Top 10 Friends Jokes that Would NOT Work on TV Today

Theres no excuse for distasteful jokes, but we have to admit, these jokes would definitely not fly in todays social climate. Fat Monica was always one of the prime running jokes throughout the series, even though it was fat shaming. They also mocked a recovering alcoholic, made fun of lesbians, and when everyone was transphobic. Eek, we definitely let a LOT of things fly back then

Well for one with the breast feeding episode and the barbie doll episode it is Chandler, Joey and later Ross that is supposed to look ridiculous for the way they're acting, they're the ones we're meant to laugh at not Carol or Ben. Also Chandlers dad isn't a transgender woman, he just does drag (though they probably should have just cast a man. Oh and the Monica fat shaming jokes are just that, jokes if some people can't handle them then that's their problem, someone is always going to be offended by any joke under the sun

I dont know whats the big deal. The ultra sensitive people who are offended should simply refrain themselves from watching it and leave the rest alone. The Americans havent become a more open and understanding society. They have become a more frightened, silenced and intimidated one unable to even decide for themselves what to watch, enjoy, or laugh about on their own.
The jokes are not dated except for the vocal few that finds offense in everything and want to impose their will on the rest.

There's a reason why Friends had the viewership it did. The show pushed the boundaries of what is acceptable to show on TV. Many shows at this time did the same thing. I remember Roseanne being that way as well. It's not people weren't aware and were clueless about these things. We knew it was controversial and that's why we watched. The only reason we don't see this today is because we're too afraid to offend anyone and show REAL PEOPLE doing REAL THINGS. Not necessarily the RIGHT things!

The thing that most people don't get is that 1. No one ever said this was about a group of 6 friends that were perfect people. And 2, in many of these moments someone else is telling the character what an idiot they are being. Like Ross trying to educate joey and Chandler on breast feeding or the girls pointing out to Ross how ridiculous he sounds about the Manny I think some of them can still work if people realize they are being flawed on purpose.

Sitcoms AREN'T REAL LIFE. All of them make fun of people and treat people in a way we shouldn't in real life. These are jokes, and not a roadmap for how to behave. I'd never make someone the butt of a joke in real life, but that's what ALL SITCOMS DO. Just teach young kids the difference or don't let them watch. Not everything is for kids. And as an adult you should understand humor. And no crap Ross is creepy. He was creepy then. Lol

People are waaaaaay too sensative. I have a trans son.
People need to keep in mind these were written from the characters perspective, not the morality perspective. We laughed at them because the characters were being absurd. It helped us process our own insecurities, judgements, etc and let us laugh at ourselves and in return, grow to accept such things such as trans, etc.

OMG, MsMojo, you're so wrong about everything here. I'm glad all the folks in the comments are pointing at your mistakes. There's nothing wrong with Friends even after 20 or 30 years of them being aired. They're still hilarious, educative and fun to watch, unlike the politically correct shows such as Modern Family or whatever else.
reply

If it was so offensive, then why wasn't anyone offended? Saying it's okay to be fat and I'm offended by fat jokes is a double standard. Bald men don't take offense to jokes. only fat women take offense. I'm a ginger. lots of jokes about gingers. Being offended by harmless jokes is a passive aggressive form of narcissism.
reply

Well young generation if this is offensive then dont watch married with children, mad tv, 90s bevis and butthead, 90s Simpsons, all in the family and well basically most sitcoms from back then. But back then we would watch these sitcoms for entertainment not to cherry pick what to get offended about.

MOJO is over rated.
Friends is an awesome show, till this day.
Someone from friends or the producer must have made someone upset, enough to try and cancel them out.
Offensive hahaha that must be a joke
When you have all this other explicit, truly offensive stuff on TV.

I'm gonna have to disagree with the Fun Bob's one. It is still a good episode with a good message about quit drinking when you're addicted. That's the main point of the episode and, in my opinion, the fact that he's turned dull is more like really just a joke.
reply

Trying to find the words to express how I feel after watching this but struggling. Why are you looking for offence where none is intended?
Also, I haven't seen any poofs, trannies or fatties complain about being offended in the comments.

reply

That's the reason TV shows today all suck.
I genuinely can't find a TV show that's just about a few white characters being themselves and have their story. Apparently EVERYTHING involving black / LGBTQ / gender equality issues.

reply

Ross has a masculinity problem because he wasn't the traditional do sports guy growing up. It's shown through the show with his relationship with his dad. So he having a problem with his son playing with dolls makes sense.
reply

Friends was and still is hilarious. People are way to sensitive now days, they all need to get a sense of humour and learn to take a joke even when they're the butt of it
reply

These scenes are only difficult to watch if you're a snowflake. Leave our generation alone please. Remember, someday your kids won't think you're woke and will cancel YOU!
reply

2023 and I'm a woman who's also not OK watching breast feeding in public yes, it's every woman's right to donut, but it's my right to feel uncomfortable sitting by.
reply

It wasnt difficult to watch at all. It only reminds me what kind of snowflakes we have become these days.
Set aside the lack of sincere humor and comedy.

reply

Saying Friends has aged in terms of social commentary is a bit of a stretch to me. If anything its the modern overly PC overcorrections that will age poorly.
reply

just watch it first before you believe this editing, there were definitely many offenses made but whether you like it or not thats a part of comedy
reply

The show and many other shows were made at a different time, that time was when you can laugh at comedy and not be whiny always offended idiot.
reply

Its comedy that addressed issues with positive outcomes. It addressed the elephant in the room and educated people about difficult topics.
reply

The fact that Chandler's dad was actually played by Kathleen Turner, a cis woman, who didn't pass as a transgender or transvestite IMO.
reply

If you find these jokes offensive, please go to the nearest kitchen, get a knife and slice your wrists. Thanks in advance!
reply

Eh, you could probably do most of these today. You'd just have to make it more clear that it's undesired behaviour.
reply

ppl nw are just too sensitive. cant say anything now. Freinds was funny and a great show. Thats why now TV is total crap
reply

Sad to actually come to a time where a video can be made about a light hearted comedy show being offensive. Society is weak
reply

Theres NOTHING wrong with two straight guys freaking out if they discover they were sleep cuddling with each other.
reply

I dont agree at all, your thoughts are delusional. Its just the show, dont mess it up. Not everybody thinks like you.
reply

Theyre jokes. Jeez. My best friend is gay and you all just are so offended I dont know you even leave the internet.
