Top 10 Differences Between The Vampire Diaries Books & TV Show

Throughout its eight-season run, The Vampire Diaries TV series didnt exactly follow the books word-for-word. From Elenas friends to Bonnies relationship with Damon, the CW series made a lot of changes. Its time to brush up on the original books and see what didnt make the cut. MsMojo ranks the most major differences between The Vampire Diaries books & TV series. Do you think these changes were for the best or are the books simply better than the show? This is why I stick to the books, they stripped VD of what made it good by recycling everything in the series. Taking out all the good stuff like the Kitsune Twins Shinchi and Misao.
They should have stuck with the source material and had a ton more stuff to work with.

The actress of Harley or Mary-Louise would have been a good choice for the part of Elena/Katherine.
For me, the actresses of Elena, Caroline and Rebekah were far to tall - fresh coming from a catwalk of models? To tall for the other juveniles in Highschool, to tall in life and to tall for the male actors. 10 inches less height would have be better.
The abilities of vampires should be much more taken into the show.
The first two seasons of the show was such a copy of Twilight Saga with some items from Buffy. Continuing that would have ended the show in season three or four. - And no, Elena in the show was hysterical, selfish, cheating, fooling with guys, manipulating and bossing. Elena and Damon were separated after death, he did not join her afterlife. It seemed instead, he died earlier than Elena and became a vampire soul again (see ending scenes, the crow. Damon (as a ghost) picked her up at the graveyard and brought her to her parents house, without entering. Instead, he joined his brother, waiting for him at the Salvatore House.

I dont hate Elena, the only reason I don't like her is she broke Stefan heart and tried to defend Damon for every time he screwed up just becuz she love him, and she judge Katherine so much while her lover Damon is just the same as her, at least all the things Katherine did was for survival what was Damon excuse? And in the triangle relationship I don't blame Elena like most people do, it was Damon who was wrong from the beginning, it was him who want Elena while she's with his brother, when Stefan was gone Damon was there for her and she got feelings for him but we saw at the end of season3 even though she knows she have feelings for Damon she still choose Stefan, it was the sire bond what makes her fall out of Stefan it was the sire bond what makes her loves Damon more than Stefan, and she just keep loving Damon till the end, that's just the facts

Within the Vampire Diaries Book series Klaus is depicted as a pureblood vampire and a Dark God, one of the 'Old Ones' who existed long before the construction of the pyramids in 2500 B. C. He claims to have fought in the Trojan war and played a role in the downfall of the Roman Empire.
In the novel series, Pure Bloods is described as a race of vampires that predates the age of man and was among the most powerful of the Ancient Ones. While they share some similarities to modern vampires, they are nothing like their modern counterparts. Pureblood vampires are extremely rare, as they are born from two vampires successfully conceiving and carrying a child to term. It is uncommon for a vampire to conceive a child with another person in general, making Pureblood vampires a rare occurrence.

delena in the show and the books is very different, they never even slept together in the books they had attraction but not in the way the show presented it, damon and elena were so so toxic in season 5 and in season 5 i was such a stelena shipper but elena forgetting damon in season 6 was a blessing in disguise because this was a way to re-start their relationship and elena noticing the change in damon and falling in love with his good parts while knowing the dark parts: ) it was genuinely healthy in season 6 and it felt like a new part of them was born

What the writer and the creators of the show, could have Nina Dobrev to dye her hair blond or put on a blond wing and make her wear blue contact lenses. U don't have to get another character to play Elena Gilbert and Katherine Price. Nina Dobrev is just fine with Elena and Katherine. All u have to do is make her dye her hair blond or just get a wing and give her blue contact lenses.

TVD will always be the show for me who created awesome characters, gave them a great back story and then had no idea what to do with them. Jeremy, Tyler, Enzo, Alaric, Silas, werevolves, Sybil the siren, Meredith Fell, even Bonnie a little bit, all had such great potential and then became just meh, it's a shame!
reply

When I heard about the books. I wondered.
WHAT ADAPTATION.
It's a completly different story with the same character names and small tid bits
Am I Right?
Side not; Julia apparently planned another brother swap if elaina stayed on the show.

The books are terrible, so poorly written they could have been done by a child. The only likeable characters in the books are Matt and Meredith. Elena is self-centred, shallow, not loyal. Bonnie is pathetic as is Stephen. Damon is the same.

i am a fan of the show and was considering reading the books but after watching this video i just dont want to anymore. i like the way the shows are, reading the books might ruin my image of the series. any suggestion?
reply

I have started reading the books. Yes Elena is not likable at least to start. I have no idea if it gets better. I will say, I think it is just best to think of them as two separate entities that have the same theme.
reply

I wanna read the books because apparently Bonnie and Damon are together I didn't know that at all and elena is blonde in the books and she ends up with stefan but she also has a sister that's gonna be fun to read
reply

Kinda like how Anne Rice's The Queen Of The Damned was nothing like the movie the writers scrapped the whole storyline all together for the movie. The only saving grace for the movie was Aaliyah as Akasha.
reply

bonnie also dated the wolves at the college, and the pack was all friends and helped out. where as tyler and caroline got together in the show they did too in the book but she wasnt the bestie Meredith was.
reply

Cool angels. they should of put that in the show. Caroline was mean /jealous and competive with Elena in show alot. Even thou Elena did not compet with Caroline and was not mean and jealous of Caroline
reply

In the novels. Elena acts mean and selfish, maybe even shallow
Me: Uh she was like that in the show
In the show she was sympathetic and always did things for others
Me: wheezes bish wot

reply

Elena, caroline, stefan and rebekah my favourite charachters of the vampire diaryes it, s actually not fair how the producers changed the scrypt butt it was a great series nina dobrev is the greatest
reply

books get all detailed about the kitsunes, the underworld and the parties they go to in ball gowns etc in the underworld, klaus isnt so involved like the show hes truly just the big bad
reply

The thing with the more creatures at least came in legacies where all kinds of monsters and creatures from legends and myths where brought into the show and the TVD Universe
reply

These differences actually sound really interesting, if all of these differences were added in the show, then it would make the show extra amazing and interesting to watch
reply

I've never read the books so finding out that Jeremy (who was my favorite character) doesn't even exist in the books is hard, but her sister sounds pretty cool.
reply

I absolutely love the books, but I prefer the show just because of Delena and Damons and Stefans relationship since in the books its totally different.
reply

You forgot to mention Jeremy became a hunter so he kind of have a magical significance part just like Elena sister Margaret in the book.
reply

The Celtic tribes had male priests only as in the tradition says the power of the druid can only be passed on to the 1st son or the 7th son
reply

So no one got upset that Elena looks different in the books. I can only imagine the backlash if she was cast as black or a person of colour
reply

they should ve go after the books. the scenarist ruin the vampire diaries completely stefan and elena are end game for me and the books
reply

In the end of Midnight book, Elena ends up with Damon. Only in the original triology she end up With stefan, but that changes after
reply

in the 13th book, after she forgets everything she still ends up with damon, thats wrong to say she ended up with stefan in the books
reply
