They were introduced before the opening credits (on the beach, then RE-introduced right after the credits. a full scene before the scene containing Summer Nights even starts. As a matter of fact, the post-credits scene is their TRUE introduction: you find out exactly who they are. not only by name, but by personality.

I'd add Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games. The introduction we have of her is not that of the awesome archer but the caring sister, which she probably would be what she'd want to be remembered as, and the song she sings to Prim is the same song she sings at the end of the last movie.

John Hughes' movies were so sublime with their character introductions. From Ferris phoning it in for his parents, and then addressing the audience, to The Breakfast Club being dropped off to detention as the opening voiceover letter kicks in, there was ALWAYS a winner!

In Grease there is actually a scene in the beginning about Sandy and Danny's summer romance so Summer Nights isn't the first time they are introduced. It does make the song a lot funnier though.
