These are the top cliches in love triangles! For this list, well be looking at common tropes and cliches of love triangles, as so often employed in popular narrative media. Some are good, some are bad, but were not really interested in making value judgments. For our purposes, well be ranking them based on their pervasiveness and impact in popular culture. Want to

#5 Interference by Friends and/or Family If you think it's an overdone cliche for love-triangles in American Hollywood. there's a lot of non-English language film/tv industries that use that cliche every chance they get! As a an avid watcher of South Korean TV dramas. I can speak for most of us Kdrama fans when I say that meddling family & friends triggers an epic eye-roll at best. Usually the introduction of the impeccably dressed and composed mother of one of the romantic leads sends me into an immediate feeling of dread. Oh, here we go. prepare for heartbreak for the next 5 episodes.
I do have to say though, South Korean TV has some of the best romantic dramas & comedies around. If you like the genre at it's most heartfelt and subtle (& sometimes really cheesy.

What about the Beauty and the Beast trope? You know the one: A person caught between a good-looking/wealthy suitor and, on the other point, a suitor who's disfigured or has a disability. It's often a girl caught between two men, like in The Phantom of the Opera or, obviously, Beauty and the Beast, but occasionally, gender-reversed versions are done, such as in Victor Hugo's The Man Who Laughs. That story has a love triangle between a disfigured clown, the blind girl he's loved since childhood, and the haughty, voluptuous duchess who pursues him simply for thrills.

Why does it always have to be one or the other?
WHY CAN'T WE HAVE BOTH? Why can't there be people out there that are kind, gentle and sweet but also have a dangerous side that is rash, impulsive and spontaneous? Someone who's fun and outgoing and a thrill to be around, but also enjoys the quiet, comfortable and simple things in life? It's frustrating how you have to choose between these things when you can find your kind of perfect somewhere else I mean. they're somewhere out there, you just have to look close enough to find them ya know?

So, from Buffy to True Blood or Vampire Diaries is just the same plot, not surprise there, just saying although I still love them.
Anyone here disagrees with Titanic and The Notebook as classic examples? I think the scripts showed from the beginning who the main couple was, right. at least in Gilmore Girls you could guess wrong
PD: Chris Pine, not once but twice, I approve!
The animated movies bit are gold, btw.
Stop already with the notebook please.

Never thought I would ever end up in such a complicated relationship type, but thats what ended up happening. I was dating someone, but my best friend at the time was just way more interesting and fun and my feelings grew for him as they lessened for the other guy. I dabbled in intimacy with both and unfortunately it ended in heartbreak for the poor first fellow. Were still friends though, and he makes it clear he still has feelings for me.

what about the love at first sight? It is soooo painful especially when character A has known character B for so long when he just saw character C for the first time ever and then character A chooses character C over character B who is obviously desperately in love with him and has been for a long time. (haha im just thinking of Eponine/Marius/Cosette from Les Miserables)

I just need to vent; Jean Gray and Wolverine is the dumbest thing ever. Jean and Cyclops all the way. Jean is the one who is supposed to be the interesting one in the relationship. Cyclops is Jean's rock when she goes crazy in the dark phoenix ark. Wolverine only makes sense with Storm. Wolverine makes more sense with Nightcrawler than Jean Gray.

funny how Gilmore Girls was used for the nice guy/bad boy cliche, yet in that case the bad boy Jess ended up being the best of Rory's suitors. Logan was constantly immature & kind of a douche, while the supposedly great Dean was super possessive & jealous of her. Jess actually grew up, and became a much better person in the end.

where the girl/guy is actually in love with both options should be number one or at least on the list. Most love triangles have a clear winner, like we all knew bella would choose edward. But with others the woman/man actually loves both and we're never quite sure who she/he will choose until the end, like when Katniss chose Peeta(OTP)
reply

Twilight is probably the first love triangle that pops into my mind but, for the movies at least, it wasn't really a love triangle because Bella always told Jacob that she wanted Edward and only Edward and Jacob was like a pushy third wheel always trying to convince her that he was better than Edward because Edward was a vampire.

There was no love triangle in Buffy season 6, so I don't see why put Buffy and Spike there. Unless you mean that the third point is Buffy's Slayer status and moral sense.
And how is True Blood a good example, when both Bill and Eric were murderous vampires? Neither of them was good.

Of course in the nice guy/bad boy triangle the initial impression of which is the right choice tends to be red herring to make it more dramatic as the heroine tries to choose the guy who seems like the right choice and stay away from the rebel.

What about pearl harbor. Ben was thought to have dird, so josh took the girl she gets pregnant then Ben returns. Only to go back to war with josh and josh dies. Leaving Ben with josh's baby and his girl who originally was Bens anyway

As often as it is used to describe love, _Could ever hear by tale or history, The course of true love never did run smooth. _ (William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Act 1 / Scene 1, I just had to use it.

I hated this trope this love triangle story just doesnt grab me but at least some were done okay like some Disney movies Aladdin or, the little mermaid but the rest in other media doesnt seem to grab me.
reply

Honestly, love triangles are one of my least favorite tropes. They're lazy, overdone, unrealistic, and make out the person in the middle as just a prize to be won, rather than a genuine character.
reply

I love that scene in Buffy when she pushes Riley and Angel apart. It shows how strong she is that she can push her vampire ex and soldier current bf apart while they are arguing.
reply

This is only really an issue in predominantly monogamous cultures. Why can't there be more movies with polyamorous romance? Have there been any noteworthy ones? I can't name any.
reply

I've been the best friend one before. Only we didn't get together. It sucks being in love with your best friend. Especially when they know and don't reciprocate the feelings
reply

How about two best friends who fall in love with the same person? I've seen that more times than I can count. Brooke/Lucas/Peyton OTH? Dawson/Joey/Pacey Dawson's creek?
reply

How about the arguments in love triangles! Take Sebastian, Monique and Olivia and Duke, Justin and Viola in She's the Man and Ramos, Sasha and Danjou on Take the Lead!
reply

Honestly, after watching this, I would love to see a Top Ten Love Triangles in Soap Operas, just because some of those love triangles can go on for decades!

4: 23 went from cinderella to the guy saying you must marry princess and i was like, wait, cinderella had to marry a princess? Where can i watch

Anime also has love triangles, but they are much worse, they even compete who is better, and none of them say wife correctly.

The core of every tragic love novel and the inspiration of the most painful heart wrenching yet beautiful love stories of all time.

I agree with the Two-Person Love Triangle, One Good One Evil, Rich Suitor Poor Suitor, and the Gentlemen or the Scoundrel.
