Rating: 4.0; Vote: 1
A lot has changed since Sex and the City first aired 20 years ago! For this list, were looking at the scenes and plotlines that would raise eyebrows if they were aired today. Weve included issues like subtle racism. Remember when Samantha starts dating Chivon? A plotline like this would have been handled with much more insight and sensitivity if it were written today. Find out more in the video!

It's called progress. Use it to see how things have changed. Slating on shows like this is so unnecessary. I mean Downton Abbey wouldn't work nowadays and Henry viii cut his wife's head off for apparent adultery. Be glad you have the luxury to see how things have changed. Whether you want to admit it or not some of the questions asked are what women think and feel privately or amoungst friends, deny it all you want. Sorry I went out with someone who had slept with a man and I did have feelings around it, not because I had some deep discriminatory issue. It's life and exploring it, censor it and say it's wrong all you like!
Oh and credit was so easy in the 90's

I disagree with this except Carrie's unrealistic salary perhaps. (That always got me. I hypothesised that her column was syndicated worldwide and somehow generated lots of revenue) As for the other issues I think that SATC have always been realistic and kept it real. 2003 or 2023 it doesn't matter. The same concepts apply when you apply logic and common sense. Samantha for instance is a free very open minded woman who lives her life exactly as she wants it but doesn't force it on other people. For instance she a close friend of the much more conservative Charlotte and for the most part they learn to get along. She keeps it classy and and real.

CARRIE MEANS OVER SOME TIME SHE SPENT 40, 000 ON SHOES.
IT ALSO EXPLAINS IN THE SHOW THAT CARRIE LIVES IN A RENT CONTROLLED APARTMENT PASSED DOWN TO HER. THEN THERE IS her Salary and good credit.
Furthermore it goes on to say in that episode Carrie is broke. so she is having issues financially.
THERES YOUR ANSWERS
PIPELINERS. Also she receives help from mr. Bigs in this episode or one of her girlfriends; ( HAVJNG SMNESIA THE ONE WITH THE BROWN HAIR) I'm almost sure her friend gives her a hundred of thousands dollar diamond old wedding ring to help to get out of debt. THERE YA GO.

Americans and their weird delusion that everyone must have a black friend despite being such a small percentage of the populationno expectation all black people must have white friendships when there are so many more whites to go aroundlolAmericans almost talk in pure race. people these days are so bored, uninspired, and so lacking in a need to fight for their existence, unlike previous generations, they have deemed nearly anything we enjoyed as problematic because they want to fight for something, but we have been war freee too long

Sad. people today are being spoon fed racism but its packaged as virtuous liberalism. The biggest racist are those on the Left. EVERYTHING is about race and they seem to think pretty low or minorities because they feel they need some help and treatment to do simple tasks. Its so demeaning to be a minority and listen to over educated white peoples tell you your basically screwed in life be your not them. Sorry but race doesnt seal your fate or ability to be successful

What is the point in judging by today's standards? If we apply that to everything, every old film, tv programme ere etc would be deemed inppropriate. They definitely are inappropriate by today's standards. That's what progress is. It was great in it's day. It as progressive it's day. Leave it at that. It was ground-breaking, so that we could progress to where we are now.

I don't understand how Samantha dating a black guy was bad, the only one who didn't approve was his sister, and his sister meant a lot to him so they broke it off, his sister was the one holding prejudice. if it was aired today the majority of the criticism should be aimed at that character (not the actress) but not Samantha.

Black ppl can have all black casts, all black shows and I've never heard once the complaint of there's not enough white representation. In real life ppl tend to hang out with their own races for the most part. I know this sounds racist but if anyone can give me a solid answer and not attack/insult that'd be cool

I was a huge fan of this show during its airing (I was young, so give me benefit of the doubt lol, but watching reruns back, Carrie is INSUFFERABLE. Nauseating. This show was a bunch of privileged girls whining about their lives being empty without men, with the exception of Samantha. Spare me.

The elephant in the room here is that the popularity and wit of this show was DRIVEN by its politically incorrect attitude. And that is also why so many of SATC fans truly hate the sequel AJLT. I guess it could be phrased as the red pilled against the woke.
reply

I think SATC is a great picture of how far we've come. Those episodes are a testimony of the era and we have to examine them as such. It's not an example of what women have to act today, but of what we have to be better at.

1: 21 Actually, stuff like that still happened in 2018, still happening in 2021. When people of two very different races or religions try to date, there is going to be opposition. Even in present day, 2021.
reply

AND DONT compromise your morality or deny experience, yes a bi guy in a relationship with you absolutely will look up men online, dont kid yourself l. they are very much on their way to gay town
reply

All and all whether these situations were politically incorrect or not progresive by todays standards I think they were pretty realistic to the way people behave and think not to mention funny.
reply

#2 is dumb. It's a TV show, a fantasy, an escape. We, as viewers want to see Carrie in expensive fashion and going to the best restaurants and clubs. We don' t care how she affords it.
reply

Yes, now that we have made getting offended and identifying as an oppressed victim virtuous, nothing work nowadays. Have you seen And Just Like That! Exactly, I rest my case. Court adjourned.
reply

You mean would be written but it would not show the truth. Black familys are super racist to white people and they rather black women or men be with people the same skin color.
reply

I also find it realistic in 2000 with the blackwhite relationsship. things like that can happen. and later Miranda was more lucky that Robert doesnt put her into such trouble. .
reply

Why are Americans so race-obsessed? in my opinion by putting even more attention to skin color differences they sound and seem even more racist to me, paradoxically lmao!
reply

I dont see Samanthas character ever being flawed she was open and honest with everyone I admire her character even today the rest should take a leaf out of her book
reply

Society was much more free and liberal back then. Today, we live in the cancellation culture, where everyone is offended and triggered by just about anything.
reply

I would really like to know where some of you came up with this idea that TV characters are supposed to be perfect. how freaking boring would that be!
reply

The first movie is also racist. They go to Mexico and Charlotte didnt eat anything there believing it was bad or something. A complete insult.
reply

Why can't we show these today? Cause they don't exist or people are getting too boring and easily offended? That is why you call this classic.
reply

SATC is fiction and hilariously entertaining. This let's dissect it to see how unrealistic or regressive it is stuff, is not entertaining.
reply

What about the time Samantha uses a REALLY derogatory term for trans people? I just rewatched this show and that was my biggest moment.
reply

Carrie is secretly a hooker and Big was his avid client no wonder she can afford those clothes. They just didnt show that she was.
reply

Im sorry but the Adina versus Samantha episode was questionable even then! I cringe many times watching that episode!
reply

i think it is very progressive as for today, but what bothers me the most is that they just hated poor people
reply

Of course theyd make that girl being racist toward Samantha about her somehow being racist towards themlike gtfo
