is like jar jar banks beating darth vader. Or night crawler beating Thanos one on one.

There wasn't enough background on the feral predator. Plus the movie should have ended with the body being recovered by the predators clan. Naru found a brass bullet casing, but this is supposed to be 1719. Brass casings weren't until 1800s. The ax / rope combo was completely Asian, but the cgi on the rope was so bad it doesn't matter.

2 whole critics, lol good enough I guess to speak for an entire people.
As a full blooded Native Dine, I can appreciate it for what it was an underdog coming of age action story but would have cool if they filmed it where the Comanche actually lived like Texas instead of Canada & had more people ride horse.

A Comanche dubbed version is better than no dubbed. However, I wish Hollywood would follow Indian cinema and film some of their movies in dual or multilanguage simultaneously if they knew ahead of time if the film is targeting or features a specific group. Maybe Prey will be the start for Hollywood?
