Matilda, An American Tail, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory, The Wizard of Oz, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang are just some childrens films that have dark moments, which we might have been oblivious too when we watched them as kids!

I don't care what people think of my comment, but stuff like this is RIGHT up my street. Too many times films for kids are feel good and pathetic, such as Chicken run or others. I like a dark twist to my films. Films such as Gremlins or Black cauldron. Even as a child I was more into darker things, I always hated red nose day and pudsey bear, I can't stand overly feel good sugary sappy films and kids TV! In the 90's they had some brilliant TV. But I've always gravitated towards darker things. My all time favourite film is AI, because it's surprisingly depressing and at the end the main character dies! I also like the film Enemy at the gates, a true corker in my opinion, the goodies in that film are not as good as you may think they should be, and it's based on a true story. Some of the characters were REAL people. There is too much fantasy these days. If I'm going to watch a fantasy film, it's going to be an oldie, Avatar was absolute garbage in my opinion, Tron is a way better film, for something sci fi that is! I just don't like modern OTT CGI filled films!

Watership Down wasn't a kids movie. And, I'd argue that the scene where Holly is recounting how the humans buried them alive, filled their chambers with poisonous gas, and closed their tunnels was much more horrifying than the dog chasing them around. Rabbits were pushing against the dead bodies of the other rabbits that were blocking the holes, and the eyes were rolling back in their heads, all the while Holly was saying we couldn't get out--creepy! And traumatizing. And I still love it, but that doesn't mean I wasn't traumatized as a kid watching it!

I wasn't traumatized by the bunny massacre, no, not even Prince of Darkness scared me even a bit when I first saw it. (Ps, that movie has people getting eaten alive by bugs, and a bunch of other stuff. I saw Watership down only two or three nights before I watched Prince of Darkness)

I don't know why but I've watched The Walking Dead I've seen guts and stuff in movies I've played games where people kill people but the minute it's in a movie an animated movie with killing bunnies and it shows them like wounded that's where I draw the line and go to therapy

My teacher in year 2 made us watch Watership Down as thats what we were doing for the school play (the whole primary school was involved, and we held it right next door at the high school) and I still remember being scared even though I only watched a little bit of it
reply

Little Monsters! I was hoping that movie would be on this list. The movie scared me so much as a child, especially when the lead evil character rips off his human face and shows the real monster version of himself.
reply

Fun Fact: the actress that the played the wicked witch was originally a teacher. She tried to go back to her job but all the kids screamed recognizing her from the movie. So, she went back to acting

I just watched the more modern movie of watership down and I was crying after that but to see what the original one is like may me burst into tears again (I'm horrible with animal death)
reply

Watership Down was never ever marketed or promoted as a children's movie. Parents just thought yay. talking rabbits, I'll take the kids. because Disney movies dumbed everyone one down
reply

The most scariest scene from an animated movie that still gives me chills All dogs go to Heaven Hell scene dream! You can Never come Baaaaack! I couldn't go to sleep for weeks.
reply

Tbh willy wonka is kinda ment for teens cause well yes the kids were ok but when all those kids made a mistake but it was a little traumatising even though they were ok
reply

The Beastmaster is not a children's movie. Just because it's PG, doesn't mean it's for children! Besides the film came out before the PG-13 rating was even created.
reply

I've seen the wizard of Oz and Charlie and the chocolate factory, but oddly don't remember those moments shown here. I do remember the Child Catcher though!

Be very careful what you let your kids watch, and what you watch yourself. I wanted to watch Watership Down, now I am not interested in the least.
reply

Are you sure the Dog Massacre was a dark moment and not the disturbing imagery of the rabbits suffocating when they were being buried alive
reply

I'm not sure what the proper name for it is, but the plague of death on the firstborns from The Prince of Egypt really messed me up
