Top 10 Iconic Couples in Classic Literature

Rating: 4.0; Vote: 1
These are the best couples in classic literature! For this list, were looking at the most beloved couples in literary works, including plays and epic poems. In terms of the term classic, were basing it more on how the book is regarded rather than the year of publication. Were also only considering couples who actually got together at some point. Weve included couples like Fermina Daza and Florentino Ariza from Love in the Time of Cholera, Benedick and Beatrice from Much Ado About Nothing and more!

I was actually worried that Romeo and Juliet would be #1, because if you asked me, I wasn't a huge fan of their story, even though I did feel sorry for them. Heck my fav character from there story was the comic relief, Mercutio. Loved the #10 pick, that tale is so underrated and so funny. If I were to pick a Shakespeare play it would be A Midsummer's Night Dream.
So happy that Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy were number 1 though. Even though I didn't like Eliza at first in the beginning of the book, my opinion of her changed after that first proposal and she stopped misjudging him, even though he was in the wrong too at times.
So happy a Greek Myth made it into this list. Even though I prefer Eros and Psyche, Odysseus and Penelope is a good pick.

While they definitely shouldnt be considered couple goals, Heathcliff and Cathy are my favorite. Not only because Wuthering Heights is one of my favorite novels, but because their relationship is fascinating. Tragic, toxic and complex.
Also, Im lowkey disappointed not to see Gatsby and Daisy on the list.

Catherine and Heathcliff and Jane and Mr Rotchester are horrible and toxic love stories. Just because the books are famous doesn't mean the romances are good. But Anne and Gilbert aren't there? The sweetest and best couple ever? Unfair. Mr Darcy and Lizzie were a great choice for first place tho.
reply

The two gothic romances, Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, I dont like it for the romances but for the book. And the P&P one is moderate. Im not a very big fan of it. I like Catherine and Henry in Northanger. Anne and Gilbert is also great. Another is the ones in Little Women, they ALL are good.

Where are the second Mrs. De Winter and Maxim? I mean, I know they arent an ideal couple (yknow, the months of miscommunication and poor mental health on both sides) but by the end of the book, it was clear they loved each other and they supported each other.
reply

What about North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell? Margaret and Thornton more than deserved a place (or at least an honourable mention) on this list. They are just as good, if not better, than Elizabeth and Darcy.
reply

My favorite Benedick and Beatrice will always be David Tennant and Catherine Tate. Thank goodness for Digital Theatre for making it possible for Americans to see British productions after the performances!

I remember when my high school did an abridged presentation of Much Ado About Nothing. I got to perform as Don Pedro and I remember having a blast being in a Shakespeare play.
reply

I dont know who made this list, but someone needs to read Anne of Green Gables and realise that there is no greater love then that of Gilbert and Anne. Nobody comes close.
reply

Seriously? Catherine and Heathcliff are ranked before Jane and Rochester? No Anne and Gilbert? No Emma and Knightly? There should at least be honorable mentions.
reply

What issues are there with Jane Eyre? Its my favorite book. Missing are Anne & Captain Wentworth, Bathsheba & Gabriel, Emma & Mr Knightley, Anne & Gilbert
reply

No honorable mentions? Prince Rama and Princess Sita: The Ramayana, Duke Orsino and Viola: Twelfth Night, Anne Elliot & Frederick Wentworth: Persuasion?
reply

Great list and I love all the couples mentioned but I think Anne and Gilbert should've been mentioned as well. They're one of my favorite books couples.
reply

1. Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy
2. Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe
3. Emma and Mr. Knightley
4. Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth

Scarlett and Rhet are my all time favourite fictional couple. And if anyone disagree? Well, frankly my dear I dont give a damn.
reply

If you are going to watch a Jane Eyre adaptation watch the BBC series with Ruth Wilson - it's far better than the others I've seen
reply

Ugh. I struggle with iconic of some of these couples. Because I would NOT want to model my relationship after some of these haha
reply

How can you not have Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe on this list. Not good not good. They are one of my fav book couples.
reply

Catherine and Heathcliffe: iconic? yes. a love story? absolutely not that story is about obsessive love turned to hate
reply

How about Prince Charming and Cinderella? It was written by the Grimm brothers so it's technically classic literature.
reply

I am so happy that Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy is number 1. I've always loved Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion.
reply

They should make an Odysseus movie with Sean Bean playing the character. It can be like a sequel to the movie Troy
