The original film is practically perfect in every way, but how does its long-awaited sequel stack up? Were evaluating a wide-range of categories to determine which film is the most timeless and all-around magical. Theres a spoiler alert in effect here

I watched Returns on the BBC on Christmas Day and against all expectations, quite enjoyed it. I especially appreciated Lin-Manuel Miranda's very fine performance. It was an ironic fact that a native born New Yorker could execute a flawless Cockney accent whereas the English Emily Blunt could not pull off a convincing plummy old school English accent!
The improvements in filming techniques were very apparent and the references, both musical and otherwise to the original were timely and not overdone at all. Lovely too to see a brief appearance by Michelle Dotrice and Dick van Dyke towards the end.
The film's biggest failings, if they could be called that by comparison to the original, is that I defy anyone to be able to remember any of the tunes after leaving the film behind. I enjoyed the music, although struggled to latch on to the words (a common fault in modern film making where audible and legible dialogue is NOT a priority. The two best numbers0w ere undeniably The Lovely London Skies and the poignantly lovely Place where Lost Things Go. But will these become part of modern culture like Chim Chim Cheree for example? I doubt it.

I think there are criticisms for the original film and praise for the the second film. First, Dick Van Dyke's cockney accent was cringe-worthy throughout the movie. Second, a number of scenes ran way too long, namely Step in Time, and Mr. Banks' nightly slow walk to be fired. Also, there are some pretty bad composite effects in the Spoonful of Sugar number where Mary snaps her fingers to make things happen, there the scene looks grainy and high contrast. For Mary Poppins Returns the animation-live action effects have been perfected. There is also a more immersive look into the city of London; more streets, more angles. I think the scene with Mary floating along side Big Ben's clock face expresses a new iconic moment for the character. The serious money loss and redemption story with a ticking clock deadline played well. Here the characters have a definite villain to contend with. The three Banks children were a bit more believable than the two in the original film. Instead of causing trouble, they had minds of their own and acted involved in the plot to save things in the second film. Just a few thoughts.

I feel like changing the main characters personality only works in a remake but not so much in a sequel especially when we don't get an explanation why the person who talk so much about not being rude, is so incredible rude, all the time. especially in the beginning. and I really disliked how she let jack and the other men almost fall to their death until she thought to fly but I really didn't like that part anyway. I wish they would have gone more away from the original, so that they could have actually established deeper emotions. The original movie also follows more themes than the clip mentions. I mean the first gave the storyline about the Bank. It actually goes way deeper in this and I feel like it comments on it and finacial systems. there is actually only two original themes in the second movies. Not losing the house and the ever green of children plots: a dead parent.

The original Mary Poppins is practically perfect in every way as a musical, but as Mary Poppins, not even close. Yes, we all enjoyed the movie and songs (especially Chim Chimeree and Feed the Birds, but to any child raised on the Mary Poppins books, I could understand P L Travers' horror at the smiling, bouncing, singing nanny. The second movie was good, if still too cheery, and at least, captured more details from the books. Both good movies, neither one a true Mary Poppins, which I reread periodically, all four, at an age I won't disclose. Needless to say, I'm well familiar with the grumpy, gruff magical nanny. Never offered a spoonful of sugar, but gave the Banks' children far more. Always enjoy your videos!

Julie Andrews is the Mary Poppins we all grew up with and loved so much and I totally agree with her and the first movie being the winners of this comparison. Although with the bar being raised that high, i think Emily Blunt did a magnificent job and, as the video mentioned, her approach was closer to the books. Julie Andrews is the Mary Poppins in all people's hearts but Emily has once again proven her skills and extraordinary talent by stepping into Julie's shoes and continues her legacy.
And I have to admit, I am so happy that people appreciate Emily's work in this one and not being all too stubborn about the og and snubbing the sequel

Now; I want to clarify to everyone about the Mr. Dawes Jr. issue from MPR; first of all, even though Dick Van Dyke's role was credited as Mr. Dawes Jr. ; I do not think that was the real Dawes Jr. at all; ever since the first time I saw the film, I have been suspecting that Mr. Dawes Jr. in this film was actually Bert in disguise; Because it seemed awfully too convenient (even by movie standards) for a retired bank owner to come into his former office to save the day. All of you I am sure you'd seen the same as I have that MPR Mr. Dawes Jr. behaved more like Bert from '64MP.

I took my grandkids to see Mary Poppins Returns. They had already seen the original many times before. Their initial impression was that they liked Mary Poppins Returns better, but when asked again after some a few years have passed, they couldn't remember much about Mary Poppins Returns or sing any songs from it. But they could sing any song from the original Mary Poppins easily when prompted and knew the story intimately. It seems that the original has a certain magic and soul that RETURNS lacks

Yes I know it was established near the beginning of MPR that Bert was taking a trip around the world; he could've been on his last leg by midway through the film's events. Judging by the movie's story's timing I'd say he'd been back for the first few days of the second week Mary Poppins had been in her charge with the children since he landed that last saturday of the previous week; that would've given Bert plenty of time to set up that little charade.
reply

MPR Michael Banks; due to his stubborn nature forgets to listen to his children when it matters most; this sort of thing happens in real life all the time. Many grown ups forget that there are some things from the adult world that children do understand and they are resilient with some of these matters even if it is not quite fully clear to them yet; You all recall that similar sort of concept happening in Nanny McPhee 1

So glad I watched Saving Mr. Banks before watching Mary Poppins Returns. The author P. L. Travers disliked the Disney 1960s film adaptation that the majority of the public loved and approved. If P. L. Travers were still alive today, she would had approved more the sequel and the performance of Emily Blunt who did stayed faithful to the Mary Poppins from the books.

Alot of people likes the original Mary Poppins, and Alot likes mary Poppins returns, then there are those who likes both. Heres the kicker Julie Andrews who played the original Mary Poppins gave her blessing to Emily Blunt to play Mary Poppins in the sequel, and Julie Andrews herself watched Mary Poppins returns and gave it her seal of approval.
reply

I sort of consider it a draw between the two, however, I would have to give the nod to the original as we would not have this wonderful sequel if not FOR the original. I do believe they did capture much of the original spirit of the original in the sequel. I love both movies and when the sequel came out, I felt like a kid again watching it.

I like Mary Poppins Returns a lot, but the original just cant be compared. Blunt plays her role well, but, as good as she is, just doesnt possess the charismatic charm that is natural in Julie Andrews. The 1964 film was pure magic, for 1964, and Mary Poppins Returns only reinforces the originals supremacy.
reply

If you were honest it would be original
5.
Returns 0.
Emily is a good actress. But doesnt have charisma, smile or magic
The songs are terrible because they arent memorable.
The acting is average compared to the original.
Its not awful.
But it shouldnt have been made.

Everyone remembers the iconic songs from the original! Those are tough to beat. So in that aspect, the original wins. Julie Andrews is practically perfect in every way, shes the definition of Mary Poppins. Walt Disney made the right choice going to see Camelot to pick Julie Andrews for this role.
reply

I will do 5-0, to 1964 version, a huge difference are Bert, and the father figures, also the songs, wich are pointless in 2018, except for the cover is not the book, for animation the 1964 was revolutionary, the 2018 is way behin Roger Rabbit, Nardia, Harry Potter, and Paddingtone, so.
reply

I think both of them were really good in their own way but since Lin-Manuel Miranda was a singer not a dancer they had to forgo the penguin dance for something else which I was kind of bummed out about because the penguin dance was one of the best parts
reply

maybe you should hae added acting as a catagory, dick van dykes pathetic cockney accent verses all of the acting by the return cast and julie andrews comic portrayal v Emily Blunts close depiction of the original character of Mary Poppins in the books
reply

When I knew they was remaking the movie I was like no but then I heard that Emily is playing her my opinions changed I know no one can do better than Julie but Emily has done the same things as Julie like thriller comedys and musicals if you agree
reply

Just say what you want to say. I dont care. The point this video made is bassicly show why mary poppins is a movie beyond the word good, briliant, excellent or even outstanding.
Both movies is just simply. supercallifragilisticexpialidocious

reply

The og mary poppen is better because it took walt a long time to get permission to make it and he worked closely with the author, and he kept as close as possible to the stories (it's a bunch of short children's stories)
reply

I am only 12 years old. But In my opinion, I loved or prefered the original and the one and only Julie Andrews. Even though, Emily Blunt did such a great acting on being a Mary Poppins. By the way I loved both of them.
reply

For me the storyline of the MP1 is better than MP2. The graphics from the MP1 is better as it holds sentimental worth. The songs of the MP1 are better than those in MP2 although Emily Blunt did a great job!
reply

Can you do Les Miserables vs Hamilton: Which is the better historical/revolution musical?
Categories could be Historical accuracy, Storytelling, Characters, Impact and Influence, and of course Music.

reply

both have imagination whimsical moments both have leading ladies that have love of adventure and whole hearted very enlightened but the original has nostalgia the 18 version has diversity and adult
reply

It's my first time to watch and to know about Mary Poppins because of Emily Blunt so I choose Mary Poppins Return Plus I love the costumes, the animation and the music esp the bath scene
reply

A 'Remake' for me, not a 'sequal'. Too much copying of original films ideas, with not enough new material to justify it's proclaimed purpose, of progressing the story.
reply

YOU MUST BE CRAZY WITH YOUR COMMENTS SOME TIMES. The first Mary Poppins was far better and everyway. music visual. Theanimation can not be compare to the first one. sorry!
reply

Both great. Julie's an icon. She will live in my heart for the rest of my lost. I think her voice sounds exactly like love. Poppins and Sound of Music are the best!
reply

Grief is a important topic, especially in a kids film, but if you don't care or connect with the characters or the love one they've lost. it's doesn't mean a thing
