Own that stage. For this list, were looking at parts from musicals that are feared and revered the world over for the acting, singing and/or dancing requirements needed to pull them off. Well be combining both female and male roles, but be sure to

Phantom of the Opera came to mind as soon as I saw the title. I saw it performed in Cleveland about 5 years back. It was fantastic (other than our seats being a bit crappy. The music gave me chills. OFC I grew up listening (and memorizing) Michael and Sarah, so naturally I compare to them. I must say the performers for this show did not disappoint. I heard our leading lady had studied under Sarah for the role. Seems she sets the standard still to this day. But Michael's voice. his sound is just so unique to him. When the movie had come out, I had very high expectations. I had found myself a bit disappointed for a while, but grew to respect their work individually rather than by comparison.

Hey so I havent watched this video yet but Jane Doe from Ride the Cyclone should be here.
The actress has to act like a dead girl whos head was cut off and had no memory of herself or her life. She has to toddle around like a puppet and act like her head is LITERALLY a dolls. Not to mention the singing required. She has to be able to hit insane high notes consistently the entire musical. And in her big number, she had to do them wearing a harness, up in the air, moving around, spinning, and just straight up being upside down. Without wavering.
Crazy talent. Should definitely be on this list

The Great Comet has so much choreography, difficult acting with strong emotions having to convey the characters' inner turmoil as they go through their arcs, incredibly difficult songs to nail for all sorts of roles, AND they had to learn to play musical instruments that they would be playing live on stage IN CHARACTER as part of the band and often being the sole focus.
Once again, the Great Comet was robbed by Dear Evan Hansen smh.

Id have to say, Billy Elliott. It took 3 different actors to play Billy during a performance, because the amount of dancing made it impossible for a single actor.
And, I think both Carrie & Margaret White in Carrie because of the emotional strain both go through. Margarets bat crap insanity, and Carries torment & abuse at both home & school.
But, thats just my opinion, take it or leave it.

I'm gonna say it: Evan Hansen is NOT a difficult role. Sure the character has anxiety, but there are so many people and actors with anxiety already that they don't really have to act. His vocal range also isn't that difficult(I'm a soprano btw. If you want a difficult role, Elle Woods from Legally Blonde: The Musical is the way to go. If you want to respectfully disagree with me, I'm all ears.

The fact that they put in a clip of Dreamgirls' And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going but still didn't actually acknowledge it. Also the fact that that isn't even the hardest performance in the show. According to Amber Riley, who played Effie on the West End, I Am Changing is the most difficult performance in the show

Evan Hansen and the lady with the mental problems does not belong on this list. You need people with beautiful almost operatic singing voices and strong powerful acting. I understand you have to put some of the recent musicals in to balance but I know I will always dislike at least 3 choices.

The AUDACITY they have to put Christine Daae in tenth place and evan hanson in second. Christine is not just a WAY harder singing role, but a harder acting role too. Evan hansen's entire character basically relies on ben platt's ability to cry on command.

So many pretentious douchebags replying to comments making known their extensive knowledge of musical theater and why original commenter has a wrong opinion, here's what they would think if they knew half what said pretentious douchebags did. Gag me

Asaka in Once On This Island also seems pretty damn hard to me for some reason, especially with that Bb6 whistle tone that Alex Newell occasionally threw in there. Might've just been the way Alex sang it that made it so impressive though

One of the notes in the soundtrack for phantom of the opera was actually recorded separately because it was really high. Then a character had to sing it again in the same song and it wasn't recorded separately.
reply

George or Dot from Sunday In The Park With George. insanely difficult score and material plus both characters have to play two different roles and sing the whole show with very difficult score and breathing
reply

I'm sorry but, I have to add Laura Bell Bundy as Elle Woods in Legally Blonde - The Musical. The amount of energy just to keep up with the cast AND the vocally taxing score make this one a no brainer for me.
reply

I genuinely forgot her name Im so sry but Ill just put the song for the first one and the second one it just obvious
Whipped into shape-Legally Blond
Heather Chandler-Heathers
Veronica-Heathers

I would say that Eva Peron is harder than Evan Hansen. But Mama Rose is a really hard role to nail. You could have mentioned Gretchen Weiners or Karen Smith(mostly Karen) from Mean Girls.
reply

I would also like to add Matilda. That has to be a literal child and there are SO MANY LINES and complex sentences and words for little kids and Matilda is almost always on stage. So Matilda

Almost all the clips here gave me chills. Wow. Also I think Lydia from Beetlejuice should definitely be here too. Her belting and the way the actress plays her is the best
reply

I was sorry that Hamilton was only honorable mention. Daveed Diggs in particular has to do some time warping singing to get all his words in and so flawless!
reply

these, with one exception, are all modern musicals. so there are NO musicals pre-1980 that are difficult to sing? I find that VERY hard to believe.
reply

i honestly had no idea that imelda staunton was in a musical and could sing like well! but i prob should seeing as i have a huge obsesson for harry potter
reply

Imelda! I never knew she was a Broadway actress at all! Only knew her from Harry Potter!
And I totally agree with Barbara Streisand and Bette Midler!

reply

Into the woods is another great one that wasn't mention. There are so many songs on there that are hard and amazing. The greatest showman also

My all time favourite musical is the first one I ever seen on tv it's called Memphis and it made me cry like baby
reply

Yeah, playing Elle is crazy. You have to be on stage the whole time, look gorgeous, snd be able to sing act & dance
reply

Im trying to figure out why Stephen Sondheim wasnt represented on this list, especially Sweeney Todd.
reply

I don't envy anyone that takes on the role of Henry Jekyll in Jekyll and Hyde. It is such a physical role.
reply

Ok but why isnt lydia deetz on there. Dead mom killed Sophia anne Carusos voice and the belting is so hard
reply

Wow. This video is just copy pasted clips from the male/female ranking separate videos, love the effort
reply

I sang Madame Thernardier's part in One Day More when my college choir sang it in our spring concert.
