Top 10 Movies Where Love Does Not Conquer All

Top 10 Movies Where Love Does Not Conquer All

In conventional romance movies, they tell us that love conquers all. While the idea seems romantic and blissful, sometimes love just isnt enough. Weve excluded animated features and, needless to say, a spoiler alert is in order. Movies like La La Land. Brokeback Mountain, Lost in Translation, The Way We Were, Her, Cast Away, Once, Edward Scissorhands, Roman Holiday and Once have been featured on our list

I'd add Terry Gilliam's BRAZIL as well, even though the romance isn't the focus of the film. The ending montage is so well made and so heartbreaking that the chief executive of Universal Studios recut the film to create an alternative ending which has since been called the Love Conquers All version. Fortunately this ending was super shit so we ended with the original version anyway!

I think they specifically left off movies in which one or both of the lovers dies (e. g. Titanic, Romeo and Juliet, The Great Gatsby, etc, although I wish they'd made that clear from the start. Also surprised Gone With the Wind isn't on here; I thought it and Casablanca would be the top 2 spots.

I agree with so many of your choices (Brokeback Mountain. The Way We Were. La La Land. Casablanca. And you introduced me to several I now want to see! BUT, how did West Side Story not get on this list! (Or is it because this list doesn't include movies where one character dies)

I might get flack for this but Barbara Streisand in The away We Were was kind of stalker-ish. Hubble gets plastered and she brings him him then undressed him and herself before getting in bed with him as he's passed out drunk. How is that romantic?

Lol Her, Lost in Translation and La La Land are 3 of the movies in my top 5 (most days. Also on the list is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (which is kinda ambiguous) and 500 Days of Summer which is also not a happy ending (for the two leads)

I know people love to complain about the prequels but if you really want a movie where love not only doesnt conquer all but totally screws everything up, Star Wars Revenge of the Sith kind of wins lol.

Casablanca feature in every romantic topic like best Quote, love triangle, plot twists, reunion, noble choice, untouchable movie, refugee movie, meaningful song and all time beloved movie.

No Love, Actually? Several instances where love didn't conquer all. Granted, there were a few that did, but the ones that didn't were quite heartbreaking.

La La Land is one of my favorite movies ever, but what about The Fault in Our Stars? And Me Before You? Those endings are tragic.
reply

You all keep acting in your list like One Day didn't exist like its not one of the best romantic movies (And book) of all time.
reply

I get that it's film where both of the character stay alive at the end but what about THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY?
reply

Like half of LGBT movies ever made should be on the list. Not lots of Happily Ever After there. LOL) or hmmm(
reply

The ones that come to mind: Brokeback mountain, Gone with the wind, Pochahontas, The bridges of Madison county.

King Kong (2005) should've been on here the ending makes me mad and feel empty inside at the same time >: '(

Has anyone seen The Student Prince? I grew up on that film, used to cry so hard at the end. I was eight.
