I grew up watching Golden Girls. If only I had really understood what Dorothy meant about doctors treating her like her pain wasn't real. Maybe I would've been more ready. I started getting sick (like my dad who killed himself when I was 9) and everyone just thought I was trying to be like my dad. It wasn't until when I was 18 and started getting fevers every day that my immediate family believed me and the doctors stopped insinuating that I was crazy. Im 24 now and I have gone through so many tests that discovered small illnesses but not the serious illness that has me in pain all the time, sick all the time, bedridden, hot, and has almost killed me 3 times in 6 years alone.

I learned that it existed in the early 1990's, mostly because my mother and some of my aunts really liked it. 30 years later, I finally appreciate what a great program it was and still is today. Whenever I see an episode at random times, I feel like I'm watching my mom and my aunts in silly and comedic situations. It really does get better with age. God rest the souls of those dearly departed ladies. What a gift they gave to the world.

I just recently went through a hip surgery that took a year and a half to get. No doctor beileved my pain because they couldn't see it and because I am only 26 years old. When I saw the episode Sick and Tired this last week, I sobbed. This show is so important and wonderful and sooo ahead of its time. Thanks Dorothy.

I think one message the Golden Girls hammered in was to respect peoples life choices, regardless of your own personal opinions. Its okay to not agree with something, just dont let it turn you into a bigot. I think thats a wonderful message. Considering the period this show was aired in, its very progressive!

Chronic fatigue syndrome, from the #6 episode, is not a mental illness. It is a legitimate physical illness. She was repeatedly told she just had a mental illness and nothing was wrong with her by Dr after Dr because they were not aware of or did not believe in the physical disease!

the suicide episode is scary. after being sent to the hospital for an attempt and worry about being alone even at 19. Then seeing how scared and angry my mom was just because she was so worried about losing me. never give up never surrender

Even Golden Girls bought into opioid hysteria. Is there any show that actually understands the difference between chronic pain patients and those with substance use disorder. These shows are happy to see chronic pain patients die.

My grandmother died 4 years ago. She was 98 years old. The whole family took care of her until her last breath. We gave back what she had given to us when we were younger. I miss her a lot.
